History
Background
As a child, Michinaga had a plush of a buffalo which he deeply treasured. He later developed a troubled relationship with his father during his teenage years, and left home as a result. [Jack-Of-All-Trades!? A Day in the Life of Master Micchi]
When Michinaga was in high school, he and his best friend Toru Imai fought a group of bullies before they were taken in by a "boss".
At some point later in their adulthood, they became construction workers. However, Toru became a contestant of the Desire Grand Prix where he was killed by two enemy Kamen Riders. After Toru died in Michinaga's arms, Michinaga was saved by Ace Ukiyo, who rescued him from two Jyamato. Michinaga was later knocked unconscious by Desire Grand Prix staff and taken away.
Sometime later, Michinaga was approached by Tsumuri and regained his memories regarding Toru's death, having sworn to destroy the Kamen Riders and joined as a contestant himself, becoming Kamen Rider Buffa.
Daybreak/Encounter Arc
After advancing to the final round, Michinaga joined Ace Ukiyo and Takeshi Goutokuji as one of the three remaining competitors. Alongside Shirowe, he transforms into Buffa and is deployed the city. After witnessing Goutokuji save them, Michinaga accused him of saving Keiwa Sakurai and Neon Kurama to score extra points. When Goutokuji was instantly killed by the Slug Fortress Jyamato, Michinaga laughed since it meant he had one less obstacle to overcome. To Michinaga's disapproval, Ace showed up and defeated the last boss, ending Michinaga's chances of victory.
In the new world, Michinaga lost all of his memories. As the next edition of the DGP began, Michinaga accepted Tsumuri's invitation to participate in the new tournament, restoring his memories as Kamen Rider Buffa in the process. He would also meet with Keiwa and Neon again, though initially doubting their odds of survival. During the Treasure Hunting mission of the competition, Michinaga would acquire the Zombie Raise Buckle again, but is forced to relinquish it after losing a bet with Ace during the Zombie Hunting mission. He also forms a temporary truce with Kanato Sumida in exchange for the Magnum Buckle, before Kanato himself was eliminated from the tournament.
During the Concentration game, Michinaga was paired with Keiwa but they couldn't become a cohesive team. This was mostly due to Michinaga regarding all players as his enemy and saw it as his goal to crush every Kamen Rider in an ideal world. Michinaga was matched up with Morio Koganeya once he bought a ticket to exchange partners. However, after observing Morio's devious nature, Michinaga decided to buy a ticket to team up with Keiwa again, teaming up in order to reach second place in the third round.
In the final round, the players are forced to battle the Saboten Knight Jyamato, a final boss that annihilated every player in a past tournament. The Jyamato proved to be resilient and Keiwa was booted after sustaining too much damage. Michinaga and Neon engaged in combat against the Jyamato, the former attempts to utilize the Drill Buckle, but both are brushed aside. Michinaga refuses to bow down as he believes that death will makes him stronger like zombies. Before the Jyamato could strike him down, Ace steps in to awaken the Monster Buckle. After watching Geats defeat the last boss, Michinaga expresses his anger and promises Ace that he will win some day.
Conspiracy Arc
In the final round of the third DGP, Michinaga ignored the rules of the Battleship game and faced the final boss head on in an attempt to get a high score. His stubbornness and refusal to work as a team with Neon and Keiwa led to his demise, with Ace holding him in his arms as he lay dying, frustrated that he couldn’t win and wondered what made Ace so special compared to him. After his elimination, Michinaga was seemingly transported to Archimedel's garden, with the latter expressing his genuine surprise to see that unlike the other dead DGP players, Azuma narrowly escape death due to the overusage of Zombie Raise Buckle.
Kamen Rider Geats × Revice: Movie Battle Royale
Due to Colus rewriting the world, Michinaga makes his return to Ace, Keiwa, and Neon despite his presumed death. Thus, he was allowed to participate in the Desire Royale. Michinaga battled Vice upon a moving train until he and Vice temporarily put aside their conflict to talk about how both had recently been revived after being "dead". Their conversation was cut short when Kamen Rider Ouja appeared, with Buffa challenging him. The two fought for a time until Ouja used Venosnaker to defeat Michinaga and eliminate him from the first round of the Desire Royale. Michinaga later returned for the interrupted final round, and later vanished after the world had been reset once more.
