Lockseeds listed

List of main Lockseeds seen in Sid's tablet

Lockseeds (ロックシード, Rokkushīdo) are mysterious devices that are the source of the Armored Riders' powers. They all have powers associated with fruits, seeds, berries, and nuts. Lockseeds can grow on trees in the Helheim Forest, assuming the shape of a flower first.

The Inves love Lockseed flowers, regarding them as their favorite food. However, if an Inves consumes a mature Lockseed, it assumes its Berserker State, and if it consumes another mature Lockseed, then that Inves will evolve into its Evolved State.

In Inves Games, people use mature Lockseeds to summon Inves to do battle. When a person wearing a Sengoku/Genesis Driver picks Lockseed flowers, they will quickly turn into mature Lockseeds. When Inves Games starts, the Lockseeds say "Battle, Start!". After Inves Games battle, these Lockseeds can say "You Win!" or "You Lose..." depending on the results of battle. After a victory, the toy Lockseed can say "Rank Up!" which has yet to be used in the show.

In the Hyper Battle DVD, the Lockseeds were rusted, preventing transformations and Inves summoning.

If an Armored Rider summons an Inves in a battle, then they will be fully materialized in the real world, however if a Next Generation Rider summons an Inves, one Lockseed can call in three at a time. If one manages to jailbreak a Lockseed (though Sid had to show how to do so), they can summon fully materialized Inves as well without being an Armored Rider, although there is a chance for the Lockseed to malfunction.

Inves

The Inves love Lockseeds, regarding them as their favorite food. In the Helheim Forest, Inves eat immature Lockseeds by eating the core of the Lockseed and throwing the rest of it away immediately afterwards when they are done.

Main article: Helheim's Fruits

Immature Lockseeds, also known as the fruit of Helheim (ヘルヘイムの果実, Heruheimu no Kajitsu), are Lockseeds in their immature state that grow in the Helheim Forest. They normally look like fruit, however if anyone wearing a Sengoku Driver picks them they will turn into mature Lockseeds. The Inves love both types of Lockseeds, regarding them as their favorite and only food, and will attempt to protect them if they are picked.

People who don't wear a Driver when entering Helheim or/and nearby the place where the Helheim crack portal was opened out of nowhere also seem tempted to eat Immature Lockseeds, and it takes outside help to make sure they don't eat it.

When a living being does eat a premature Lockseed, be it human or an animal, it quickly rewrites the creature's DNA and minds, as they will turn into an Inves, and in human cases like Ryoji Hase did, into an Inves in a Berserker State, where the Yggdrasill higher-ups then calls them "Category H" Inves; Inves that were formerly human. Confirmed Category H Inves are:

  • Yuya Sumii of Team Gaim; devoured an immature Lockseed and mutated into a Byakko Inves. He was unknowingly killed by Armored Rider Gaim.
  • An unnamed maintenance worker; devoured an immature Lockseed and mutated into the Komori Inves (Mutant). He was killed by Armored Riders Gaim and Ryugen.
  • Ryoji Hase of Team Raid Wild; devoured an immature Lockseed and mutated into a Hekija Inves. While Gaim tried to help Ryoji reclaim his humanity, he was murdered by New Generation Rider Sigurd when Gaim could not gather the mental fortitude to slay Ryoji.

However, it can be used as an alternative food source if a person holding a Lockseed inserts it in a Sengoku Driver like Kouta Kazuraba and Takatora Kureshima who used a Himawari Lockseed as a substitute for food.

Classes

File:Lockss.png

Premature Lockseeds and a Mature Lockseed (Ichigo)

Matured Lockseeds are given ranks, from D to A, but it is unknown if either the number of the Lockseed, the chance of rarity of such a Lockseed being found, or a combination of the two makes the Lockseed's ranking.

A-Classed Lockseeds are normally unbreakable (though they can be devoured by an Inves or destroyed by an Overlord). Give their powerful nature, they are useful for both transformation as an Armored Rider or to summon a high classed Inves. One drawback is that the summoned Inves is in its Berserker State, and if said Inves consumes a Lockseed that summoned it or an entirely different Lockseed, it will evolve into a second form of itself called an Evolved State (進化態, Shinkatai).

