Orteca (オルテカ, Oruteka),[1] born Makoto Hatsushiba (初芝 真, Hatsushiba Makoto), is an executive of the Deadmans who transformed into the Daiouika Deadman (ダイオウイカ・デッドマン, Daiōika Deddoman), the second Kamen Rider Demons (仮面ライダーデモンズ, Kamen Raidā Demonzu), Anomalocaris Deadman (アノマロカリス・デッドマン, Anomarokarisu Deddoman), and Kamen Rider Orteca (仮面ライダーオルテカ, Kamen Raidā Oruteka).
History[]
Background[]
Makoto Hatsushiba was once a child prodigy whose intelligence led to him feeling isolated, and was abused by his father after he proved himself smarter than him. In his darkest hour, he was approached by Hideo Akaishi who offered him the power to change humanity's future. After witnessing Giff for the first time, Makoto became ecstatic at the sight of his true goal, to evolve humanity and transcend it past its foolishness.
To join the Deadmans, Makoto abandoned his own identity and morals, and became known from that day forth as Orteca. At some point after joining the cult, Orteca awakened his own inner demon and became a Gifftex. During the Deadmans' raid at the Fenix Genome Laboratory, Orteca as the Daiouika Deadman was present that night and seized the majority of Vistamps.
The Deadmans Crisis[]
Orteca, along with Aguilera and Julio, were first seen leading the Deadmans' rally by using the Vistamps to summon Giff Juniors from their cult followers who cheered for them. Orteca participated in the attack on the Fenix ceremony with their army of Giff Juniors. The Deadmans march forward to declare their intentions to create hell on Earth, before the executives made their leave. In the end, Ikki Igarashi managed to contract with his demon, Vice, in order to become Kamen Riders Revi and Vice to combat them.
Orteca became involved handing out Vistamps to potential new followers, seeking to create more Deadmen to sacrifice in order to resurrect their leader Giff. As a criterion for sacrifice candidates, he often targets those who are dissatisfied with their lives or possess darkness at the bottom of their hearts. While scouting and inviting for new followers, Orteca sometimes fights Revice as the Daiouika Deadman.
Kamen Rider Revice: The Movie[]
Orteca as the Daiouika Deadman led the Giff Juniors to terrorizing a theme park and search for those to join his cause. Once Kamen Rider Revice intercepted him, the Daiouika Deadman was forced to evacuate. However, he succeeded in finding a worthy follower and granted him the Spider Proto Vistamp.
Gathering The Giftex[]
While he and his accomplices continue to spawn more Deadmans for their cause, the Deadmans would come across the mysterious Kamen Rider Evil, Kagero. The Deadmans would form a temporary alliance with Kagero out of shared interests, working together to implode the Igarashi family. As new Kamen Riders are produced to oppose the Deadmans, this pushed them to continue gathering more Giftex by recruiting Yasushi Kudo and Amahiko Haitani to their cause.
Kamen Rider: Beyond Generations[]
Orteca, along with his fellow Deadmans executives, venture into an old Shocker base to release the demon Diablo. They also carry the Crisper Stamps, containing the genetic information of historical figures. The Deadmans joined along Diablo's plan to enact world domination. This led to Fenix's Kamen Riders joining forces with the Sword of Logos, and Diablo would be vanquished by their combined forces.
He arrives at Alaska to create a pillar of light. However, they are intercepted by Kamen Rider Demons, Sabela, and Durendal. However, the Deadmans executive put up an immense fight against the three heroes and withdrew after completing their mission. In the end, Diablo would be defeated and the plot to fully reawaken his power was foiled.
The Giff Ceremony[]
With the Deadmans close to obtain six Giftex, Orteca secretly teamed up with other sacrifices except Julio, to restrain Aguilera. He revealed his true colors and that Aguilera is the last untainted sacrifice to resurrect Giff. As the ceremony was carried out with the others, Fenix began raiding the Deadmans' hideout and the Orteca was forced to battle the Kamen Riders. He stunned Julio with his tentacles, who wanted to rescue Aguilera, but was eventually defeated by Kamen Rider Live. The Deadmans' base was also destroyed by Kamen Rider Revice.
With Giff seemingly destroyed, Orteca was subdued by Fenix until Julio attacked him. Orteca then became the Daiouika Deadman and pushed Julio aside. He was forced to see Aguilera transforming into the Queen Bee Deadman, desecrating her from being Giff's pure vessel. Orteca later escaped with the Chameleon Deadman. With Aguilera and Julio out of the picture, Orteca was the only one to control of the Deadmans. Afterwards, the Chameleon Deadman asked how he sold his soul to Deadmans, and revealed his hidden ambition to conquer the world.
