- "Neon is my daughter... And I will protect her! (祢音は... 娘は私が守る!, Neon wa... Musume wa Watashi ga Mamoru!)"
- ―Kousei words before transforming into Gya-Go.[src]
Kousei Kurama (鞍馬 光聖, Kurama Kōsei) is the CEO of the Kurama Conglomerate and a sponsor for the Desire Grand Prix. He temporarily entered Ace Ukiyo's Desire Grand Prix as Kamen Rider Gya-Go (仮面ライダーギャーゴ, Kamen Raidā Gyāgo) to protect his daughter Neon, before transferring his entry and the Fantasy Buckle to her.
History
Background
Kousei Kurama is the head of the Kurama Conglomerate and a sponsor of the Desire Grand Prix. At some point, Kousei Kurama married Irumi Kurama and had a daughter, Akari. One day, during Akari's birthday, she was abducted by Kazuo Numabukuro for a ¥300,000,000 ransom. Unfortunately, Akari died in the process and a desperate Kousei decided to become a sponsor to the DGP, in exchange for making a deal with Niramu to have a wish of his granted. Unable to live with the prospect of knowing that his daughter died once, Kousei chose not to wish for his daughter's revival, but instead wished for an idealized version of his daughter named Neon as a means to further his company.
Conspiracy Arc
While the third current game of the Desire Grand Prix was already underway, Kousei interrupted a conversation between his wife and daughter about an arranged marriage for the latter, questioning Neon if that was what she truly wanted for her life. He then invited Tsumuri, who gave Neon a Desire Driver along with the Beat Buckle, allowing Neon to re-join the game midway through.
Later, Neon used her father's connections with the Desire Grand Prix to file a complaint with Niramu, leading to Girori being fired from his position as Game Master.
Divergence & Lamentation Arcs
With the DGP participants learning about the truth behind the DGP being a reality show, Kousei would be seen much more frequently in the audience areas as he observed the tournament's progress. When his wife found out about his involvement in their daughter being a Kamen Rider, Kousei was quick to dismiss her concerns regarding Neon's safety, leaving his wife embittered.
Later, as the Jyamato's rampage continued to increase with the Jyamato Grand Prix's hijack, Kousei demanded Niramu for a solution as he was reaching his own limit in holding off the police and relevant authorities. As he questioned the prospect of Niramu doing a clean reset on the world, Niramu in turn called him out on being unable to grant his daughter's own wish by himself, prompting a furious reaction from him.
On the day of Neon's birthday, and by extension Akari's, Kousei had a brief meeting with Kyuun, before heading to the site of his daughter's kidnapping, placing flowers to pay respects to his original deceased daughter. While there, he encountered Ace, who was there to find out more about Neon's past. In a bid to stop Ace from snooping any further, Kousei threatened to use his sponsor powers to revoke Ace's participation rights in the DGP if the latter continued to ask any more questions.
Kousei was present in the DGP audience area when Beroba exposed the truth of Neon's origins to the entire audience, including the information of Akari's death. When an angered Kyuun confronted Kousei regarding the truth, Kousei merely laughed in despair, and callously demanded the supporter to pamper Neon all for the sake of the Kurama Conglomerate. Disappointed by Kousei's words, Kyuun later left the room.
Genesis Arc
Personality
As the patriarch of the Kurama household who is also a sponsor of the Desire Grand Prix, Kousei exudes a very shady demeanor on the outside. In contrast with his wife's over-protectiveness over their daughter, Kousei has no qualms allowing Neon to be free, even setting up her constant participation in the Desire Grand Prix. However, it is also later revealed that this is also partially motivated by his own ulterior motives.
Being the sole remaining Kurama family member who remembers the truth surrounding his daughter's origins, Kousei remains deeply traumatized as a result of those circumstances even after many years. He is continuously unable to show true love towards his "replacement" daughter, only seeing her as a means to an end to further the Kurama Conglomerate's goals of establishing connections with the people of the future.
Furthermore, despite his usual composed demeanor, he becomes extremely emotional upon the subject of his daughter's existence, reacting with desperation at the possible prospect of Niramu resetting their present world for good, and threatening to use his own powers as a sponsor to revoke Ace Ukiyo's participation rights as a Rider to deter him from investigating any further into the Kuramas' tragic past. When the truth is finally exposed in the open, Kousei's usual demeanor completely cracks and breaks down, revealing a deeply broken individual who has nothing left in his heart, except for his company and his ideals.
Thankfully, after Neon repeated attempts to connect with him, along with some encouragement from Irumi, Kousei finally realized his wrongs and strove to become a better father. Now able to fully accept Neon as his own daughter, Kousei swallowed his ego and knelt in front of Ace for power to give her happiness. After transforming into Gya-Go, Kousei did not hesitate to fight Kazuo Numabukuro, the same man who kidnapped and killed his original daughter 11 years ago.

He would later repeatedly demand Kousei to treat his daughter with proper affection, becoming increasingly angry with each request.

Behind the Scenes
Portrayal
Kousei Kurama is portrayed by Shinji Kasahara (笠原 紳司, Kasahara Shinji), who previously portrayed Naoto Takizawa/TimeFire in Mirai Sentai Timeranger and Fujio in Kamen Rider Amazons Season 2. As Kamen Rider Gya-Go, his suit actor is Yuya Nawata (縄田 雄哉, Nawata Yūya). He is one of only a few actors who have starred in both the Kamen Rider and Super Sentai Series.
Etymology
Kousei literally means the "Saint of Light", referring to his role as the father of both Akari and Neon, whose names are different types of light.
The first part of Gya-Go's name comes from a Japanese onomatopoeia for a scream, "gyā" (ぎゃ ). Like his daughter, Na-Go, the latter part of his name is derived from the Japanese word for cat, "neko" (猫 ). Gya-Go's name could also come from a Japanese onomatopoeia for a roaring sound, Gao (ガオ).
Notes
- In the end notice after Episode 42's release, Kamen Rider Gya-Go was initally labelled as a "Golden Wildcat Rider"[4]
- Kamen Rider Gya-Go's helmet (including Fantasy Form's mouthpiece) is retooled from Kamen Rider Seeker. Fantasy Form's armor is retooled from Kamen Rider Brave Taddle Fantasy. A vertical seam was added to the chest armor to simulate how the chest armor of other Geats Riders can split in half for Revolve On.
- Kousei's transformation pose was influenced by TimeFire, a role his actor previously portrayed.[5]
- Shinji Kasahara later stated on Twitter that he developed Gya-Go's transformation pose from using Na-Go's as a base, and was also partially inspired by the poses of Toei's version of Spider-Man.[6] He had seen Toei's Spider-Man series as a kid, and had watched a clip of Spider-Man's roll call several times in order to recreate a similar feeling in Gya-Go's pose.[7]
- Initially, Gya-Go Armed Shield broke the visual uniformity of Geats Riders' Armed forms. Usually, the eyes are yellow and and the bottom half of the face is blank. However, due to the head originally being designed for Seeker's Powered Builder Form, the color of the eyes could not be changed and the mouth section could not be removed. Therefore, Gya-Go Armed Shield's eyes were still red and he retained the lower face.[8] Later, the suit was corrected to be in line with the other Riders.[9]
- As the revision was only made during later productions of Kamen Rider Geats: Final Stage, Gya-Go's Entry Form is CGI when it is briefly seen during his transformation sequence in the series. As a result, it is not listed on TV Asahi website unlike the other Riders.
- For some reason, both the SO-DO and Revolve Change releases of Gya-Go omit the "eyeshadow" on his helmet