Beyond the normal variety of Lockseeds, there exists another brand of Lockseed in the form of Lock Vehicle Lockseeds (ロックビークルロックシード, Rokku Bīkuru Rokkushīdo). They are indicated by their rougher design and their theme being based on flowers. Once unlocked, the Lock Vehicles will unfold from their Lockseed Modes into their Vehicle Modes, and have the capacity to breach into the Helheim Forest when they hit a certain speed. Due to these Lockseeds being made mainly as a mode of transportation, Lock Vehicle Lockseeds do not have a Lockseed ranking. They are quite rare to appear naturally, as Yggdrasill's mass picking for R&D might have made a hit to the appearance of Lock Vehicle Lockseeds.

Yggdrasill has managed to create fully functional artificial Lockseeds called Energy Lockseeds (エナジーロックシード, Enajī Rokkushīdo), more powerful Lockseeds that sacrifices the ability to summon a normal Arms Weapon when used in a Driver, instead summoning a Sonic Arrow. These particular Lockseeds can only be used by a New Generation Rider with a Genesis Driver, though there is a roundabout way Sengoku Driver-wearing Armored Riders can use Energy Lockseeds. In terms of rankings, Energy Lockseeds are given the general rank of Class S, outranking even the more powerful natural Lockseeds. Like A-Classed Lockseeds, they are normally unbreakable, though Rosyuo was able to easily dissolve Sid's Cherry Energy Lockseed with a force-based attack.

Its code is LS-06 and it is Class A. Kouta had found his Ichigo Lockseed, as well as his Orange Lockseed and Sengoku Driver, during his first adventure into the Helheim Forest; however, Peco managed to disarm it from him and then the Shika Inves Kouta summoned for an Inves Game consumed it to evolve into a Evolved Inves. Some time after, Gaim was able to obtain another Ichigo Lockseed, which had belonged to Team Invitto until they lost an Inves game to Ryugen, before he appears in the World within the Magic Stone.
  • Suika Lockseed (スイカロックシード, Suika Rokkushīdo, lit. "Watermelon Lockseed"): Allows Kamen Rider Gaim to transform into Suika Arms, a colossal mecha-like form that is capable of assuming 3 different modes and equipped with the Suika Sojinto while in Yoroi Mode. Its code is LS-10 and it is Class A. This Lockseed was originally in possession of Takatora Kureshima until Mitsuzane stole it from him. Another one is achieved, when Kouta got another Suika Lockseed in the Yggdrasill's base in Helheim Forest. After Kouta uses the Suika Lockseed, it loses its color and becomes unresponsive for a certain amount of time. In the toyline, the Suika Lockseed makes the sound of bowling pins being knocked down after its transformation call is announced. Kouta loaned his personal Suika Lockseed to Baron to fight Sigurd during a failed invasion into Yggdrasill, but has yet to get it back, while Ryugen has the one he stole from his brother.
  • Banana Lockseed (バナナロックシード, Banana Rokkushīdo): Allows Kamen Rider Gaim to transform into Banana Arms, equipped with the Banaspear. Its code is LS-08 and it is Class A. Gaim obtained this Energy Lockseed from DJ Sagara, along with a Genesis Core, when Kouta impressed the DJ with his sense of duty.
  • Cherry Energy Lockseed (チェリーエナジーロックシード, Cherī Enajī Rokkushīdo): Allows Kamen Rider Gaim to transform into Jimber Cherry Arms when he activates the Cherry Energy Lockseed on the Genesis Core after it is manually attached to the Sengoku Driver, granting him enhanced speed. Its code is ELS-02 and it is a Class-S. Its code is ELS-03 and it is a Class-S. Gaim obtains this Energy Lockseed by ripping it off of Marika's Genesis Driver when she wasn't expecting it.
  • Kachidoki Lockseed (カチドキロックシード, Kachidoki Rokkushīdo, lit. "Triumph Lockseed"): Allows Kamen Rider Gaim to transform into Kachidoki Arms, equipped with the DJ Gun as his Arms Weapon and the Kachidoki Bata twin flags attached to his back. Its code is KLS-01. Gaim obtained this Lockseed from DJ Sagara, who had created it by first transmutating an orange into a metallic version of one, then into the Kachidoki Lockseed. In the toyline, a cheaper varient of the Kachidoki Lockseed is available, which resembles a normal Lockseed, for those unable to purchase a DX Kachidoki Lockseed.
  • Kiwami Lockseed (極(キワミ)ロックシード, Kiwami Rokkushīdo, lit. "Extreme Lockseed"): A special Lockseed-like key that when activated on the Senyo/Gunyo Joint after it is manually attached to the Sengoku Driver allows Kamen Rider Gaim to evolve his Kachidoki Arms into Kiwami Arms, granting him access to every Arms Weapon, except for the ones that are summoned via the Legend Rider Lockseeds. Its code is LS- (LS-Infinity). "Watermelon Lockseed"): Allows Kamen Rider Baron to transform into Suika Arms, a colossal mecha-like form that is capable of assuming 3 different modes and equipped with a lance while in Yoroi Mode. Its code is LS-10 and it is Class A. He obtains another one sometime before the Lockseed Collecting Christmas Game.
    • A Donguri Lockseed was modified by Oren Pierre Alfonzo, bearing his likeness inside. This has since been revised to only show the closed version. Due to it featuring some holes where screws would be present on the toys, it may be an unfinished prop that was shown by mistake. Legend Rider Lockseeds

