Supana Kurogane (黒鋼 スパナ, Kurogane Supana)[2][3][4][5] is an alchemist who transforms into the warrior Valvarad (ヴァルバラド, Varubarado). After discovering the fate of his parents, his malice temporarily transformed him into the Wheel Malgam (ウィールマルガム, Wīru Marugamu) until he gained control over his power and became Kamen Rider Valvarad (仮面ライダーヴァルバラド, Kamen Raidā Varubarado).

History
Background
Supana Kurogane was born the son of alchemists Renchi and Suzu Kurogane, both whom were combat specialists of the Alchemys Union. Ten years ago predating the series, Supana's parents were killed in front of him by Glion. As a terrified Supana hid, he was found by Kyoka Edami and taken in, who would ultimately wipe his memories of this incident.
Kyoka became Supana's adoptive mother and raised him in her specialty, mechanical engineering. Supana eventually graduated from the Alchemist Academy and was promoted to A-Class rank after defeating rival alchemist Boruto Namarizaki in battle. Using his skills and knowledge accumulated from his training with Kyoka, Supana created Valvarad and used it to undergo missions assigned by the Union. Eventually, he was dispatched back to the Academy to help recover the Chemies that had gone missing after Fuga Kudo released them.

Gigist's Advent & Legend's Return
Rise of more Dark Kings
The Future Daybreak
The Silver Steel Rider
After the existence of the Chemies and alchemy are exposed to the public by Gaelijah, it causes evil individuals like Golem Gouriki and the Yakuza to want them for their own malicious agendas, prompting Supana Kurogane to temporarily part ways with Houtaro and his group and announcing to the world while demanding that Houtaro gives him all the Chemies. The next day, Supana and the Alchemys Union use alchemy to entrap Houtaro and steal all his Chemies. After Houtaro talks with Koichiro Asahi and learns about his suicidal plan to dangerously merge with all the 101 Chemies then take down the Dark Kings, Houtaro arrive at the place where Supana is attempting his ritual and sucker-punches him then questions the former why he's always been like this, saying that he doesn't mind sacrificing himself for his friends to live since his parents did the same thing for him, leading to a battle between the two alchemists which ends with the destruction of the Valvaradriver. Supana left to Fuga Kudo's hideout after the battle.
Gigist started hunting her and Supana down. Supana, not being able to transform into a Kamen Rider anymore, had to protect her using his former Valvarad form. After Supana's evolution into Kamen Rider Valvarad Kurogane and Gigist's defeat, she is seen catching Eldoragon, a dark Nijigon based chemy made by Glion, who tried to snatch the Philosopher's Stone fragment left behind by Gigist.
As Lachesis was celebrating her catch, she was shot from behind by Glion, retrieving the final fragment. Through tears, she reveals that what she wished to know more about once becoming fully human was "love", implicitly confessing her feelings to Supana. She then passed in his arms after imagining a scenario about her date with Supana as a human, leaving Glion satisfied, the Alchemists dispirited and Clotho heartbroken for losing the last of her siblings. Contrary to Atropos, her body did not disappear after her death, implying that she became fully human, as stated by a grieving Supana.
Personality
Supana is a cool, aloof and pessimistic elite who believes that Chemies are nothing more than tools created by human beings and unlike other students of Alchemist Academy, has no interest in collecting them. He strongly believes in the virtue of humankind and will not hesitate to attack those without it but is also not above going against that virtue if he thinks it necessary. He does possess his own set of virtues as well, as seen when he has utmost respect towards his mentor Kyoka Edami as she saved him a long time ago.
Due to his duties and goal of uncovering Fuga Kudo's whereabouts, he acts nice towards Rinne. He also exhibits a tsundere attitude towards Houtaro and ignores him often. Though he does warm up to him once he starts gradually recognizing Houtaro's talents.
A more comedic side of Supana is that he has a certain fixation for color purple, so much that when he makes omurice, the omurice color is purple as well.
After learning of what had happened 10 years prior, he remembered all the feelings that were taken, and using that malice, began to act out in rage, at Glion for killing his parents, and at his mentor for keeping it from him. He also discarded his own name when inquired by Houtaro and Rinne, claiming that Supana Kurogane did not exist in the first place.
Fortunately, once he saw the extent of his repressed memories, and knowing that both his parents and Kyoka truly believed in him, Supana's conviction was renewed, and he gained a new confidence as a result. He also changed his view about Chemies in general, from viewing them as a mere tool, into seeing them as their own being. However, unlike Houtaro who wants to befriend the Chemy, Supana only allows the Chemy to follow him if their will resonates with his own.
Powers and Abilities
Powers
- Alchemy: True to his status as an A-Rank Alchemist, Supana can perform a wider variety of alchemy, such as repellent techniques. He can also perform many of them without looking at his enemies.
- Black Flame Manipulation: Supana is able to emit and manipulate black flames from his body, as well as transmuting them into anything such as spikes. Later revealed by the Dark King Gigist, the black flame is actually a power that Supana inherited from him. Supana would later use the black flames to his advantage, summoning a temporary copy of the Valvarusher to dual-wield, transforming into Angecopter and Orochishovel Customs without having to inserted the needed Chemy Cards, and even attempting to dangerously transmute himself with all 101 Chemies.[Big Clash! Houtaro vs. Supana]
- Silver Flame Manipulation: After Supana reflects on his past experiences of his allies and gradually accepting Houtaro's dream, he finally gains control over the black flames, converting them into a silver color. With the silver flames, he is able to transmute an in-development driver into the Valvaradriver Kurogane, gaining greater strength than Gigist in the progress.
Abilities
- Talented Cook: Supana is a skilled cook, as his food tastes better than Houtaro’s cooking, much to the latter’s dismay.
- Expert Swordsman: Supana is an incredibly skilled swordsman and is later shown to be able to dual-wield two Valvarusher in seperate occasions.
- Skilled Combatant: Supana was able to fight on par against Rainbow Gotchard in all of his Rider Valvarad forms, and even force him back to Gotchard Steamhopper in his Orochishovel Custom by making use of the form's extendable claws.

