Kento Fukamiya (富加宮 賢人, Fukamiya Kento) is a 24-year-old[1](32 as of Trio of Deep Sin) former member of the Sword of Logos who wielded the Raimeiken Ikazuchi and transformed into Kamen Rider Espada (仮面ライダーエスパーダ, Kamen Raidā Esupāda) before he was sealed away by the Ankokuken Kurayami's dark power. Being forced to bear witness to multiple timelines all leading to the world's destruction, he inherited the power of Kurayami, re-emerging from the darkness as the third Kamen Rider Calibur (仮面ライダーカリバー, Kamen Raidā Karibā) in order to seal all the Seiken away and save the world on his own. Upon reuniting with his father, Kento took up Ikazuchi once again as Espada.

History

Background

Kento Fukamiya was born to Hayato Fukamiya, a swordsman of the Sword of Logos. During his childhood, Kento became close friends with Touma Kamiyama and Luna, both of whom he became separated with during the War of Wonder World 15 years ago. Kento faced the worst moment of his life; seeing Kamen Rider Calibur, his father, had betrayed the Sword of Logos. Since then, Kento formally joined the Sword of Logos around the same time as Ren Akamichi, whom the latter would admire Kento greatly. From Sophia, Kento received Raimeiken Ikazuchi, becoming the current Thunder Swordsman, Kamen Rider Espada.

Reuniting with Touma Kamiyama

After Touma and Rintaro defeated both the Ant and Kirigirisu Megid, Kento arrived at the Fantastic Bookstore Kamiyama atop his magic carpet. He then greets his childhood friend Touma, though the latter has no recollection of him.

Upon reuniting with Touma, Kento realizes that there are several things that Touma has forgotten; while he initially could not remember, Touma was able to remember a certain time with Kento. When Touma and Rintaro were attacked by Kamen Rider Calibur after their battle against the Hanzaki Megid, Kento suddenly appears as Espada, blocking the latter's Kurayami slash before escaping.

Kento as Espada fighting his "father", Calibur

During a second encounter with Kamen Rider Calibur, Kento went to confront him as Espada. As he believed his father was under the suit, Kento demanded answers on why he betrayed the Sword of Logos, much to zero response. As he was about to be pummeled by Calibur, he was rescued by Buster.

Although Touma tried to figure out his lost childhood memories, Kento deliberately kept Touma in the dark by avoiding taking about their past and Luna due to him reeling from the guilt that his father was the reason why he lost both his friends.

When both Rintaro and Touma were able to achieve their Wonder Combo forms, Kento was greeted by Reika Shindai, a messenger from the Southern Base, who gifted him the Tri Cerberus Wonder Ride Book. He later formed a pact with Touma and Rintaro to stick to each other through the end. The three worked together to fight Calibur in their Wonder Combo forms. However, Kento had the biggest shock of his life that the Calibur they were fighting all this time was none other than Daichi Kamijo, the previous Saber.

The revelation that Daichi Kamijo was the current Calibur tore Kento apart emotionally. Although Rintaro warned him that vengeance wasn't the answer, he refused to listen to his comrades' words. When he saw Kamijo and Sophia speaking to each other, Kento irrationally thought the Sword of Logos did something to his father, which Rintaro tried to assure him wasn't true. When Kento tried to fight Kamijo, who had just received his new form, Jaoh Dragon, he would've been killed if it wasn't for Rintaro shielding him from his attack.

After Rintaro was recuperating back to the Northern Base, he lamented the fact that he failed both Touma and Luna, before leaving to confront Kamijo once and for all. Unbeknownst to Kento, Rintaro was listening while he was resting. As he attempted to settle things with Daichi Kamijo, Kento was no match against Calibur Jaou Dragon and is defeated by his opponent. During their duel, Daichi claimed that Kento's father was indeed a traitor and was killed by him, although he did not reveal why he had the Ankokuken Kurayami with him. By the time Touma fully regained his memories and rushed to his childhood friend's side, Kento fell unconscious in the former's arms.

Kento's "death".

Even after Touma acquired the power of Dragonic Knight and defeated Calibur Jaou Dragon, Kento was still left dying due to protecting his friends from Calibur's attack from earlier. Eventually, while surrounded by his fellow swordsmen, his body disappeared into dark miasma while his soul got sealed into the Ankokuken Kurayami.

