Kumo Augment-01 (クモオーグ, Kumo Ōgu, Kumo-Aug)[1] is a Non-human Infused Augment (人外融合型オーグメント, Jingai yūgō-gata Ōgumento) and a high-ranking executive of Shocker whose role is to terminate anyone that attempts to leave the organization. His real name before joining Shocker was Masa (マサ).
History
Past
Prior to joining the organization, Masa was a college student who was in a romantic relationship with a fellow student named Kousuke. They had a happy and loving relationship, until the day some of Masa's schoolmates would out Kousuke to expose his sexuality without his permission. This would cause Kousuke to commit suicide, an event that would leave a void in Masa's heart that would soon be filled with both his hatred of humanity and his own self-loathing. Consumed by his pain, Masa would burn his face out of shame in an act of deliberate self-harm as a reminder for letting his lover take his own life. Later in life, he would be found by Ivan Tawanovitch and was offered a chance to become something other than the race which he had grown to hate.

After joining the organization under the codename of Kumo (クモ), Masa would receive cybernetic augmentations in addition to a custom-made mask to hide his hideously deformed face, with his responsibility being a "cleaner" whose job was to weed out the corruption within the organization. Kumo was assigned alongside Sasori as a teammate for a new recruit: A young boy named Ichiro who had lost his mother in a random killing. Despite coldly rejecting Ichiro's greeting and expressing annoyance at Sasori for teaching the new recruit obscene words in English (And even going as far to try and choke her to death during sparring, an act that she very much enjoyed), Kumo would express his desire to clean up the corruption within the organization and would accompany Sasori on a mission to infiltrate an outpost that had been seized by the founding faction by using special sportswear and Shocker-made spider drones. After Professor Hiroshi Midorikawa and Ichiro's confrontation with Clark, one of the organization's higher-ranking members, Kumo would make his entrance by using a specialized rocket launcher to web up the military drones surrounding Ichiro and applauding him for his conviction. However, Clark would break the Shocker Agent's mask, revealing his burnt face . Just as he was about to be finished off, Ichiro would collide with the cyborg using one of the military drones, thus giving Kumo the opportunity to finish him off.

After Ichiro received an augmentation surgery to save his life, Kumo was surprised at the young boy's sudden improvement in his physical capabilities. Accepting the child's offer to go outside, he would explain to Ichiro in the nearby forest that he likes to come out to feed a bird from time to time, and would take off his mask to both show the future executive his full face and explain the reason behind it. He would tell Ichiro that while he had not forgiven humanity for its sins, children like him were still innocent and must be kept safe. As a show of gratitude for saving his life, Kumo would offer to train Ichiro and let him become strong enough in both body and mind to survive within the organization. Afterwards, he would ask Professor Midorikawa about the reason behind Ichiro's rapidly improving physical prowess, and would then warn the scientist that he should not try to toy with forces that he doesn't fully understand. He would later disappear, taking an absence from training to undergo an Augmentation Surgery that would permanently transform him into a full-fledged Inhuman Synthetic Augment and awakening as Kumo Augment-01.
After awakening and being dispatched to assist Ichiro and Sasori, Kumo-Aug would stand there, not caring and saying that he would lose. In a gambit, Sasori would throw a Guardian at him, which would cause him to experience a traumatic flashback of his past. He once again saw the reason why he had thrown aside his humanity and became who he is today: the ugliness of human society, and his own cowardly attitude, that had caused Kousuke to take his own life. This causes Kumo to embrace his monstrous side, going on a rampage and destroying the guardians. However, despite his claims of retaining his sanity, he had clearly undergone a change for the worse, and even went as far as using his extra limbs to sever Sasori's left arm. However, Ichiro's prana allowed him to read Kumo's memories as he fought to protect the person Kumo had injured and called him by his human name. Kumo-Aug, enraged by this, would try to attack Ichiro, only for the boy to respond with a hug that brought him back to his senses.
Shin Kamen Rider
By the time of the main film, Kumo-Aug would be given a new suit and was tasked by Ichiro to hunt down a newly created Augment that had escaped and retrieved Ruriko Midorikawa. After tailing the traitors in a truck, he would set off the explosive spider drones that he had attached to a pile of buses blocking their path, sending them over the ledge. He would then introduce his job to one of the escapees, explaining to her that the organization had wanted her alive and that he would simply punish her to ensure that she can never try running away again. Just as he was about to gouge Ruriko's eyes out with his thumbs, the newly revealed Batta Augment-01 would intervene and would proceed to brutally slaughter Kumo-Aug's subordinates in an act of violent self-preservation. While the grasshopper cyborg was busy with brutalizing the combatants, Kumo-Aug would make his escape, but not before planting some tracking devices onto Ruriko's body.
Once Takeshi Hongo had managed to find a safe place to escape to and learn more about what had happened to his body, Kumo-Aug would activate his spider drones, knocking Ruriko unconscious before dropping into the safehouse that Professor Midorikawa had arranged to rendezvous with Hongo in and webbing the grasshopper augment to the nearby wall. Midorikawa would tell Kumo-Aug to kill him, out of guilt for the things he had done during his time at SHOCKER, to which the spider cyborg would gladly oblige. Revealing two of his extra arms, he would strangle the scientist and sap away his Prana, killing him. Kumo-Aug would then retrieve Ruriko, plant a bomb on the floor of the safehouse and then make his escape, but not before admonishing Hongo for returning to his human form.