Heisei Rider Lockseeds

Listed as movie sets in some sources, the Legend Rider Lockseeds (レジェンドライダーロックシード, Rejendo Raidā Rokkushīdo) contain the power of a Kamen Rider that they are based on. The first set contains the Double and Wizard Lockseeds, while the second set includes the OOO and Fourze Lockseeds. The Arms of these Lockseeds are based off of the Rider it is based on, but doesn't exactly offer much of that form's abilities.

Like normal Lockseeds they contain images when opened, the inside image depicts the Rider's Transformation Belt while the image on the backside of the lid usually depicts the item which is inserted to commence transformation, or something else related to the Rider, denoting them as the ingredients that make the represented Rider.

These new armors for the Riders appeared in the Movie War film, Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Gaim & Wizard: The Fateful Sengoku Movie Battle. These sets were released in December.

Legend Rider Lockseeds later appear in Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai where they are used by the villainous Kamen Rider Fifteen.

In the Movie War, the Legend Rider Lockseeds were created with the fusion between the transformation items belonging to four of the most recently defeated Bujin Riders (Joker Memory, Taka Medal, Rocket Switch, Flame Ring) and Helheim Fruit. In Kamen Rider Taisen, the Heisei Riders and Showa Riders are turned into Lockseeds when they are defeated, transported to the Badan Empire's lair before they are freed by ZX and Gaim.

When transforming into these Rider Arms, it may also change the user's personality into those of the Rider's. Kamen Rider Zangetsu almost lost grip of his personality while in Fourze Arms.

Behind the scenes

Portrayal

The voice of the Lockseeds, as well as the Sengoku DriverMusou Saber and DJ Gun, is provided by Seiji Hiratoko (平床 政治, Hiratoko Seiji). The Energy Lockseeds, as well as the Genesis Driver and the Sonic Arrow, is provided by Shin-ichiro Miki (三木 眞一郎, Miki Shinichirō).

Conception

An interview with Kamen Rider Gaim producer Naomi Takebe in Hyper Hobby revealed the inspiration for the Lockseeds arising in early design meetings, with the sentences “Opening a new world” and “Unlocking potential” in mind. After some research it was decided that locks were the best choice, being something that has never been used in Kamen Rider. This decision was made at a very early point, with Takabe noting that they had no idea what the story was even going to be like then. [1]