Trapped within Darkness

Kento free from his imprisonment in Ankokuken Kurayami

When he was trapped in the World of Darkness inside the Ankokuken Kurayami, Kento was forced to live through several timelines where the Seiken coming together resulted in the destruction of the world. This ultimately broke him as he repeatedly foresaw the same outcome, and he became determined to seal away all the Seiken to prevent the world's destruction. Kento would break free from his seal and became the new Kamen Rider Calibur, inheriting his father's power and sword.

Crusade to Seal Every Seiken

Saikou and Calibur stopping Saber Primitive Dragon.

When Saber Primitive Dragon went berserk, Kento arrived as Calibur to prevent his friend from rampaging before immediately taking his leave.

Kento's return.

When Sabela stormed the Northern Base, Touma went berserk again and Kento appeared a second time to protect Rintaro from the berserk Saber, but the shockwave of the Crash Hissatsu Geki canceled both of their transformations, with his identity finally revealed to his former fellow swordsmen. Instead of a happy reunion, Kento revealed his intent to save the world by sealing away all the Seikens and declared that he was the only one to protect the world from danger, before teleporting away.

He would later be confronted by both Yuri and Reika Shindai, having foresaw the battle's outcome before it even began. Touma, Mei, Ryo, and Tetsuo eventually managed to catch up to them. After telling Touma that he never forgot about their promise with Luna, he would then disclose to everyone about his time in the World of Darkness, where he became determined to carry out his mission, disregarding any alternate approaches. Kento then told Touma that he would go berserk again, but no one will be hurt. Kento then proceeded to defeat Tetsuo and seal the Onjuuken Suzune, before going for Ryo's Dogouken Gekido next. When Touma attempted to stop him in a fit of despair before Primitive Dragon took over, Kento took his leave once more. After leaving, Touma didn't go berserk for long and his transformation abruptly cancelled due to his sadness, showing how correct Kento's newfound foresight was.

The next day, Kento witnessed Legeiel Forbidden fighting the rampaging Saber Primitive Dragon, giving trouble to Yuri and Ryo. Kento foresaw that Touma would have his transformation cancelled soon, so he chose to not participate in the battle. However, Kento was surprised by a sudden change of events that Kurayami had failed to predict; while Touma did stop rampaging, his transformation was not cancelled and remained immobile. After Buster, Saikou, and Blades held Legeiel back, Kento witnessed the advent of Saber Primitive Elemental Dragon and the latter's victory over the unstable Legeiel. Even though the battle had ended, Kento remained resolute in his goal of sealing every Seiken, as he still followed Kurayami's beliefs that the world's destruction in the future was set in stone, regardless of the results.

Calibur VS Kenzan

He would later be found by Ren Akamichi, who enthusiastically asked him to fight together again. Kento, however, refused the offer and apologized to Ren as he seeks to seal Fuusouken Hayate. He succeeded in this endeavor only with one of Hayate's swords, but is then confronted by Touma again. Kento then stated to Touma that he returned from the darkness to fulfill what his father had intended to do, as he also see what his father vision is, in order to protect the world. He battles Saber Elemental Primitive Dragon, only to be defeated and then took his leave as he announces that he will fulfill his own mission, even if it will cost him his own life in return.

Changing Destiny

Calibur slashing the barrier of the room trapping Sophia.

As Rintaro and Touma face the newly arrived Durandal, Kento took the chance to rescue Sophia and returns her to the Northern Base for currently unknown reasons.

Kento and Sophia then watches from a distance while Zooous continues to overpower Rintaro. He commented that he desires for the future to be saved, and that Rintaro's death will be beneficial towards it. However, Rintaro didn't die, but instead further mastered the Suiseiken Nagare and separated Mei from the Neko Megid, catching Kento by surprise yet again as the Ankokuken Kurayami failed to predict this.