Divergence Arc
At Archimedel's garden, Michinaga learned that the Jyamato were feeding on the damaged Rider Core IDs, allowing them to evolve and grow stronger. He attempted to escape from the Jyamato Riders by transforming using his damaged Core ID. And with the Jyamato Raise Buckle he stole from the Jyamato rider he killed using brute force, while he manages to access an agonizing new form, he also discovered something that he shouldn't have; an area which completely covered with Jyamato plantation. He somehow returned to the real world and was spotted by Ace, whom he reports to about the evolving Jyamato, but continues to strengthen his stance of his original wish regardless of his new status. After parting with Ace, Michinaga's usage of the Jyamato Buckle causes him to fall unconscious in an alleyway, where he is found by Niramu and returned to the garden out of the latter's desire to not disrupt the paradox of reality.
Returned to the garden, Michinaga finds that he is slowly mutating into a Jyamato, evidenced by the growing vines on his right hand. He is then met with a woman named Beroba who offered to sponsor him in exchange for his partnership in helping her taking down the Desire Grand Prix, who are in possession of a "goddess of genesis" which could turn the tides in their war. Although Michinaga is initially reluctant to take her offer, they are joined by Daichi Isuzu who offers to be their tactician. With a plan in mind, Michinaga returns to Earth and re-seizes his Zombie Buckle from Sae Ganaha, which he succeeds in doing so before his full mutation. Now with a sponsor and his Zombie Buckle, Michinaga decides to rejoin the DGP but is stopped by Niramu, who transforms into Kamen Rider Gazer. With the latter having ultimately witnessed Michinaga's seemingly immortal status due to the Zombie Buckle, he allowed Michinaga to proceed as he leaves, claiming that his existence is Real.
He later appeared alongside Beroba watching in the DPG sponsor room. He went to the garden to get ready to fight Chirami's GM Riders and take the Vision Driver. They later saw Ziin who transformed into Kamen Rider Ziin and take both Michinaga and Daichi out before Beroba escaped. They later went back to the garden and was told the truth about DGP by Beroba and Archimedel. He doesn't care about it and told them he will use them to order get his wish come true. He later approached Ace and Ziin; telling them there won't be any more wishes granted by the Kamen Rider, with Ace asking him is that his revenge. Michinaga says it isn't revenge but a wish, he later transforms into ZombieJyamato Form to fight him. As Ace momentarily get distracted by Ziin and Beroba conversations, Michinaga manages to struck him down and cancel his transformation. However, his victory is short lived as Beroba, accessing her gigantic Rider form, obliterating the Jyamar Garden with a single blow, forcing him to retreat.
Lamentation Arc
With the begin of Jyamato Grand Prix, Michinaga was given the entry right for the new tournament due to his current physiology as a half-Jyamato, along with a new outfit given by Beroba. Surprising to see a Knight Jyamato, who possess the memories and appearance of Toru, Michinaga started to fight with him, treating him as his real best friend. During the Lightning Jyamato Festival, the duo successfully defeats Keiwa and Nago in the first round, forcing Ace to fight alone and driving him to the corner with Beroba providing him Command Twin Buckle by finishing Secret Mission, despite Ziin's assistance to fend off Knight Jyamato.
Yearning Arc
Michinaga then began hunting down all the Kamen Riders recruited by Chirami with his new Jyamashin powers. Michinaga eventually confronted Chirami himself and fought both him and Ziin. After tossing Ziin aside, Buffa cornered Chirami, only for Ace to suddenly return and intervene. However, Ace then unexpectedly turned on Chirami and assisted Buffa in eliminating him, having resolved to bring down the DGP now that he had uncovered the truth about his mother. It was at that moment that Ace and Michinaga were summoned before Suel, who introduced himself as the overseer of the "Desire Royale" and offered to grant the desire of whoever won it. In addition to Ace and Michinaga, Suel also allowed Neon, Daichi Isuzu and Keiwa's sister Sara to participate in it, with Keiwa joining as well after he was revived and manipulated into becoming a Rider again by Kekera. Eventually, Michinaga was able to eliminate every Rider in the Desire Royale except for Ace and Keiwa.
