The Memories Are Painful (思い出がヒリヒリ, Omoide ga Hirihiri) is the fifth episode of Kamen Rider Gavv. It features the debut of Gavv Hirihirichips Assist, as well as the appearances of Shoma's granduncle Dente Stomach and his father Bouche Stomach.
Synopsis[]
Shoma collapsed from hunger and was saved by a mysterious monster. Is it a new Granute? Shoma wakes up and transforms into Gavv, but his movement was halted by an unexpected reaction: "The surgery was a success!" Who is this monster?
After receiving a report from the Gochizo, Shoma once again confronts the Agents. He transforms into Gavv and clashes with the two Agents. Hanto, who was watching the scene, is rescued and desperately pleads with those who fear Gavv's appearance, "He's not a monster!" He desperately appeals to the people who are afraid of Gavv's appearance, but...
Plot[]
Continuing from the previous episode, the mysterious shadow has carried Shoma somewhere, revealed to be a Granute. Shoma wakes up and is alarmed, pushing it away and going into a defensive stance demanding to know where he is. The Granute does not seem hostile, as he says Shoma is in his hideout. Shoma quickly transforms which intrigues the large alien monster as he runs towards him only to be judo thrown onto the bed. The Granute is impressed with Shoma’s strength, proclaiming that the “surgery was a success”, asking questions about Shoma’s Gochizo and that “he” should have told him sooner about the good news but then again he was “always a wet blanket”.
Shoma is confused about what the Granute is talking about and when he mentions his father’s name, Bouche, which surprises the Granute as he thought he would remember that he operated on his Gavv when he was little. Shoma asks again who he is and the Granute introduces himself as his father's father's little brother: Dente Stomach. Shoma finds that explanation complicated as Dente laughs jovially.
At Stomach Inc., the twins are sulking over their Agents being defeated, in disbelief that their little brother is strong enough to do that. They remember how weak he used to be especially as a little boy and the failed enhancement surgery their granduncle Dente did to him to make him stronger.
They speculate that maybe the results of the surgery have now just started to show. They expected nothing less from Dente since he is a genius engineer who developed the human spice extraction system they use and Nyelv studied under him to become an engineer himself. Both exclaim that things are getting interesting, only to have Lango overhear their conversation and demand to know what is so interesting.
The twins get really scared as Lango berates them for not improving the quality of the human harvests, in fact he sees absolutely zero change in quality. He entrusted them to handle quality control and so they best start taking responsibility and use their heads or else he will let his Agents take over their operations and the Twins will be fired. The twins find this unfair as they are family, but Lango doesn’t care, he wants to bring Stomach Inc. into a new age where he uses the Dark Snacks that his father developed to rule over Granute society.
At a candy stand outside the factory, a young child Granute happily walks away with his mother after purchasing his first snack. An older Granute in the throes of addiction approaches the Agent running the stand, claiming to have received an invite for a Dark Snack, handing over a large wad of Granute money in exchange and runs to hide in the corner. The old Granute greedily devours it, laughing like a maniac after consuming the Dark Snack.
Lango says that he wants his operation to be swift and covert as he does not want the attention of Granute authorities as he sells the Dark Snacks exclusively on the black market. That is why they quickly need to gain the help of the rich, to gain far more capital and presumably immunity from the law. Lango makes it clear that he will not accept deadweights in his company, family or not.
After getting berated, the Twins bring out their Gavvs and create new Agents from them, ordering them to do both of them proud and collect humans.
Back on Earth, Hanto has been given an assignment to find an underground illegal gambling den by Soji. Soji got an anonymous tip that several famous celebrities frequent the area to gamble, asking Hanto to do a stakeout to eventually expose the operation. Hanto is willing to do the assignment until Sachika calls and says she picked up another sighting online, not of the Kamen Rider, but a monster. Soji understands and lets Hanto investigate and he will stakeout the gambling den, telling him to go on ahead. Hanto knows that the tip wasn’t great on information but he can confirm it by going to the scene himself.
Soji is glad that Hanto is trying to get the facts but tries telling him to do the same for Kenzo Suga as he shouldn’t trust that man’s words and should investigate further to get the full picture.. but is ignored by Hanto who runs out the door to hopefully get a glimpse of the monster.
Meanwhile, Kenzo is in his lab, pulling Chocodan out of its glass jar, cackling as he says he should hurry and get to work before the little Gochizo escapes. He is surrounded by schematics and components to some kind of device that he works on putting together.