Master Logos face against Touma and Kento

Kento was found by Touma once more, who invites him for a small picnic between friends, since they had not got a chance to talk ever since the latter regained his memories. Although Touma insisted Kento they should work together once more and change the future, Kento tried to leave knowing that one of the futures Kento saw involved his friend's death. Their conversation is then shortly interrupted by Master Logos, whom Saber and Calibur would therefore engage in a battle against. Master Logos revealed that he was the one responsible for manipulating Kento's father, much to his anger. After a brief scuffle, Kento was in disbelief when Touma opened a portal to where Luna is imprisoned until now. He would then take his leave not long after that, discarding the pin Touma had given to him earlier.

Kento once again appears during the confrontation between Touma, Yuri, and Bahato, stating his intent to save the world by sealing the Seikens. Yuri tries to appeal to him about trusting Touma, to which Kento responded that he is the one who does not understand. A three-way battle ensues with Saber and Saikou against Falchion and Calibur. However, when launching a finishing blow, both Calibur and Falchion's finishers hit Yuri, causing his human body to disappear. Kento then protects Touma from Bahato's attack and proceeds to fight the Immortal Swordsman together with his friend. The battle, however, was stopped when Bahato sensed that "she" is already here. Both Touma and Kento de-transformed, before they immediately encounter Luna, who is finally free from her prison.

During Master Logos' ritual to summon the Great Book, Kento arrived and succeeded in sealing in the majority of the Seikens. However, he was intercepted by Falchion and the two engaged in a scuffle. Ren as Kenzan suddenly arrived out of nowhere and attacked them both, but Kento quickly defended Ren from Falchion's attack. This lead to Ankokuken Kurayami and his Wonder Ride Books taken by Master Logos and after gathering enough Seikens and Books, Master Logos nearly succeeded in summoning the Great Book. However, Touma was able to put a stop to the Master's machinations and destroyed the tree holding the Seikens, which returned the swords and Wonder Ride Books back to their rightful owners. Before leaving, Kento was seen standing over Raimeiken Ikazuchi and Ankokuken Kurayami, opting to take the latter as a keepsake from his father.

Although Kento would recognize Touma's efforts into changing the future, he could still see the disaster that could unfold and how Touma's sacrifice must be needed to save the world. Despite Yuri and Sophia meeting with him in order to convince him to help Touma and the others, Kento continued to refuse any help and wished to settle things alone.

Kento would then face Solomon alone as Calibur, although Rintaro and Touma come to assist him shortly after. Despite their brave attempts at fighting the evil Rider, they were forced to bear witness of the destruction to the city. Seeing no other choice, Kento decided to sacrifice his life to save the world by taking Isaac with him into the darkness. However, Touma was not willing to let his friend die and redirected Kento's attack towards the copy of the Great Book. Although Solomon attempted to perform a counterattack, Yuri arrived and successfully sealed Solomon using both Saikou and Kurayami. Touma offers Kento another chance to work together, but he declined as he grabbed Kurayami away from Yuri. But shortly before Kento leaves, a light approached him and a familiar voice said that the future can be changed.

Kento reuniting with his father after 15 years

Kento is once again approached by Touma and asks why he stopped him from sacrificing himself to seal Isaac. Touma answers that everyone is fighting to change the future and hoped Kento would do the same. Touma promises that he won't disappear and leaves behind Raimeiken Ikazuchi for him. Kento is then visited by the mysterious voice who turns out to be his father, Hayato Fukamiya, who was not dead but saved by the guardian of Wonder World and been watching his son ever since. Both father and son then share a tender moment, with Hayato apologizing for leaving Kento alone for the last 15 years. He offered an advice to Kento's dilemma, which is to follow his heart. With a new resolve in mind, he thanked his father and reclaimed Ikazuchi as his sword. Kento joined Touma and the others against Falchion and later Solomon, wielding both Ikazuchi and Ankokuken Kurayami. With all swordsmen together, Kento aided Touma in creating Haouken Xross Saber and witnessed the Solomon's defeat at the hands of Kamen Rider Xross Saber.

Kento, in his uniform, having rejoined his friends.

The following day, Kento would be approached by Touma, Rintaro, and Mei, who convinced him to join them using the play about the story of Momotaro. Kento suddenly turned around to join the play, twisting the story a bit while accepting Touma's offer in a hammy way he used to do. In the Northern Base, he wore a modified version of his old Sword of Logos uniform and welcomed back by his teammates. He would then leave the base to look for Ren, who is currently with Desast and tries to convince him to join Touma as well, but Ren refused to rejoin the team. He would later return to Fantastic Kamiyama Bookstore to see the Shindai siblings joining the team but finds himself worried about a possible future involving Storious.