However, the Desire Royale turned out to just be a way for Suel to keep the Riders distracted while he and Niramu made preparations for the Grand End. Once the Grand End began, Michinaga's memories of the Desire Grand Prix were erased.
Genesis Arc
Michinaga regained his memories when Ace halted the Grand End with his new Geats IX form. Michinaga and Keiwa were then both approached by Ace, who asked them to join the new "Desire Grand Prix" he was starting up to eliminate the remaining Jyamato. Both agreed and, after being given their Rider powers again, went out to hunt the new "Parasite Jyamato" that had mysteriously begun attacking. Renewing his beliefs that Kamen Rider is no longer his enemy, he fights against the Jyamato without relying his invulnerability. However, unknown to himself, the first target he strike down was actually Sara, who has already entered Phase 2 Jyamatization, which the incident was actually being manipulated by Beroba and Daichi, causing Keiwa to join the dark side, using Tsumuri to create Bujin Sword Buckle. The unexpected outcome has caused Michinaga losing all choice, only able to strike down every Jyamato in front of him, convincing himself all defeated victims are necessary sacrifices, which seriously haunted him.
After Keiwa recreates the world, he tries to redeem his wrongs by fighting against Keiwa, Beroba and Kekera respectively, only having himself getting defeated and humiliated by his opponents' new powers. With Ace's resolve to change Keiwa's mind and Win's efforts to save Tsumuri. the world has reverted to normal, Michinaga decides to redeem himself by having Daichi to save Sara and having himself to settle score with Beroba. Though being suppressed in the battle, Michinaga has reaffirmed his resolve to defeat his Rider enemies, reawakening his Jyamashin powers, making him successfully defeat Beroba. When Kekera tried assaulting him as he was exhausted from the battle, Michinaga was saved be Keiwa, who regained his kind heart. The two apologized to each other for their own mistakes. He later meets the Sakurai siblings again to apologize to Sara, who accepts his apology. Soon afterwards, he was turn into a buffalo puppet, due to Kekera's wish to recreate a world where Tycoon is the only Kamen Rider, only able to revert to normal after Keiwa defeats Kekera.
Suel soon begins the End of Desire Grand Prix in order to restart the Grand End, while Buffa successfully suppress a few End Riders transformed by civilians at first, he was soon being forced to fight defensive in order to prevent them being killed by the Game Masters due to being defeated. Buffa Jyamashin appeared in the fight against Regad Omega, but when it continues, it loses its power. Later, Geats as the God of Genesis returned, and using his powers, returned the Rider Core IDs and Desire Drivers to Michinaga, Keiwa, and Neon. As they used their single forms to attack Regad Omega, they were caught in Regad Omega's Reverse. After GeatsIX defeated Suel, he began to recreate the world, he said that they would have to forget about him, but Michinaga tells him to stop "cheating" others, but as Ace did his fox sign, he even smiles to see Ace walks towards his godhood.
After the world was recreated to a happy one, Michinaga returns his life as a construction worker. Different from his past self after his best friend's death, he now tries to get along with his co-workers, and makes a new wish, to eat delicious meat.

Personality
Michinaga exudes a cold, standoffish, and headstrong attitude that reflects his buffalo motif, he often takes rash action without thinking. His brashness is also reflected in his combat style, often charging headfirst into battle and preferring to rely on brute strength and close combat, even with ranged and non-melee weapons. His recklessness correlates to his zombie motif, as Michinaga does not fear death as he believed it only made him stronger. His lack of care of his own well being is further shown in him going so far to transform using a broken ID Core, becoming a Jyamato in the process, and use the Raising Sword on himself so he can use its power. Even when he actually died for the first time and revived, he saw this as one of many obstacles needed to hurdle through to reach his goal of eliminating the Kamen Riders.