On his way back to the organization, Kumo Augment-01 would be stopped by Hongo, who had used the wind to transform back into his Augment form. Kumo would commend the Grasshopper Augment for his resilience, calling him by his designation. However, Hongo would reply, albeit with hesitation, that he wanted Kumo to address him by a new name: Kamen Rider. Kumo Augment-01 would tell the Rider that this was not a privilege that traitors would get, and though he regretted having to kill a fellow Augment, he knew that grasshoppers had been sign of disaster throughout history and that he would have to eliminate those who interfered with the organization's goals. Kumo-Aug would then have his Low-Class Members engage the Kamen Rider in combat, only for the combatants to be reduced to fleshy puddles of blood and viscera from the sheer force of the first Batta Augment's attacks. Left to his own devices, Kumo would engage in combat with the Kamen Rider, explaining his goals to him as well as his means of happiness. As the two would take their fight to the top of the dam, Kumo-Aug would dodge the Rider's attacks, commending him for his combat prowess and how they now both share the experience of feeling happiness of killing a human. The Kamen Rider, disagreeing with Kumo, would throw off his trenchcoat and use it to temporarily blind the Spider Augment before punching him in the mask. Disappointed for not seeing eye to eye with him, Kumo-Aug would use his web as a zipline to a lower area of the dam, pinning the Kamen Rider in place with all 6 of his arms and asking him why he doesn't understand the happiness of not being human. However, he would soon meet his end thanks to being launched into the air, with the G-Force launching the spider cyborg off of Hongo and leaving him suspended midair. Unable to do anything, Kumo Augment-01 could only curse his fate before recieving a Rider Kick to the chest and being driven into the wall of the dam, meeting his end and dissolving away into foam.
Personality
Before being made into an Inhuman Fusion-Type Augment, Kumo was presented as an honest but blunt individual who speaks politely, to contrast with Sasori's more casual and unrestrained attitude. He is aloof, detached from humanity due to his hatred of humans, and is annoyed by Sasori's constant teasing remarks. However, he is still capable of showing respect and gratitude for those who have been kind to him, and especially had a sense of patience and respect for the young Ichiro Midorikawa. Despite his hatred of both himself and mankind which drives him apart from human society, Kumo still respected children and wishes for them to be kept safe due to their innocence. After undergoing the Augmentation Surgery which freed him from his humanity, however, Kumo is shown to have become noticeably colder, though he was still willing to listen to a younger Ruriko Midorikawa and was able to be reasoned with when Ichiro calmed him down during his rampage. He had also become more quick to anger, his usual annoyance from being teased by Sasori having changed into a desire to kill her. The loss of his virtues become more apparent in the main story itself, where he had no problem with gladly murdering Professor Midorikawa and was willing to attempt to gouge out Ruriko's eyes for betraying the organization. Despite retaining his formal mannerisms by the events of the movie, Kumo had also become more of a fanatic, explaining that he kills humans with his own hands in the name of other Augments who have abandoned their humanity, and expressing genuine frustration and confusion at the Kamen Rider for not embracing his new abilites. However, there was still implied to be some virtue left in his heart, as he feels a kinship with other Augments and expressed regret in having to eliminate a fellow Augment.

Kumo Augment-01 is a Non-human Infused Augment of a spider and a human. He possesses both incredible strength, durability and agility, which he takes advantage of thanks to his fighting style which is mainly based around acrobatics and strategy. His strategic mindset, high-tech arsenal, as well as his own spider-like abilities, make Kumo-Aug a force to be reckoned with.
- Abilities
- Extra Limb Manifestation: Kumo Augment-01 has two additional pairs of arms (Two behind his shoulders and two on the sides of his abdomen) stored away in his torso that he reveals by opening the zippers on his vest. His arms are strong enough to keep even the stronger Augments such as Batta Augment-01 pinned in place, and are even capable of sapping away prana from other living creatures.
- Webbing Generation: Kumo Augment-01 can fire webs from the mouthpiece of his mask to either form nets that can ensnare his foes or threads that he can either use as a climbing rope or as a zipline for transport purposes. The webbing cannot be broken by an ordinary human being, as Takeshi Hongo was unable to break free after being plastered to a wall by it.
- Multipurpose Spider Drones: Kumo Augment-01 possesses an army of small spider drones made by Shocker that have a variety of purposes. The drones have built-in cameras that connect to the HUD in Kumo Augment-01's mask for surveillance, can stay attached to a target completely undetected, and some even have built-in explosive charges that can be detonated.

Kumo Augment-01 is portrayed by suit actor Hayate Kashiwazaki (柏崎 隼風, Kashiwazaki Hayate) and voiced by Nao Ōmori (大森 南朋, Ōmori Nao).
Notes
- In one piece of early concept art, Kumo Augment-01 is wearing a Nazi-styled coat. Other scrapped designs included an appearance that incorporated a more monstrous and grotesque design that leaned more into the mutation aspect similar to the classic Shocker Monsters, as well as a helmet that looked more similar to his 2005 counterpart Spider.
- In the English subtitles for the Amazon Prime release, Kumo-Aug is referred to as an "Evil-Infused Augment".
- While other Augment's voice will be muffled when using their helmet, Kumo-Aug's voice is mechanized.
- The first conception of Anno Hideaki's re-imagination of the original Man Spider was actually dated back in 1983, in the unproduced Daicon Film's Kamen Rider.[2]
