This is a STYLE GUIDE page- part of a series of supplements to assist you in your editing of the wiki. The STYLE GUIDE is currently in construction. Please be patient. |
Image Guidelines |
Below is a guide to certain areas of the wiki that require images.
Uploading
Please ensure that if you upload an image while editing a page, that you add the appropriate attribution template. Click on more options, then choose an option from the Licensing list that appears. When you select a licensing template, a preview of it will appear. This template will appear on the file information page.
If you upload an image via Special:Upload (the Add a Photo link in the Contribute menu), then the same rule applies. The Licensing list is on the same page as the upload button. If you're using Monobook, this is the only image upload form available.
If you feel that the required option isn't on the list, please let an administrator know.
Infobox Pictures
For character infoboxes, use landscape oriented photos or those that would fit in a landscape frame. Screenshots are typically landscape. Exceptions from the landscape guidelines are Zords/Mecha, Megazords/Giant Robos and Monsters. In addition, pleases use a photo that reflects the character in his most relevant (TV) appearance. Always use their most (TV) relevant appearance first if using a tabber in the infobox.
As for the size, it is preferable that the head of the subject make up 1/3 of the photo.
If the photo is not landscape the infoboxes, especially those of riders will crop it for you. Check to see that it looks good on the photo. The photo will keep the top portion and trim the lower part if it is portrait-oriented.
Quality
As information new arrives for each season, different qualities of images can be found. Please note the priority of what quality we can use.
GIF Files
The following guidelines must be followed when uploading .gif files to the wiki:
- Animated GIFs must be converted from clips of the original episodes, with decent quality and acceptable frame rate.
- Ensure that the frames in the GIF do not contain any fansubs and/or other watermarks e.g. watermarks from a YouTube video.
- Image size should be optimized to reduce page load times. The image may be shrunk down if necessary.
Infobox Landscape Exemptions
Rider Costumes
These are seen in Kamen Rider categories and individual Kamen Rider pages. The important thing is that the suit design is clearly seen. Quality priority applies.
If you are removing a background from an existing Rider suit image via image-editing software, please ensure that the image edges are properly cleaned and that the image quality is retained.
Monster Form Photos
These are seen in infoboxes, and are exempt from the landscape rule. The important thing is that the suit design is clearly seen. Quality priority applies.
Other Rules
Photos from English-language websites (accessible by general audience) that contain layout detail are not allowed on the Wiki as they form the site identity of other websites. Exceptions are photos found in downloads sections, such as wallpaper, skins, and official production photos. Non-English site photos are allowed with copyright. Never use an image with a watermark. Plain white backgrounds should also be avoided. Here are just some examples:
When choosing a photo for actor or actress' article, try to, by default, use a photo provided by their agency. Avoid photos from magazine shoots, such as bikini, gravure, and nude whenever possible, as they are considered inappropriate in most professional settings. We also do not host photo galleries of individual actors or actresses, so don't make one unless it stipulates changes in their agencies.
There has been instances where for comic-relief, characters have appeared partially naked or in underpants (like Zero-One episode 37) or have casually appeared in swimsuits (like Fourze episode 3). None of these scenes were meant to be inappropriate. Hence, screenshots of these scenes are allowed as long as they are contextual. However, cropping the images and laying focus on those characters is not allowed for the reasons mentioned in the previous section.
Some adult-oriented products of the franchise have shown explicit nudity and bloodshed. For nudity, none of those images are allowed under any circumstances. For violence, images will be allowed as long as they are not uncomfortable for other users.
Fair Use
Use only the images which have been made available by publishers on public domain, such as social media sites. Such images come under Fair Use laws. Images from official websites should be used only when they are clearly made available for distribution. While uploading such images, file descriptions should contain acknowledgement of the source (such as {{CopyrightToei}}) in the file description. Images unavailable for distribution should not be derived from the website even through source code as doing so may violate copyright.
Fair Use may not include any images in public domain that the publisher does not wish to be shared through certain means. Magazine scans from Televi-Kun are prohibited from being directly uploaded to the Wiki as the publication announced in July 2020 that they are tracking down their scans online that could result in criminal charges and possibly having us shut down. This includes entire pages, screenshots from parts of a page (i.e. using a portion of a page that includes a new form), and crops from the original image.[1] However, photoshopped renders are allowed as long as it is not made obvious that it was sourced from the magazine. Images from other magazines are allowed, but they must be properly sourced before being added to any page.
