Renn Kiriyama (桐山 漣 Kiriyama Ren) is a Japanese actor who is best known for his role as Shotaro Hidari, the male lead and half of the eponymous hero of the television series Kamen Rider W, alongside Masaki Suda as Philip.

Renn made an appearance at the first ever Japan World HeroesIcon-crosswiki.png convention in Pasadena, CA, USA on August 26-29 in 2017. This made him the first ever Heisei Rider to attend an American Tokusatsu convention.

Biography

As a teenager, Kirayama had aspired to be a musician as he played bass in a band. However at the age of 21, he decided to pursue acting instead. He began to attend actor training school while working three different part-time jobs to pay for lessons.

He landed his first role in 2006 in the Prince of Tennis musicals.

After Kamen Rider W, Kiriyama landed the lead role of Shinichi Moriyama in the drama Code M: Codename Mirage. His character is left-handed, a reference to his previous role as Shotaro, who was the left-hand side of Double.

Personal Life

  • When Kirayama was a child, he enjoyed watching Kamen Rider Black, which he attributed as his favorite series and wanted to become one. When he was cast as Shotaro, who would later become the sole Kamen Rider Joker, Kirayama was overjoyed as Joker was entirely black, incorporating an element of his favorite rider. [1] This would later inspire the fight between Joker, Black, and Black RX in Kamen Rider Taisen.
  • Kiriyama had previously auditioned for Kamen Rider Kabuto, Kamen Rider Den-O, Kamen Rider Kiva, and Kamen Rider Decade, before failing them. When he was ultimately cast as Shotaro, he cried tears of joy.
  • Kiriyama's favorite form of Double is Trigger.
  • Kiriyama has a miniature dachshund dog named Peach.
  • In a bonus feature for Kamen Rider W Forever: A to Z/The Gaia Memories of Fate, Kiriyama had expressed an interest in a Joker installment of Kamen Rider W Returns.