Due to the tragedy involving his best friend Toru Imai's death, who was killed in the Desire Grand Prix and mocked by other Riders as he died, Michinaga comes to hate every single Rider, believing all of them to be self-serving evil people like the Riders who left Toru for dead, seeking to eliminate them all. His hatred is shown where he will reject help/advice from other Riders even in dire situations, twist any of their good deeds as something done for ulterior motives, and thriving over their misery or death, shown with Takeshi Goutokuji's death. Later it's revealed that his true goal is to destroy the Desire Grand Prix's rotten system, and he wants to stop the cruelty done by the management and the Riders, as well as the Jyamato when he decides to target them. Though he seeks to root out the corrupt system, he will do almost anything to achieve it, such as allowing the Jyamato Grand Prix to be run, including taking part in a game that causes many casualties. He's also adamant in doing things his way only, due to his stubbornness, and also has no qualms emulating those that he despises, such as stealing the Zombie Buckle from Sae Ganaha, something that happened to Toru, something that he admits when Beroba mentions it.
Despite his ruthlessness, Michinaga still holds some impartiality towards Riders such as Keiwa Sakurai, who would never mock others even in death. He draws a line at certain dirty strategies such as players playing dirty to eliminate one another, particularly by sabotaging them or rigging a game to make it unfair for the opposing player, and he will target them first before the other Riders, foiling Daichi Isuzu's plan to set up Neon Kurama and Sara Sakurai's elimination after taking advantage of their trust. When Michinaga became the Jyamashin and began his crusade on the Riders, he simply destroyed their ID Cores and spared their lives, while leaving alone players who had yet to recover their memories and powers.
He views the casualties he left in his wake as necessary sacrifice for the greater good, which continues when he joins Ace's DGP to fight the Jyamato, though he starts to feel some guilt after apparently killing Keiwa's sister Sara, developing some conscience in form of Sara haunting him, but he tries to continue killing the other infectants as he thinks it's the only way, though Keiwa is still enraged of him trying to justify his killing of Sara. From that on, he tries to answer to his conscience and atone for his sins by making himself miserable so that others won't have to. He tries to get through Keiwa and looking for ways to save Sara. His attempts still failed as he still blames Keiwa for screwing up their attempts, despite that he's the one who killed her. Later he manages to atone by preventing Beroba for using Daichi's Tree of Knowledge to create the ultimate Jyamato by killing her, canceling her wish. No longer deflecting blames of himself, Michinaga finally profusely apologized to Keiwa, who returned to his original personality and saved him from Kekera.
Powers and Abilities
Powers
- Enhanced Vitality: As a result of his prolonged usage of the Zombie Buckle, Michinaga was able to survive his seeming demise and elimination, instead appearing alive in Archimedel's garden. He also manages to survive and confront Premium Beroba and Premium Kekera even after being stabbed by Bujin during his initial confrontation with Keiwa. This trait even makes Niramu commend Michinaga's absurd survival rate, later deeming this as "real".
- Rider Invulnerability: After obtaining his wish by becoming the Jyamashin, Michinaga is immune to any damage from any Kamen Rider, making him invincible. Signs of this power are shown via Buffa's helmet and cape, as well as a purplish aura that will glow at certain times. However, as Michinaga only worded his wish to be invincible against Kamen Riders, he is still vulnerable to other enemies such as the Jyamato. After the Grand End, this power is seemingly no longer functional since Michinaga no longer considers other Kamen Riders as enemies. Traits of this power briefly resurfaced during Michinaga's final battle with Beroba, one in which he emerged victorious from. Michinaga later reuses this power to fight against Suel, but his powers was removed by Regad Omega's Time Reverse Ability, rewinding his time back to the period before he become a Rider. It is unknown if he retain this trait or not after the world is reset by Ace.