Meanwhile, a Granute named Otake has just dropped off two pressed humans to an Agent, getting paid only one Dark Snack after the Agent examines the quality of the humans as being subpar. Otake complains, but the Agent says if he wants a better payout then he should search for higher quality targets. Otake puts on his image inducer to disguise himself as a man in a top hat and sniffs his Dark Snack, wanting to gorge on it but showing restraint, saying he has to savor it so he will eat it later as he starts to go out back to work.
He is stopped by the Agent who was following Hanto, offering Otake another Dark Snack as advance payment for a special job it has in mind for him to carry out. Otake, hooked on the prospect of getting another Snack, happily rushes towards the Agent saying he will do whatever he asks of him.
Back in Dente’s hideout, he learns from his grandnephew that Bouche had passed away. Shoma is distrustful of his granduncle, asking why Dente is in the human world and why he would help him, since he helped make Dark Snacks as well. Dente says that he just had to because of his red Gavv, which leads to Shoma asking why his father ordered Dente to do modifications to his body. Dente says that Shoma’s Gavv lacked the ability to create minions like they could, likely because of his half human biology he inherited from his mother. That comment upsets Shoma, saying it wasn’t his mother’s fault, since they kidnapped her to help make Dark Snacks.
Dente says that he would be surprised if he knew the whole story, as Bouche fell in love at first sight with Michiru when she was with him and Bouche did care about them, in his own way. He recalls years ago when Bouche requested that he use his skills in engineering and technology to give Shoma strength through modifying his body, granting the power to create minions like they can. Bouche just wants his son to live proud and be strong. Dente says in hindsight that request was a tall order, mostly because he never had any experience with working on human anatomy and nothing worked no matter how hard he tried, but the time he spent with Shoma made him appreciate his grandnephew and he grew attached to him. So no matter how many failures he had, he kept on trying for Shoma’s sake.
Dente then decided to research humans to help Shoma eventually, though he admits that once he got to Earth and holed up in his hideout, he got distracted by human food and got addicted to it, resulting in him getting fat. He offers Shoma his favorite snack, a bag of spicy potato chips, but Shoma refuses. Dente insists that he at least takes them with him as they are an “offshoot” of regular potato chips, he continues his conversation, saying he is surprised that human snacks are the trigger to his grandnephew’s powers, making Shoma the culmination of Bouche’s love for his son and Dente’s quality craftsmanship.
Shoma gets even angrier, refusing to believe that his father was a caring man, Michiru despised Bouche as she never asked to be kidnapped or be part of his one-sided love. He always kept the two of them trapped inside his mansion, unable to go outside. Dente said that was for their safety, as Shoma’s older siblings wanted to destroy them and they would be “spiced” if they were too happy. This upsets Shoma even more, finding out that his father made him and his mother feel miserable on purpose and starts to cry, as neither of them asked to be treated like that and both Bouche and Dente made decisions for them without giving either of them a choice. Shoma runs out and away from the hideout in tears despite Dente pleading for him to come back.
Back in the city, Hanto arrives near the location of the monster sightings, only to stumble upon a Poppingummy Gochizo that is trapped in a net covering some trash. He helps the little minion out and recognizes it as one of Kamen Rider’s “little helpers”, Poppingummy breaks free from Hanto’s grip and hops towards the location of an Agent, which Hanto sees upon chasing after the Gochizo. He follows it and carefully opens a window to observe two Agents in a room collecting a large number of pressed humans and polishing them before loading them in briefcases. Poppingummy runs off to tell Shoma leaving Hanto wondering what he should do about this.
Shoma is on a road in the forest and sits on a guardrail, still upset about his father, saying that Dente doesn’t understand how he feels or how his mother suffered. He recalls a painful memory about how when he was younger, he asked his mother about what the world was like outside his father’s home. She said that she didn’t know and asked him politely to go to sleep. As little Shoma tucked himself into bed, he began hearing his mother sobbing in despair, which made him feel sad as well. Shoma cries as he remembers how cruel his father was, as when he was a child, he tried to drag him to Dente’s lab to be modified. Bouche told him that this was for his own good as he will become stronger. Michiru pleads for her husband to stop and unhand Shoma, but Bouche backhands her in the face, knocking her to the floor. She cries as Bouche moves towards her, only for little Shoma to block his path to protect his mother from him. Bouche stops and then leaves the room after seemingly hesitating and feeling frustrated, Michiru hugs her son in tears, promising that someday they will get away from this awful place and go to Earth to experience all the things she talked about in her stories together. Once they do, she promises that they will be happy together..
Shoma in the present manages to stop crying once he hears a little boy named Sei nearby crying about dropping his toy. Sei’s mother tries to lift the drainage grate it fell into but it is too heavy for her, so Shoma offers to help. As he lifts the grate, he remembers what Dente said about how his father wanted to protect him and Michiru from being spiced and realizes that he is protecting the happiness of others in this moment. He lifts the grate and gives Sei his toy, who is very happy and stops crying, thanking him as does his mother. Shoma realizes in that moment that it isn’t wrong to make others happy and he let his siblings words get to him. It is them who are wrong as people should be allowed to be happy no matter what.
