- For the counterpart in the magic stone, see Shunpei Nara (World within the Magic Stone).
Shunpei Nara (奈良 瞬平, Nara Shunpei) is the lead supporting protagonist in Kamen Rider Wizard, acting as Haruto Soma's apprentice. He is a young man who wishes to find a great master so he could be a magician. Even though he wants to, he usually cannot help other people.
History[]
Shunpei first met Haruto as Wizard when the Hellhound attacked him and a group of children. Afterwards, Shunpei tried to get Haruto to make him Haruto's apprentice; but he is turned down. The Hellhound took advantage of the situation by putting up the illusion that Shunpei could summon a torrent of fire. Hellhound then reveals the ruse on public television and forces Shunpei to burn his childhood book "The Forest Wizard", causing him to go into despair. Wizard then appears and destroys Hellhound before going into Shunpei's mind to destroy his Inner Phantom, Cyclops. Even though Shunpei no longer has the potential to use magic, he makes himself Haruto's assistant.
After Haruto receives the Hurricane Dragon Wizard Ring from Wajima, inspired by this, Shunpei follows Haruto out to look for Phantoms, hoping to "upgrade himself" as Haruto's assistant. However, Shunpei mistakes several different mishaps to be the work of Phantoms, causing Haruto to follow after him and apologize to civilians for causing a scene. After this, Haruto tells Shunpei to head back to the Antique Shop for the day, worried that all of Shunpei's running around is going to tip off the Phantoms.
Shunpei laments on his uselessness, walking past a local sweet shop, he runs into an old friend from high school, Tetsuya Inagaki, who is an apprentice to wagashi specialist, Shozo Matsuki. On his way to deliver wagashi to an important buyer, while Shunpei stays behind with Shozo, Tetsuya is attacked by the Valkyrie Phantom, but saved by Haruto, accidentally destroying the manju and severing trust and ties with their buyer despite trying to explain his situation.
Shunpei tries to explain the situation to Shozo, who doesn't listen, deciding to move on from their faliure. Tetsuya admits that without the sales from their buyer, the sweet shop is in danger of closing, not making enough money. Shunpei tries to ease the situation and tell Tetsuya there's still hope.
Struck with inspiration, Shunpei decides to help advertise the manju, selling it to his friends and anybody he comes across, bordering on too much. Despite all of his hard work, they don't quite sell enough. Until a potential buyer under the name of Katsuya Kiritani takes interest. Tetsuya and Shozo work hard, creating a new flavor of wagashi called "Hope". However, they are tricked by Katsuya, who turns out to be the Valkyrie Phantom, revealing Shozo as the true gate instead of Tetsuya, Valkyrie takes Shunpei as a hostage who is quickly saved by Haruto.
Gathered back at the Antique Shop, Shozo tells the group that he's going to sell his shop.
Rinko and Shunpei have a heart to heart. Shunpei believes he's holding Haruto back, he's not quite sure what to say to the Wizard, and he's not sure how to help Shozo and Tetsuya, both issues upsetting him. Rinko lets Shunpei know that everyone has bad days, and not to let the opinions of others bug him. Shunpei tells Rinko that it seems Haruto doesn't care whether he's there or not, calling himself a "useless assistant." Rinko tells Shunpei to find his own way to become useful, telling him that Haruto seems stressed, and that she'll always do her best to support him, no matter what that looks like.
This inspires Shunpei to return to the sweets shop and tell Tetsuya to not give up, even going as far to return to their first buyer and beg for forgiveness on the sweet shop's behalf. Inspiring Tetsuya to recreate the "Hope" wagashi himself, which he's going to give to another shop, hoping to keep Shozo's hope alive, and become his mentor's successor.
However, Valkyrie attacks once again, but Haruto is quick to fight back with his Hurricane Wizard Ring. Taking the fight across town, "Hope" is almost lost when the last remaining one almost drops into a fountain, but Shunpei quickly dives for it, saving the final wagashi. Wizard in Hurricane Dragon form defeats Valkyrie Phantom.
Shozo still closes the shop, hopeful in Tetsuya as his future, and Shunpei apologizes for not being able to help, very quickly proved wrong by all of his friends, who tell him that he was a huge help, Haruto tells Shunpei that he'll be counting on him now as his assistant, accepting Shunpei as his apprentice, which makes Shunpei happy.
After Haruto's final battle with Gremlin, Shunpei has become Wajima's apprentice and was seen crafting a Wizard Ring out of a Magic Stone. In Sengoku Movie War, this Wizard Ring turns out the Chi Chi Pui Pui Ring, which initially didn't do anything, managed to summon Haruto's consciousness in Rider form after the meager magic in the Ring was boosted by the Hope Ring.

Personality[]
He has a cheerful and helpful personality, but his clumsiness usually ends up with him stirring up trouble or making problems worse instead. Shunpei has been fascinated with magic since childhood after reading a book called The Forest Wizard, quoting the phrase "Chi Chi Pui Pui" from the book in various circumstances, and hoping that he could one day be a mage himself, which is usually ridiculed by those around him for it.
His fascination with magic doesn't end with his lost of magical potential and thus unable to use magic ever. Instead, he continues to be fascinated with magic and vows to be a good assistant to Haruto. As a result, he is usually the one urging Haruto to try out any new rings. His social awkwardness and ineptitude for most part causes him to be treated initially as a mere annoyance to Haruto, but after proving that his earnestness can indeed get things done (even though he might not even be aware of it), Haruto begins to treat him better and would sometimes assign him tasks and has him hang around when going out, even just so that Haruto has a convenient errand boy around when he needs one.