- Jyamato Physiology: Despite being restored back to a human ever since becoming the Jyamashin, due to having used the Jyamato Buckle in the past, it left a "curse" within Michinaga to have a Jyamato sealed in his body. While originally dormant, the growth of the Jyamato within was slowly accelerated when Michinaga saw the rampaging Queen Jyamato, causing him to reexperience his memories of using the Jyamato Buckle through headaches, while giving him constant pain. The Jyamato within was then fully awakened when Beroba stabbed Michinaga, causing him suffer a painful process as his inner Jyamashin power returning to its uncontrollable state, while covered in a sinister looking dark purple aura. However, due to Michinaga's wish of wanting to create a world where everyone can gain happiness resonating with Ace, the latter's God of Creation powers merged with Michinaga's Jyamato within, resulting the creation of the Plosion Rage Raise Buckle. This buckle grants Michinaga his reunited Jyamashin powers, while still being able to fight not only as a part-Jyamato, but also as a human and a Kamen Rider.
Abilities
- Expert Combatant: Azuma is a skilled combatant even from his time as a high school student. This would later be used as his ability to fight as a Kamen Rider in the Desire Grand Prix. At one point, he could even defeat a Jyamato Rider in his Entry Form while his ID Core was damaged.
Former Weakness
- Jyamato Buckle: Because the Jyamato Buckle was meant to be used by a Jyamato Rider, Michinaga will slowly turn into a Jyamato when he uses it to transform. Furthermore, his initial uses of the Buckle caused him to get electrocuted by it and growing a green vine on his left hand. However, his body eventually adapts to the Jyamato Buckle's use, and he is no longer affected by the side effects. Michinaga is restored back to a human after becoming the Jyamashin with his Core ID repaired and no longer employs the Jyamato Buckle.

Entry Form (エントリーフォーム, Entorī Fōmu), also known as Entry Raise Form (エントリーレイズフォーム, Entorī Reizu Fōmu), is Buffa's base form, accessed through the sole usage of the Buffa Core ID in the Desire Driver.
When Buffa brute-forces his transformation with his broken Core ID, his left eye becomes cracked, and the Buffa Muleta on his right leg is blackened out with a torn and tattered appearance. Additionally, blue electricity constantly bursts from the driver, temporarily paralyzing him mid-battle.
Entry Form consists of the following parts:
- Buffa Head (バッファヘッド, Baffa Heddo): The head.
- Buffa Crest Gear (バッファクレストギア, Baffa Kuresuto Gia): Buffa's head-mounted device. It expands the player's head functions and protects the head with lightweight yet extremely strong composite armor. With a shape that symbolizes the Rider's crest on the ID Core, it also functions as a visual aid to increase Buffa's visibility.
- Buffa Horn (バッファホーン, Baffa Hōn): Buffa's horns. The super-hard horns increase psychological intimidation of the target as well as fighting ability, making them the most distinctive feature of Buffa, whose specialty is close combat.
- Buffa Eye (バッファアイ, Baffa Ai): Buffa's compound eyes. The visual information obtained here is transmitted via an internal display, protecting the player's eyes from intense light such as explosions that suddenly occur during a game.
- Audit Signal (オーディットシグナル, Ōditto Shigunaru): Buffa's inspection device. By constantly monitoring the Kamen Rider's condition, it diagnoses the continuity of transformation based on operating efficiency, damage, etc., and cancels the transformation if necessary.
- Blank Crusher (ブランククラッシャー, Buranku Kurasshā): Buffa's mouth section. The voice chat function enables clear conversations even with loud noise, allowing communication between Kamen Riders during cooperative play, etc.
- Desire Basic (デザイアベーシック, Dezaia Bēshikku): The suit-type gaming device. Using energy supplied from the Desire Driver, it raises the output of the player's physical abilities.
- Progressive Arm (プログレッシブアーム, Puroguresshibu Āmu): Entry Form's arms. They produce enough power to defeat the Jyamato by increasing the player's arm strength. Furthermore, various functions can be added by attaching expansion equipment.
- Entry Glove (エントリーグローブ, Entorī Gurōbu): Entry Form's gloves. They can be configured for high sensitivity to perform more delicate work than can be done with bare hands. They can also be customized with the features of various Raise Buckles.