His stomach starts growling, as he hasn’t eaten in a while, remembering the chips that his granduncle Dente gave him. He eats one and at first doesn’t like the intense kick of spicy heat, but quickly grows to like them once the actual flavor settles on his tongue. This creates a new variant of potato chip Gochizo, Hirihi Chip, and Shoma finally snaps out of the funk that he had since he left the Nakamuras. He remembers that he has to save people now that he has the power to protect them and even with the pain of the past, he will create new happiness for himself now and for the future to make up for what he lost years ago. The Poppingummy Gochizo finally finds Shoma and alerts him to the current situation.
Back where Hanto is, he sees one of the Agents has closed the briefcases ready to deliver the pressed humans to Jeebh. He worries if he hesitates any longer, the people will be turned into those snacks he heard about from Kenzo. Hanto decides to take a risk and throws a rock at one of the Agents as a diversion and then hides as they look out the window, though Hanto wonders why he is just buying time as he has no means to fight those creatures. He is then spotted and gets knocked out just as he tries to flee, but Hanto is saved by Shoma. The Agents think that this is perfect as they can carry out both directives given to them by the Twins at once. One of them tries to shoot Shoma as he is cranking up his transformation, only for his super speed to move his head out of the way but ends up with his left cheek getting grazed by the bullet. The Agents then try to rush Shoma before his armor can form, but the punch of one of them is blocked as the suit finishes materializing. As the three engage in battle, Hanto wakes up to see Kamen Rider protecting him and at first wants to record him on camera, only to remember the pressed people in the briefcases are still in the room and prioritizes trying to figure out how to save them instead.
Shoma has a difficult time fighting the Agents in Poppingummy form, getting shot multiple times as he shifts to Zakuzakuchips form. Hirihi Chips offers its assistance, augmenting Shoma’s swords with the power of fire, resulting in stronger attacks but the blades have a more limited time of use as they burn away. Once they regenerate, he deflects the enemy fire and does several impressive tricks to do damage. Shoma then goes for the finisher, but an Agent grabs his arm and tries to keep him from moving the crank on his Gavv any further. Shoma counters this by doing a backflip so that the Agent unintentionally turns the crank one final time, unleashing a scissor style flaming Rider Slash that destroys that Agent, while the other one retreats. Poppingummy tells Shoma to get back to the room quickly, where he sees Hanto struggling to untie the bindings of the pressed humans. He tells him that he needs to be careful as if they snap then the humans will die. Hanto listens to Kamen Rider when he instructs him to line the pressed humans up, using his Gavvgablade to free the captive people.
The usual reaction happens where people panic upon seeing what they think is a monster, but Hanto defends him by shouting for the people to calm down and this happens to be Kamen Rider, not a monster. He is the hero that people on the internet have been talking about and he saved all of them from the monsters just now. Hanto's action is successful in calming all of the people, albeit there's looks of questioning here and there, Shoma simply thanked Hanto and runs off.
Later that evening at Hapipare, Hanto pays Sachika her weekly fee for her services in aiding his investigation into monsters and Kamen Rider. As he exits, Shoma hides his face from him in case he saw him transform, but Hanto just gives a casual greeting and walks past him not really noticing him much to Shoma’s relief.
Shoma then enters Hapipare, with Sachika berating him for just disappearing without saying goodbye before. Shoma apologizes for running away, saying he had to think about some things earlier and now he was wondering if she would take him in again as her employee, wanting to truly be someone who makes others happy like her. Sachika agrees to let him stay and gives him one more chance on the condition that he doesn’t run away again without saying goodbye, though she uses wordplay to compare Shoma to a lost puppy to his confusion. She then rephrases it to make it clear that she is going to give Shoma a one time chance, which he thanked her for, as she prepares a room for him to sleep in since it would not be fair for her to just leave Shoma sleeping on the couch. Shoma thinks to himself about his mother, telling her spirit he is finally going to live his own life freely and away from his crazy family, only for his thoughts to be interrupted by Sachika asking him to help with his room by moving stuff out of it.
Elsewhere in the city, Soji had been staking out what he thought was the location of the gambling den at a bar, only to come to the conclusion that the tip was possibly a bust as he had not seen anything remotely suspicious or any celebrities. He thinks it might be because he is getting old as stakeouts were never this hard before. Otake appears in front of him to carry out his assignment, deactivating his disguise and unleashing his tongue from his Gavv to start pressing Soji!