Reassembling the Deadmans[]
With the Giff Stamp in his possession, Orteca began rallying the rest of the scattered Deadmans followers. He started stamping up his followers and became Gifftarians, which have proven to be formidable foes who cannot be separated from the consumed host. This led Ikki Igarashi to access the power of Volcano Rex Vistamp in an attempt to stop him. Orteca could not help express his distain to Julio for siding with Aguilera, by turning his best friend Yosuke Okuda into a Gifftarian, much to Julio's anguish.
After Chigusa Yamagiri infiltrated the Deadmans, Orteca revealed to her Fenix's true goals and persuaded her to defect to their side. Orteca had Chigusa feed Fenix information to draw them into an ambush and lure Hiromi to seize the Demons Driver. Once Hiromi realized the true nature of the Demons Driver, he went to confront Orteca and Chigusa. Orteca would turn Chigusa into a Gifftarian to attack Hiromi. He then battled the Kamen Riders assisted by Aguilera and Julio, resulting in him seemingly losing the Giff Stamp and being apprehended by Fenix, only for him to flash a smirk as he was led away.
Becoming Kamen Rider Demons[]
After being taken into custody by Fenix, Orteca was able to escape with the assistance of Fenix director Hideo Akaishi and gave him the Giff Stamp. He deliberately allowed himself to be arrested by Fenix to seize the Demons Driver. Orteca transformed into Demons, which allowed him to draw out its potential far beyond Hiromi Kadota's usage. After defeating the Igarashi siblings and knocking Hiromi off the cliff. He declared himself as the new & official Kamen Rider Demons before leaving. Aguilera would later offer a truce to work together to revive Giff.
Wanting to raise the Demons Driver's true potential, Orteca kidnapped George Karizaki to strengthen the belt. However, this incidentally allowed the demon within the Demons Driver, Vail to be temporarily released from the belt. After Vail returned, Orteca attained the Demons Driver's true power through the Anomalocaris Proto Vistamp, but suffered a humiliating defeat from Kamen Rider Holy Live. In the end, he would lose the Demons Driver in the process.
Final Battle and Absorption[]
- "The world... wasn't... mine..."
- ―Orteca's final words before his supposed death.[src]
With Giff being close to resurrecting, Orteca continued creating human sacrifices to feed his master. While Kamen Riders Holy Live and Jeanne arrived to confront him, they were blindsided by a rampant Jack Revice, only managing to subdue him with Karizaki's assistance after the latter became Demons. Orteca took advantage of the Anomalocaris Proto Vistamp to merge with Giff, becoming the Anomalocaris Deadman. Although he became a frightening opponent against the Kamen Riders, Orteca was finally defeated when Ikki and Vice joined together to become Kamen Rider Revice. After being separated by Giff, he was suddenly caught within its grasp. Realizing his fate, Orteca lamented that he wasn't able to rule the world, but remembered the times he had with Aguilera and Julio, before being completely consumed by Giff.
Eventual Fate[]
Despite being seemingly consumed by Giff, it is later revealed that Orteca actually survived. However, he lays dormant within Giff's dimension along with the other victims. When Ultimate Revice and EvilytyLive work together to seal Giff away, the gate to the dimension was opened and freed everyone trapped in it, including Orteca. Orteca would later be found by his former Deadmans comrades, Hana and Tamaki, neither of which have forgiven him. Hiromi and Daiji then caught up with them and immediately put Orteca into Weekend's custody. George temporarily recruits Orteca to save the Igarashi family from Azuma's group in Area 666, in exchange for reduced jail time. [Kamen Rider Revice: Battle Familia]
Months after the disbandment of Weekend, leading into the formation of Blue Bird, Orteca is later sentenced to 666 years in prison,[2][3] with Karizaki occasionally paying him visits in his cell.