- Buffa Muleta (バッファムレータ, Baffa Murēta): Buffa's personal accessory. It increases the player's fighting spirit and winning percentage in battle.
- Progressive Leg (プログレッシブレッグ, Puroguresshibu Reggu): Entry Form's legs. They increase the player's leg strength to raise the game's survival rate. Furthermore, various functions can be added by attaching expansion equipment.
- Entry Boots (エントリーブーツ, Entorī Būtsu): Entry Form's boots. They boast excellent jumping power and running performance on the game field. They can also be customized with the features of various Raise Buckles.
Buffa's ID Core synergizes with the Zombie Buckle, so any form accessed with it is most powerful when used by him.

His hatred for Ace began when Ace told him to forget the DGP for his sake, after seeing Toru get beaten and left for dead by two other riders. In the Desire Royale, Michinaga comes to learn about Ace's wishes, finding out that they have similar goal in ending the DGP. Michinaga slowly starts letting himself go of his hatred towards him after finding out the real reasons behind Ace's wishes, currently helping Ace fulfilling his goal of creating the world where everyone could find happiness. When Ace is going to reset the world but make everyone forget him, Michinaga protests against losing his memories of Ace.
- Keiwa Sakurai/Kamen Rider Tycoon: Michinaga sees Keiwa as the weakest rider in the DGP, and is outwardly standoffish towards him, though he had some certain degree of respect because Keiwa reminds him of his old friend Toru and has shown him kindness such as giving him Zombie Buckle back. After apparently unknowingly killing Keiwa's sister, their relationship becomes strained to such an extent that the two confront each other, with a mortified Michinaga claimed responsibility. After Keiwa's desire was granted, Michinaga decides that he'll be the one who bring Keiwa's back to Ace as a form of atonement. Ultimately, Michinaga kept his word by finishing Beroba once and for all, so that Daichi's tree of knowledge can be reclaimed, which in turn allow Daichi to revive Sara. Thanks to Michinaga's effort, both Keiwa and him successfully make amends with each other.
- Neon Kurama/Kamen Rider Na-Go: Michinaga competes against and alongside Neon in the Desire Grand Prix. As a fellow Rider, he's also naturally hostile towards her, such as being hellbent on prematurely eliminating Neon during the Zombie round, as she's infected by one of the Zombified Jyamato, and later lumping her together with all the bad Riders he hates. During the Jyamato Grand Prix, Neon become one of Michinaga's target after he joined the Jyamato, although he also become visibly frustrated when Beroba reveals Neon dark secret. After the JGP, Michinaga no longer hunt Neon when she didn't become a rider, although after she's forced to join the Desire Royale, Michinaga is the one who breaks Na-Go ID Core so that Neon will be spared from a Kamen Rider's tragic fate. After the Grand End is postponed, Michinaga once again showed his worries after learning that Beroba kidnapped Neon and even berates Keiwa for this incident, as Keiwa is in cahoots with the perpetrator.

Until the next Desire Grand Prix, he meets him again, this time under real identity (yet he tries to hide his allegiance with the DGP staff from the competitors). In return, Beroba actively try to make Michinaga suffer again, and took delight upon watching him miserable. Ironically, it's also Michinaga who pointed about Beroba's misery due to her defeat by Na-Go, in which the latter become hysterical and refuses to accept the said fact. Once the Bad End Game starts, Michinaga decides to settle everything with Beroba, whom about to use the Tree of Knowledge to produce the most powerful Jyamato, and emerges Victorious. - Michinaga was originally 23-years-old and scary-looking. However due to the casting of Mokudai in the role, who is considerably younger, head-writer Yuya Takahashi rewrote the character to closer resemble Mokudai more.[24]
- Mokudai portrays Michinaga with a calm and confident nature to prevent the character from looking like he was actually weak and putting up a bravado. On the suit-acting, Nawata makes it a habit to ring his neck and walk languidly before battle.[25]
- Michinaga is the only other character aside from Ace to appear in all 49 episodes of Geats.
- A recurring gag involving Michinaga is his motif mistaken of being a "cow" or a "bull," prompting him to clarify that he is a "buffalo."
