This article is about a Rider in Kamen Rider Geats. |
Sara Sakurai (桜井 沙羅, Sakurai Sara) is the older sister of Keiwa Sakurai. After Keiwa's temporary disappearance, she participated in the Desire Royale as Kamen Rider Hakubi (仮面ライダーハクビ, Kamen Raidā Hakubi).
She would later be turned into a Pawn Jyamato (ポーンジャマト, Pōn Jamato) by Daichi Isuzu before eventually being killed twice by Michinaga Azuma and Kirito Asari, and revived through Daichi and Keiwa.
History
Background
Sara Sakurai was born on March 6, 1998[1], as the first child of her parents Shigeru and Yukino Sakurai, and had a younger brother Keiwa Sakurai. When Sara was in high school, she witnessed her parents become casualties of a previous Desire Grand Prix competition. However her memories of the incident were erased, and she continued on with her life believing that they had died in an accident instead. Since then, Sara began living with Keiwa, and continue to do so well into adulthood.
At some point, Sara began watching NeonTV and became a fan of Neon Kurama.
Daybreak/Encounter Arc
One day, Sara invited Keiwa out for lunch after he failed his job interview. Just before they started eating, the Desire Grand Prix mission started and the siblings were seperated between the Jyamar Area. After seeing the Wasou Jyamato kill the restaurant manager, they attempt to attack Sara next, but is blocked by the force field. It turns its attention to Keiwa and she is forced to see her brother run. Fortunately, Ace Ukiyo was able to clear the final round and reset reality back to how it was before, losing her memories in the process.
Unbeknownst to Sara, Keiwa was invited for the next edition of the DGP. In the new world, Ace's wish to become famous celebirty has made Sara becomes a fan of both Ace and Neon simultaneously. When the city under attack by the Saboten Knight Jyamato, Sara discovered Keiwa's secret life as a Kamen Rider and regained her lost memories after touching Tycoon's ID Core. She revealed the truth to Keiwa regarding their parents' death, before being captured as a sacrifice for the final boss. Fortunately, Keiwa would access Ninja Form in order to rescue Sara and even accepted his elimination knowing that his sister is safe and alive.
Conspiracy Arc
With her memory and Keiwa's memory about DGP getting erased again, Sara feel strange of his changes of behaviors, including using the money to buy lottery and prefer sushi instead of tanuki soba. But no longer care about this when Keiwa regains his memories since Sara feels fine as long as Keiwa return as himself.
Divergence Arc
Lamentation Arc
Sara was invited to help in a takoyaki stall with Keiwa the festival when Jyamatos were aiming to destroy the festival during the first round in the Jyamato Grand Prix. Later, in the Heaven and Hell game, Sara and Keiwa was being involved due to their living place surrounded by Jyamar Area, forcing them to leave their house and participate in the game. While Sara tries to save people in the game, she still gets horrified when she saw a female student she saved drags a man to the pitfall just to save herself and Keiwa's elimination due to Michinaga. In the last round of the game, all civilians were fall to dispersed into bubbles due to standing on bright colours circles while only Sara and a kid survived due to standing on a black one.
Yearning Arc
Frustrating to find Keiwa after her memories altered again, Kekera finds Sara in his frog statue form, promising her to have Keiwa return while in exchange, Sara becomes Kamen Rider Hakubi and participate in Desire Royale in Keiwa's place, while not noticing the true nature of the frog who let Keiwa's memories return and participation in Desire Royale when she lose consciousness in her first fight. In the game, Sara meets Neon and make deeper friendships with her, while knowing more about the game and start fighting together as comrades in the game. Despite Keiwa's existance in the game being realized by others, other players did not tell Sara about this due to their own reasons.
Keiwa is eventually forced to reveal that Kekera convinced him to join the game to protect Sara, but by then she has decided to also fight for Neon's dream. The three of them manage to tie with Michinaga for first place (under Sara's name) in the quest for the most ID cores, resulting in "overtime" - one hour for either side to try and gain the lead. During this overtime, Buffa ambushes all three Riders and nearly hits Sara/Hakubi at point-blank range, but Neon/Nago absorbs the attack instead. Both girls are forced out of transformation, at which point Buffa destroys their ID Cores in one fist, eliminating them both.