- Valmetal Crusher (ヴァルメタルクラッシャー, Varumetaru Kurasshā): The mouthguard. By returning the alchemical silver flame "Silver Ray Blowstar" to the transformer's body as he breathes, the circulation of silver flame is formed by the transformer and the equipment of each part of the Kamen Rider Valvarad Kurogane. This helps reduce lag and increase the reaction speed of each part.
- Silver Ray Blowstar (シルバレイブロウスター, Shirubarei Burousutā): The silver flames. It is an evolution of the black flames that originated from the Dark King Gigist, and boasts an extremely high energy density, which flows throughout the body like an aura, exerting immense power. It is operated in the internal circulatory system because stabilizing this silver flame requires advanced alchemy.
- Mythril Valvaradoll (ミスリルヴァルバラドール, Misuriru Varubaradōru): The alchemy body. Kamen Rider Valvarad Kurogane was created with highly refined mechanical elements through silver flame evolutionary multiple transmutation consisting of the transformer, the Metal Chemy "Metal Machwheel", and the Metal Chemy "Metal Daiohni".
- Progress Bleed Core (プログレスブリードコア, Puroguresu Burīdo Koa): The internal combustion alchemy engine. It explosively amplifies the transformer's transmutation silver flame, "Silver Ray Blowstar," by burning it with various alchemical materials including air and water, and supplying it to the entire body.

- Heavy Ogre Traction (ヘビーオーガトラクション, Hebī Ōga Torakushon): The legs. The silver flames allow it to be operated in high top gear at all times, and precise traction control improves precision. The attacks that are unleashed by this method are as destructive as those of a fierce god.
This form has the following finishers:
- Over Valvara Burst (オーバーヴァルヴァラバースト, Ōbā Varubara Bāsuto): Valvarad Kurogane thrusts the two Valvarushers into the ground, then activates the finisher in the Valvaradriver Kurogane. He then kicks the Valvarushers up into the air with his left leg, before delivering another kick with his right leg to send the weapons flying with flames, the left one with purple flames and the other with silver flames. After the Valvarushers are stabbed into the enemy, Valvarad Kurogane then run towards the enemy to deal a final flying kick with purple and silver flames, kicking the weapons with both feet and knocking the enemy away. The enemy then explodes, with the Valvarushers flying back towards Valvarad Kurogane.