Post-Series & Other Events[]
Kamen Rider Saber[]
One night, Orteca as the Daiouika Deadman came across a man named Junpei and granted him the Batta Proto Vistamp to manifest the Batta Deadman. He promises him that it will make his bonds with his childhood friends stronger. Although it created the Batta Deadman, it promptly attacked two friends instead. However, the Batta Deadman was vanquished by Kamen Riders Saber and Espada with the help of Revi and Vice.[4]
Juuga vs Orteca[]
Personality[]
Soft-spoken and calculated, Orteca is the most level-headed member of Deadmans. Rarely phased by anything, he is quick to adapt to changing circumstances rather than becoming frustrated when things do not go according to plan. Orteca is also a very manipulative person and uses his charming nature to recruit people to create Deadmen. Unlike Julio and most other people, Orteca is not afraid of speaking to Aguilera in a way that can be considered disrespectful as he would also mock her when she mourns Giff, insulting her position and purpose in the Deadmans. Orteca is also shown to be very secretive even to his allies, as he didn't reveal the truth about Giff's revival to Aguilera and Julio until they finally retrieve the Giff Stamp.
After Orteca gained possession of the Giff Stamp, he has become much more heartless and cruel, showing no regret nor remorse in sacrificing his own allies into becoming Gifftarians. His arrogance became more uncontrollable ever since he lost his Gifftex powers and became Kamen Rider Demons. Due to his own lust for power, he kidnapped George Karizaki solely for the purpose of making him unlock more of the Demons Driver's potential. Ironically, this would contribute to Orteca's own downfall as it would result in Vail escaping and betraying him, who later awoke to its true powers.
In reality, Orteca under his birth name 'Makoto' had suffered abuse and harassment from his father and scholastic peers due to his intelligence and opposing beliefs, which is exemplified by his resentment towards society. Orteca holds a self-infatuated opinion of himself which was motivating his sadistic and ambitious actions to rule the world which would have been a way to prove his worth to the society that deemed him to be a monster as well as a way to exact his revenge against those who robbed him of his individuality aspirations and humanity. Sadly it was not meant to be as Orteca at the height of folly was hoisted by his own petard which said "petard" thwarted his self-indulgent desires for world adulation.
In what could be seen as his last moments, at first he remembered the times he had with Aguilera and Julio, implying that he truly saw them as those who really did understand him, but shortly after it's revealed that he's only concerned about having failed to make the world his, remembering his attempts to achieve it which was formerly done by working together with both of them, as he was being consumed by Giff. Nevertheless, Orteca managed to remain calm and maintain his composure in his defeat and impending doom.
Even after his rescue from Giff's dimension, Orteca retains his superiority complex and desire to claim the world as his own. Compared to his former Deadmans associates who have redeemed themselves in service towards society and have forged true found-family ties with the Igarashis and their allies, Orteca remains stuck in his old ways and twisted beliefs on family as seen from his attempts at establishing the Neo-Deadmans.
Powers and Abilities[]
Former Powers[]
- Deadman Transformation: Using the Daiouika Proto Vistamp, Orteca is able to transform into the Daiouika Deadman. After he was defeated by Revice and his Deadman form was absorbed by Giff, he was reverted to a normal human. He later regained the ability after using the Anomalocaris Proto Vistamp to transform into the Anomalocaris Deadman, only to quickly be reverted back upon his defeat at the hands of Revice.
Abilities[]
- High-Level Intellect: Since childhood, Orteca possessed an intelligence level that far exceeded the average adult, as he was capable of "teaching" his teachers highly complex mathematical equations easily. As a member of the Deadmans, he uses his intelligence to formulate multiple plans for his allies.
- Demons Driver Synchronization: Vail, the demon within the Demons Driver, recognized Orteca as a fellow demon even after being stripped of his Deadman form. This allowed Orteca to access the full potential of the Demons Driver. However, Vail can still limit how many Genomixes can be used simultaneously.

All of Demons' statistics exceed that of Revi and Vice's standard forms. Compared to Kamen Rider Evil, Demons has higher punching and kicking power but lower jumping height and running speed. Demons can fire string from his hands to restrain an enemy or suspend himself from a surface with webbing produced from his belt. He can also release large spider webs from his shoulder or hand to trap the opponent. Demons can create a red energy web to protect himself from enemy attacks. By covering his hand in red energy, Demons can split enemy projectiles and enhance his punches. After having George unlock the Demons Driver's full potential, Demons can launch balls of purple acid or create duplicates of the small spider that appears during his transformation and fire them as spinning projectiles.
Orteca's usage of Demons is much more powerful than Hiromi's, allowing him to fight Revi Volcano Genome, Vice Barid Genome, and Jeanne simultaneously and defeat them. In addition, Orteca does not suffer any adverse effects from using the Demons Driver and is able to perform a Genomix using multiple Vistamps.
Spider Genome consists of the following parts:
- Demon Geno Head (デモンゲノヘッド, Demon Geno Heddo): The head.
