Maya (真夜) is the human form of the Pearlshell Fangire (パールシェルファンガイア, Pārusheru Fangire) and the original Queen (クイーン, Kuīn) of the Checkmate Four in 1986, possessing the Queen tattoo on her palm. She is the mother of Wataru Kurenai and Taiga Nobori. Her true name is The Blood Relatives of the Grim Nüwa (冷厳なる女鍋の血族, Reigen naru Joka no Ketsuzoku) and she is from the Aqua Class.

History[]

1986[]

The second strongest of the Checkmate Four and consort to the King, Maya is in charge of executing any Fangire who betrays their kind, such as those who mate with humans. She has lived for centuries, meeting Antonio Stradivari and Antonio Vivaldi and becoming their pupil, gaining an admiration for their genius and a love for human art. After Vivaldi's death, Maya found no other human like him until she crosses paths with Otoya, questioning her mission and the concept of love. Accompanying Otoya while he lost his memory, she starts to question humanity, becoming more close to Otoya.

Eventually, Maya is forced to reveal her true identity as a Fangire to Otoya when attacked by Riki who tried to warn his friend about Maya's true nature. But when Otoya refuses to kill her, she asks him to let her help him into creating an ideal violin for him, wishing to see his full potential.

Once successfully creating the Bloody Rose, Maya tries to part with Otoya to protect him from the Fangire King's wrath. However, in spite of Otoya telling her that they can never meet again, Maya falls in love with Otoya instead of her initial intent to kill him. Confronted by the King, Maya reveals to him that she reciprocates Otoya's love for her, causing the King to become enraged.

Jiro then suddenly appears to save Otoya, only to become sealed into the Garuru Saber. Enraged, Otoya ignores Maya's pleas and attempts to fight the King, leading to a very one-sided fight betwen them. Easily defeating Otoya as Ixa, the King abducts him, with Maya too afraid to stop him.

Later, convinced by Yuri to save Otoya, Maya assists her in finding him, going into the lost woods. Despite being weakened there, Maya easily stops the Silkmoth Fangire's attack on Yuri, much to the latter's annoyance. In their search, Maya hears Otoya's violin music from afar, allowing them to reach Castle Doran.

Narrowly stopping the King from executing Otoya, Maya transforms into the Pearlshell Fangire, giving enough time for Otoya and Yuri to escape.

Defeated, Maya is questioned by the King whether she truly loves Otoya. Without hesitation, Maya affirms this to be true, causing the King to strip Maya of her title and powers.

Now powerless, Maya was later attacked by the Polar Fangire, with only Yuri's intervention saving her. Though initially despairing her situation, Maya is comforted by Otoya, giving her the means to restart their life. Suddenly though, Wataru appears before them, revealing that he had traveled from the future to prevent his birth.

While Otoya wasn't initially convinced of Wataru's story, Maya felt differently, having recognized the button that Wataru showed her. Afterwards, at a public park, Maya confronts Wataru, stating that she can sense his half Fangire nature. Amidst their conversation, the Polar Fangire appears to attack Maya, ambushing Wataru. With Kivat-Bat the 3rd arriving from the future, Wataru transforms into Kamen Rider Kiva, much to Maya's shock. Fully convinced that Wataru is indeed her son from the future, Maya heeds his instruction to retreat, running into the King mid-way.

The King tells Maya that if she continues to meet with Otoya, he will murder Taiga as retribution, stating that a traitor's son has no place in his life. Unable to let this happen, Maya requests Kivat-Bat the 2nd to tell Otoya that they can't meet again, much to Otoya's puzzlement. Upon learning of the King's actions, Otoya states that he will defeat him and save Taiga, to which Maya states as an impossible task. Recognizing that Wataru may have a chance of stopping the King, Maya asks that he fight for them, seeing it as the only alternate means available. Wataru finds himself puzzled with the situation, being unsure of what he needed to do.

Seeing no other viable options, Otoya eventually decides to use Kivat-Bat the 2nd's powers to fight the King, despite Maya's continued objections. Aware that Otoya has resigned himself to die saving the Arm Monsters and Taiga, Maya entrusts Wataru with his father's life, seeing him as the only one capable of carrying out Otoya's will.