Family
- Renchi Kurogane: Supana's father
- Suzu Kurogane: Supana's mother
- Kyoka Edami: Supana's guardian (both mentor and mother figure) who took him in after he was left alone 10 years ago and raised him into a proficient alchemist. Because of this, he feels a deep sense of gratitude to her. She also gave Supana the order to monitor Rinne Kudo, explaining his earlier attitude. Unfortunately, the two had a brief fallout when Supana's bad memories of his parents and Glion resurfaced, along with the darkness causing him to turn into a Malgam with Madwheel. Even then, Kyoka still continued to believe in Supana and his innate abilities. Once knowing Kyoka's conviction, Supana reconciles with her. But after she was a little hurt after attacks by "uncontrolled civilians", Supana went and walked away from her to "kill the chemys", before leaving, he said thank you to her before leaving, leaving her and going on his way. After his defeat against Houtaro, Supana finally returns back to Kyoka.

Supana is also a better cook than Houtaro, much to the latter dismay. Thus, Houtaro swears to surpass Supana both as an Alchemist and a cook. After Supana took the chemies to enact his suicidal plan, Houtaro wanted to fight him to see what Supana really wants and after defeating him, Supana walks away, After the fight, Supana acknowledges Houtaro's growth and considering him as one of the many lights he had in his life, the others being his late parents and Kyoka.

Behind the Scenes
Portrayal
- Supana Kurogane is portrayed by Yasunari Fujibayashi (藤林 泰也, Fujibayashi Yasunari). As a teenager, he is portrayed by Yumeto Takahashi (高橋 夢人, Takahashi Yumeto).
- As Valvarad, he was suit-acted by Yasuhiko Imai (今井 靖彦, Imai Yasuhiko) until Episode 7 due to Imai's return to Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger. As of Episode 8 going forward, his suit-actor for Valvarad, the Wheel Malgam, and Kamen Rider Valvarad has been Yuji Nakata (中田 裕士, Nakata Yūji).
Etymology
- "Valvarad" comes from the Japanese onomatopoeia "barabara" (バラバラ ), which describes something scattered in pieces.[16]
- Supana (スパナ )'s first name is derived from the English word "spanner", which is also used in Japanese as a loanword, which equals to the term "wrench" in North American English.
- Kurogane (黒鋼 ) roughly means "black steel", and can mean "iron" (鉄 / 黒金, Kurogane). As a member of the Alchemys Union, Supana's name contains a kanji for a metal element. That name, with his first, fits Valvarad's scrap motif.
- The syllables of "Kuro" (くろ ) can be switched around to make "Roku" (ろく ) meaning six, the level of Madwheel/Machwheel and Daiohni.
Notes
- During early development, it was decided that Supana would act as an "older brother" type character to Houtaro in order to stand out as a strong character on his own.[17]
- Orochishovel Custom's gauntlets are retooled from Gotchard Dokkirishovel by adding three dragon heads to each. Dokkirishovel's gauntlets were themselves heavily retooled from Kamen Rider Revi Kong Genome's gauntlets.
- Angelcopter Custom's left forearm reuses the front half of the helicopter from Gekiocopter Custom but repainted and with a new rotor.
- The Wheel Malgam's chest armor and left shoulder pad are reused from Valvarad, while the right golden hand holds Valvarad's Wrench Face, and the additional right hand wields Valvarad's right shoulder pad as a hammer.
- The Wheel Malgam is the first gold body Malgam to be created from a human. It is formed like the normal kind, but enhanced by Supana's black flames and Glion's alchemy.
- Valvarad's original eyes can be seen under the conventional compound eyes of his Kamen Rider form.
- The two versions of Valvarad are differentiated by the names Unmarked Valvarad (無印ヴァルバラド, Mujirushi Varubarad) and Rider Valvarad (ライダーヴァルバラド, Raidā Varubarado).[18][19]
- Valvarad Kurogane reuses the undersuit from Cross-Z Charge, while repainting the chestpiece from the Rider Armors, Zi-O II's shoulderpads, Ghost Toucon Boost Damashii's forearms, Kamen Rider GeizRevive's leg armor, and the Ex-Aid Riders' bangles.