Genesis Arc
Ace restores Sara's memories of the DGP as he recreates the world, but finds that he does not have enough energy to recreate the Hakubi ID Core. Sara and Neon rekindle their friendship and decide to shop for a place for Neon to live away from her family, with Sara offering to help her set up the furniture and decoration for her new house.
When Keiwa and Michinaga decide to join Ace in a reward-free DGP to eliminate the surviving Jyamato, Sara decides to help by getting a new job so Keiwa doesn't have to worry about getting one himself until the fight's over. When the Jyamato attack during one interview, Daichi uses the opportunity to infect Sara with the Jyamato, causing her to evolve into one. Michinaga battles her and succeeds in defeating her, unaware that it was Sara until the final blow was struck. Keiwa, having learned from Daichi about the plan, arrives just in time to watch Sara get dragged underground to be trapped in "Tree of Knowledge" in the Jyamato Garden.
Daichi's goal succeed and he ate a tomato-like fruit growing from the tree that Sara was trapped inside, causing him to gain Sara's memories.
She would later be revived due to Keiwa Sakurai's wish. However, she and her family were immediately killed by Kirito Asari and the Gang Riders, along with many other civilians.
After Ace became the God of Genesis, he would restored the previous world before Keiwa's wish, causing Sara to be jailed in the Tree of Knowledge again. Daichi later comes but was followed by Beroba, Kekera and another version of Tsumuri. Beroba later used the Tree for her devious plan. However, she was stopped by Michinaga, who also defeated and killed her. After Beroba's death, Michinaga, Neon, Keiwa and Daichi came back to the tree and used a potion made by Daichi to release Sara out of the tree, reuniting with her brother.
When Michinaga later meets the siblings and apologized for the incident, Sara gladly forgives him after knowing his efforts to save her on beforehand, but later fall into amazement when she saw Michinaga becomes a buffalo figure by Kekera's wish, before Kekera proceeds to kill her in order to have Keiwa to become the Kamen Rider he want, Daichi appears to protect her, causing him to be teleported away along with Keiwa by Kekera after being defeated by the latter.
When Suel started the final Desire Grand Prix, Sara has appeared to help Neon and Keiwa to evacuate civilans. After Ace recreates the world, Sara returns to her daily life as a salaryman.
Personality
Despite being Keiwa's older sister, Sara acts more like a younger sister, often whining about many situations. She also can be airheaded and ditzy in various occassions, particularly if it involves her celebrity crushes Neon and Ace. However, she deeply cares for her younger brother, even becoming a Kamen Rider in his place for the Desire Royale. She also shares his sense of justice that she strives to help and protect others as well, shown during the Heaven and Hell game of the Jyamato Grand Prix and the Parasite game of which the latter led to her demise.

Behind the Scenes
Portrayal
Sara Sakurai is portrayed by Nene Shida (志田 音々, Shida Nene), who previously portrayed Ran Shiomi in Girl Gun Lady. As Kamen Rider Hakubi, her suit actress is Mutsumi Igarashi (五十嵐 睦美, Igarashi Mutsumi), who was previously the suit actress for Kamen Rider Letter in the same series.
Etymology
Hakubi's name originates from the Japanese name for the masked palm civet (ハクビシン, Hakubishin).
Notes
- Sara was born on the same year as her actress, however, their birthdays are three months apart.
- Sara's transformation pose is based on Tycoon's and Na-Go's transformation poses, albeit reversed.
- Kamen Rider Hakubi's helmet is a heavily retooled version of Mary and Letter's helmet design. This makes her the first Rider in Geats whose animal motif is not from the same biological family as those of the Riders her helmet is retooled from.
- Hakubi's animal motif is presumably a reference to the mujina, a Japanese yōkai that is similar to (and often mistaken for) the tanuki, her brother Keiwa's motif. Furthering the connection, the word mujina can also be used to refer to the masked palm civet.
- Hakubi is currently the only Geats Rider who has a personal accessory but lacks a known compatible large Raise Buckle.
- Yuya Takahashi originally intended for Sara's death that leads to Keiwa's turn to darkness to happen earlier. However, Naomi Takebe kept asking him to delay it, which pushed the development till episode 40.[4]