Combining their powers, Otoya and Wataru successfully defeat the King, fatally wounding him with a Double Rider Kick. In a last ditch effort, the King attempts to kill Maya and Taiga, only for Taiga to awaken his powers and protect them from his father's attack. The battle ended, Maya and Otoya oversee Wataru return to his time period, assuring him that things will be fine. With Otoya approaching death, Maya has a final date with him, allowing him to die in peace.

2008[]

Maya eventually gave birth to Wataru, leaving him as a child in order to protect him, telling him to become strong. Maya was then exiled to a location only the Bishop knows of, hiding herself from other Fangires that seek to kill her. By 2008, now wearing an eye patch, Maya is found by her successor Mio, explaining to her how succession works along with realizing that Mio is following a path similar to her own. She also sensed Wataru's growing power at one point, tearfully voicing her desire to reunite with him.

Taiga later visits his mother to learn the truth about Wataru's heritage, bringing him to her location afterwards. Once learning the truth, Wataru attempts to speak with Maya once more, only for Maya to state that he should not be with her. Unable to accept the situation, Wataru would go on to doubt himself, especially when Bishop temporarily caused him to go berserk. Sensing her son's emotional pain, Maya appeared before him in his dreams, encouraging him to accept his heritage and not lose hope.

After being knocked out by a distraught Taiga who takes Kivat-Bat the 2nd as his own and claiming to have killed her, Maya reveals herself after seeing her sons defeat the Bat Fangire together and expresses her pride in her sons finally working together.

Personality[]

Initially, Maya was a carefree individual with a haughty demeanor, stemming from her high power and status. Unlike most Fangires, Maya did not show any hostility toward humans, viewing them as forms of amusement. Though usually dismissive of threats, Maya did appear to understand the limits of her own strength, recognizing the King's powers to surpass her entirely. Therefore, she did not dare to oppose him in a serious fight, fearing his wrath.

Deeply appreciating violin music, Maya bonded with Otoya over their mutual interest, slowly developing an attraction toward him. From this and Yuri's words, Maya found the courage to face the King later on, admitting that she truly loved Otoya. Upon losing her powers and status, Maya's demeanor changed significantly, becoming more reserved in nature.

Surprisingly, in stark contrast to her usual demeanor, Maya possesses a strong sense of care toward her loved ones, showing genuine concern for their well-being. Notably, during Wataru's childhood, Maya revealed a more soft side to herself, playfully engaging in hide-and-seek with Wataru at one point.

Abilities[]

  • Psychic Powers: As the former Queen of Fangires, Maya had several psychic powers at her disposal, being capable of feats such as: heal injuries of others, conjure multiple energy orbs, and instantly turn day into night. Even in a depowered state, Maya not only retains the same appearance (age-wise), but has the ability to sense one's heritage as a Fangire and enter the dreams of others.
  • Superhuman Capabilities (formerly): Without transforming into Fangire form, Maya could easily overwhelm a skilled warrior like Yuri Asao as Ixa, as well as an empowered Silkworm Fangire. Upon being depowered though, she is no longer capable of such prowess, unable to fight back against non-human threats.
  • Master Violinist: Similar to her lover and second son, Maya is supremely skilled at playing the violin, allowing her to copy Otoya's music when using a normal violin.
  • Violin Craftsman: Being a student of several famous violin players in the past, Maya possesses great knowledge on crafting violins, with it being what allowed her and Otoya to create the Bloody Rose.

Pearlshell Fangire[]

Pearlshell Fangire

  • Height: 182 cm
  • Weight: 75 kg

As the Pearlshell Fangire, Maya is much more powerful and long-lived than an average Fangire, with only the King her definite superior. Having the power to create multiple pearls to attack and defend herself, Maya rarely relied on hand-to-hand combat, being content on overwhelming her foes with a simple attack. Unlike Mio, Maya showed herself capable of using this attack in human form, doing so without any trouble.

Much like Kiva, Maya can change the day into night with a blood red moon in the sky, a method she regularly used before executing someone.

Notes[]

  • The Pearlshell's hidden bird motif is a flamingo. Two flamingos can be seen on the suit, with the bodies on each shoulder while the necks and head intertwine across the chest.
  • She has an image song sung by Tetra-Fang in the DESTINY album, titled "Rainy Rose". The song is later covered by her actress Saki Kagami in the Re-UNION album.