- Demon Facetringer (デモンフェイストリンガー, Demon Feisutoringā): The special face armament. It is armed with spider's characteristic abilities from the genetic information of the Spider Vistamp.

- George Karizaki/Kamen Rider Demons (II)/Kamen Rider Juuga: Orteca kidnapped George to demand him to unlock Demons' full powers, though George managed to take full advantage of the situation. As fellow geniuses in their domains, George and Orteca have developed somewhat of a frenemy relationship, with George taking pleasure in feuding with someone whom he could consider as his equal, and Orteca seemingly reciprocating that sentiment.
- Hana Natsuki/(Kamen Rider) Aguilera: Orteca reveals his true colours, betraying Aguilera that she was to be the sacrifice for Giff to be revived. Aguilera goes to Orteca again in an aliance to bring Giff back, though things go awry when Orteca continuously creates more Gifftarians through innocent people. Up until his initial defeat at the hands of Giff himself, Orteca took delight in constantly angering Aguilera with his own treacherous actions. Ironically, upon his return, Orteca would be unnerved by the presence of a redeemed Hana, whose journey towards redemption has given her true strength to stand up against him.
- Go Tamaki/Julio/Kamen Rider Over Demons (II): Throughout their time working together as the Deadmans, Orteca saw Julio as nothing more than Aguilera's obedient lapdog, and thus kept the truth of Aguilera's role as Giff's sacrifice from him. Upon revealing his betrayal of Aguilera, Orteca found it easy to turn against Julio as well, going to the lengths of sacrificing Julio's friend to turn him into a Gifftarian. Upon Orteca's return from Giff's dimension, however, a redeemed Tamaki is now unfazed by Orteca's insults.
- Kagero/Kamen Rider Evil: Once they were allies when Daiji was possessed, now enemies when he helped the Igarashi siblings find the Deadmans' base. Eventually they fought as Demons and Evil, when he suspects Giff's influence affecting him too.
Others[]
- Vail: When Orteca took the Demons Driver, Vail sensed if he was a demon too. Vail left the Demons Driver for a time to possess Genta again, but returns to help Orteca once again as a means of entertainment and to help him unlock Demons' true potential. Vail leaves him once again, after losing his cool against Holy Live and the Demons Driver left behind in defeat.
- Giff: The powerful demon that Orteca serves under for the Deadmans. Giff ends up absorbing him in the end.
Behind the Scenes[]
Portrayal[]
- Orteca is portrayed by Hayata Seki (関 隼汰, Seki Hayata). As a child, he is portrayed by Takeru Ishida (石田 偉琉, Ishida Takeru).
- As the Daiouika Deadman, Kamen Rider Demons and Anomalocaris Deadman, his suit actor is Shogo Teramoto (寺本 翔悟, Teramoto Shōgo). In Kamen Rider Juuga VS Kamen Rider Orteca, his suit actor as Kamen Rider Orteca is Masashi Takada (高田 将司, Takada Masashi).
Etymology[]
- Orteca's name likely combines the names of the Aztecs (Spanish: Azteca), the ones who made Tenochtitlan and are known for their sacrificial rituals, and the Olmecs (Spanish: Olmeca), the creators of the famous stone heads. Orteca could also be a mispronunciation of the surname of Spanish origin Ortega, related to the Latin word Urtica, which means "nettle".
Notes[]
- Orteca's squid motif pays homage to Dr. Shinigami, one of the first two Shocker generals from the 1971 Kamen Rider TV series.
- According to an interview by Taku Mochizuki in Toei Hero MAX, Orteca was originally set up as a dark doctor.[11]
- According to designer Masato Hisa, Daiouika Deadman's design also includes a goat and narwhal aesthetic to reflect his demon motif.[12]
- His weapon Paranegro is a portmanteau of paraguas (umbrella in Spanish) & negro (black in the same language).
- Orteca becoming Kamen Rider Demons harkens back to his first in-media appearance in Kamen Rider Revice: The Movie, where he is shown passing on the Spider Proto Vistamp.
- The Anomalocaris Deadman is a complete repaint and slight retool of the Daiouika Deadman, tying to the fact that both Deadmen share a contract with the same host.
- Kamen Rider Orteca was revealed months prior on a promotional shirt featuring all the Kamen Riders in Revice.[13]
- Kamen Rider Orteca's design is retooled from the Kamen Rider Demons Trooper β and the Octopus Halfbody's right shoulder piece.