Notes

  • A few of the Lockseeds use the Japanese names for their respective plant or fruit, rather than the English names.
  • Seeing how all Lockseeds work the same way in what is essentially the same Belt, it can be assumed that Riders can use the Lockseeds of others, in an extension of the last two series's practice of allowing the main character to use the collectible devices of the secondary Rider in one form or another. This is confirmed in that the Suika Lockseed used by Gaim was originally intended to be used by Zangetsu and demonstrated when Gaim uses the Banana Lockseed normally used by Baron in episode 13.
    • Presumably, the second Lockseed-using Driver, the Genesis Driver, can be used in a similar way with Riders exchanging Arms.
  • The zipper-like dimensional rips Lockseeds create resemble the powers of Bruno Buccellati's Stand, Sticky Fingers, from the manga JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part V: Vento Aureo.
  • The Lockseeds have some similarities to both the Gaia Memories from Kamen Rider W (triggering the transformation causes them to say the Lock's name before insertion into the Driver and, in the toy version, contain most of the sounds instead of the Belt) and the Astroswitches from Kamen Rider Fourze (the Armored Riders are given a weapon once they activate the Lockseed). They are also an homage to the Poké Balls from Pokémon, as they summon Inves to fight against other Inves.
    • Like the Astroswitches, Lockseeds seem to have limitations in how many times they can be used and must recharge after heavy use. This is first seen after Kouta used his Suika Lockseed for the first time. When Mitsuzane held the Lockseed in the next episode, it was no longer functional until it fully recharged. This process is similar to the KyoryugersIcon-crosswiki' ZyudenchiIcon-crosswiki, as they need to be recharged sometime after each use.
  • The temptation to eat a premature Lockseed as shown with Yuya Sumii (Byakko Inves), the maintenence worker, and Ryoji Hase (Hekija Inves) is similar to the biblical motif of the Temptation of Eve, where Eve was tempted to eat the fruit from the Forbidden Tree of the Garden of Eden, although she was tricked by a serpent, leading to her expulsion from the Garden whereas premature Lockseeds seem to lure in victims to eat them unless they were submerged in water or the victim has bonded to a Driver.
    • In the lyrics of Just Live More, just before the chorus hits, there is the line "forbidden fruit" (禁断の果実, Kindan no Kajitsu), furthering the motif.
    • Later episodes in Kamen Rider Gaim also allude to the motif.
      • In Episode 23, a conversation held between The Mysterious Girl and DJ Sagara ends with DJ Sagara asking who will attain the forbidden fruit.
      • In Episode 24, DJ Sagara is later shown to be serving as a personification of the serpent in the series, in which he takes the form of a Snake while talking to Demushu and Redyue.
      • In Episode 28, DJ Sagara also entices the other three New Generation Riders into seeking the forbidden fruit (sans Duke, who was already enthralled by the idea alone and aware of its existence); as a result, he successfully convinces Sid to seek the forbidden fruit by the end of the episode to the point of betrayal.
  • The Suika Lockseed is the only known natural Lockseed whose Arms Weapon changes between users.
  • With the release of the DX Kachidoki Lockseed, a preview for Kiwami Arms can be revealed if one uses an item small enough to press the button inside the keyhole of the DX Kachidoki Lockseed. However, the full effect won't be revealed until the DX Kiwami Lockseed is released.
  • In the toyline, Energy Lockseeds can be used on the Sengoku Driver without the need of the Genesis Core, by simply cutting it like a normal Lockseed.
    • Anyway, the reason that Energy Lockseeds can't be used in the series is because it'll automatically eject from Sengoku Driver.
  • The style of transformation announcements for each Rider's set of Lockseeds follow some type of pattern.
    • Gaim & Kurokage: Mix of Japanese words and English words.
    • Zangetsu: Pure Japanese.
    • Baron & Gridon: Pure English that is sung.
    • Ryugen: Either divided into three parts or ends with "Ha-Ha-Ha".
    • Bravo & Knuckle: Pure English that begins with the word "Mister".

Non-shown sounds

  • Lockseed: "You Lose..." "Rank Up!"
  • Energy Lockseed: "Energy Standby.", "Energy Shutdown.", "System Start."
  • Legend Rider Lockseed: "Legend Rider Battle Start!" "(Rider) win!", "Try again!".,"(Rider) Power" with can be activated by pull a trigger of Musou Saber after perform "Rider Charge."
