"For a world where kaijins can live as kaijins, I will fight for eternity."
―Yukari's oath[src]

Yukari Shinjo (新城 ゆかり, Shinjō Yukari) was one of the main members of Gorgom.

History[]

She had been a high ranking member of the Gorgom minority movement by the time Kotaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki joined in the 1970s. During their time together as activists, Nobuhiko would develop romantic feelings for Yukari.

Following repeated failures of Gorgom regarding the negotiation for Kaijin rights with the government, Yukari proposed a plan to kidnap the grandson of Prime Minister Michinosuke Donami, so that her movement could have some form of leverage. Although Kotaro and Nobuhiko snatched the grandson without a hitch, Michinosuke was still able to pressure Darom into relinquishing the Creation King to the government. Unwilling to follow Darom after such a turn of events, Bilgenia and Yukari formed a splinter faction, taking the Creation King with them to hide in a jungle house.

At some point during her period as a fugitive, Yukari told Kotaro and Nobuhiko her true purpose: Killing the Creation King, in order that no new Kaijins could ever be born, possibly enabling the remaining members of their kind to live out the rest of their days in peace. While Nobuhiko disagreed at first, Yukari maintained that Gorgom could not stay around forever to watch over and protect young Kaijins from ostracism. Convinced by the logic, Kotaro and Nobuhiko entrusted their two halves of the Kingstone to her, at the same time agreeing with her scheme to slay the Kaijin lord. Yukari's ploy, nevertheless, was eavesdropped by Shinichi, and the latter reported the former to the higher - ups. This resulted in her death at the hands of Bilgenia and the imprisonment of Nobuhiko.

Legacy[]

Yukari's ideals ended up defining the lives of her friends Kotaro and Nobuhiko even decades after her death, with the both of them still willing to carry out her desire of putting an end to the Creation King.

Kotaro, seeing that her sentiments for Kaijin equality still lived within Aoi Izumi, managed to strengthen his resolve and was determined to see Yukari's mission to the end. After succeeding in his quest of slaying the Creation King and being forced to become its successor, Kotaro's memories of Yukari enabled him to summon up enough free will to ask Aoi to kill him for good, effectively fulfilling his old friend's wish at last.

According to Shinichi Donami, he claimed Yukari was a government spy sent by Michinosuke to steal back the full Kingstone from Nobuhiko and Kotaro. This pushed Nobuhiko to despair, resulting in his twisted ambition of becoming the new Creation King and subjugate humanity in the name of Kaijins. While Nobuhiko was eventually stopped by Kotaro, it was apparent that the former never really got over the death of Yukari.

Behind the Scenes[]

Portrayal[]

Yukari Shinjo was portrayed by Haruka Imou (芋生 悠, Imou Haruka).

Notes[]

  • It is left intentionally ambiguous what Yukari's true allegiances were. Although Donami claimed that she was spy for the government to regain control of the Creation King, it was unclear whether Dounami told the truth or he lied just to break Nobuhiko's spirit.
