Prometh (プロメス, Puromesu)[1] is a mysterious character that embodies "light", being the one whom bestowed the Power of Agito to humanity.
Appearance[]
In both child form and adult form, Prometh greatly resembles the Overlord, with white colors to represent his empathic nature.
History[]
Prometh was among the first beings in existence, born before the creation of mankind. Sometime later, he witnessed the Lords' actions on Earth, namely their slaughter of several innocents. To remedy the situation, Prometh bestowed upon a warrior known as "Gills" to a mortal woman, giving humanity the means to fight back.
In doing this though, Prometh incurred the wrath of the Overlord, ultimately causing the two to battle. Facing imminent defeat, Prometh used his remaining life-force to transcend time and space, bestowing his powers upon several other humans. Successful, Prometh vanished from the mortal realm, but not before telling the Overlord that humanity will one day evolve beyond his rule.
Legacy[]
In present times, Prometh's chosen hosts began to change as intended, giving them supernatural powers. Unfortunately, many misunderstood the situation and committed suicide, not wishing to live as a "freak". Worse, the Lords sensed these changes and began enacting the Overlord's commands, slaughtering any humans that were seemingly associated with Prometh.
However, amidst such tragedies, one individual named "Shoichi Tsugami" used his gifts by Prometh to fight the Lords, becoming Kamen Rider Agito in the process. Ultimately, this allowed Prometh's wishes to be fulfilled, as humanity would prevail in the end.
Personality[]
Prometh is shown to be a benevolent and honorable entity, capable of standing up against Theos himself. Notably, despite his origins as a deity, Prometh treated mortal lives in a loving and respectful manner, serving as the key for their survival.
Powers[]
Befitting his origins as a deity, Prometh is one of the most powerful characters in the Kamen Rider franchise, able to affect reality on a tremendous scale. Most impressively, he could manipulate the space-time continuum in an instant, doing so while mortally wounded. Evidently, even the Overlord failed to stop this action, thus allowing Prometh to convert several humans into Agito and Gills.
Behind the scenes[]
Portrayal[]
Prometh is portrayed by Rei Haneo (羽緒 レイ, Haneo Rei), who also portrays the Overlord. His child self is portrayed by Ryunosuke Kamiki (神木 隆之介, Kamiki Ryūnosuke).
Notes[]
- Prometh's role appears to be influenced by Lucifer, the titular fallen angel who turned his back on God, and in some interpretations, is depicted as the Devil. Notably, Lucifer's name is also translated as "light-bringer". Unlike the Devil, however, Prometh is purely good, while his older brother, Theos, ultimately took this role as the "Power of Darkness" himself.
- Prometh's name appears to be derived from Prometheus, a figure from Greek Mythology who taught humanity how to use fire and knowledge from the gods. Similarly, Prometh and Prometheus were punished for their noble actions.
- Due to the varied nature of Prometh's origins, fans often misinterpret him as the El of the Fire (火のエル, Hi no Eru) or the Overlord of Light.
- In certain sources such as Kamen Rider Mook, Prometh is explicitly written to be an El Lord, whereas other official material refer to Prometh as another divine entity like the Overlord.[2].
- Notably, in the TV series itself, Tetsuya Sawaki refers to Prometh as "the exact same as the Overlord, but also his exact opposite", lending credence to the latter.