Kento would later be excited upon hearing the news that Luna is in Wonder World, to which he responds he can't wait for them to reunite. When Yuri offered to go to Wonder World to save Luna, Kento handed over Kurayami to him.

He would later go with Touma and Rintaro to prevent Isaac from taking Luna again. They transformed into their Rider forms and managed to best Isaac. However, Kento and Rintaro would find themselves controlled against their will through Isaac's Omni Force Book. They managed to break the former Master Logos' control over them, causing both his and Rintaro's main Wonder Ride Books to respond to Touma, granting him Featuring Saber form. Kento would then assist Touma in controlling his new form against Isaac's offensive, which concludes in the destruction of Omni Force Book. Following this, Kento joined his Seiken with Touma and Rintaro, fulfilling their promise to stick out to each other.

Final Battle Against Storious

Despite the victory against Master Logos, Storious remained to enact his plan to destroy the world. Following the death of Tassel, the destruction of Wonder World began to affect Earth. Kento participated in minimizing the disaster, but Storious became stronger after achieving the Grimiore Wonder Ride Book and became Kamen Rider Storious. Furthermore, the Megid had ressurected the Four Sages to become his loyal followers. With the final battle approching, Touma and Kento finally reunite with Luna, who magically turned into an adult, and played at the tree where they previously played at fifteen years ago. Although Luna expressed fear about the upcoming battle, Touma assured his promise to protect the world and his friends, before Luna vanished once more.

The final battle began to approach, with Kento joining Touma, along with the rest of the swordsmen in a final march against Storious. As they stormed into the Tower of Destruction, Kento and the rest of the swordsmen covered for Touma as he reached Storious as he fought of a Lord of Wise. Although he succeeded in defeating it, the battle was too exausting for Kento, causing him to pass out and it was only Yuri's healing ability that allowed him to stand up. Kento arrived in Storious' chamber to protect Touma with Rintaro. He would bear witness to the creation of the Wonder Almighty Wonder Ride Book and the joined his allies the last battle with Kamen Rider Storious. The three Riders defeated Storious, but failed to prevent the destruction of the world. Kento and Rintaro were forced to witness Touma's death as the world disappeared around them.

One Year Later

Kento as the new owner of Fantastic Bookstore Kamiyama entertaining children by doing storytime

One year later, Kento and most of the swordsmen were restored back to normal. Kento takes Touma's place as the new owner of Fantastic Bookstore Kamiyama. Upon hearing word that the missing victims that were unaccounted for had suddenly returned, Kento joined up with most of Touma's friends as they reunited with their missing friend once more.

Following the reunion, Kento and Touma would visit the tree where they used to play with Luna, reminiscing about the past. However, they are immediately distracted by the arrival of a new enemy. Later on, Kento would go to Touma's bookstore following the latter's retirement as Saber, where he brought kids to play with them, as well as Rintaro and Mei.

Other Events

Kamen Rider Saber: The Phoenix Swordsman and the Book of Ruin

When the Immortal Swordman, Bahato, declared his intent to destroy the world using the Book of Ruin, Kento joined with the rest of the Northern Base swordsmen to challenge him. Kamen Rider Espada engaged the horde of Shimi as Saber fought Falchion personally. Kento, intent on fighting to atone humanity's mistakes, wiped out the rest of the Shimi army with his fellow Swordsmen before Falchion sealed away by Saber.

Personality

While Kento seems kind and quiet on the outside, he is a heroic man who cares for the welfare, lives, and safety of other innocent people. However, underneath all this is someone who often fights against his own inner conflicts within himself, which is presented as his greatest flaw. He is unable to be open with them, always attempting to resolve them on his own. This is shown when he recklessly fights Daichi Kamijo to find out why his father betrayed the guild, although this made him a candidate for Ankokuken Kurayami's corruption. As such, Kento often blames himself for the events that were clearly out of his control, such as Luna's disappearance and Touma's memory loss. This tendency would change after a heart-to-heart with his father, who advises him to trust in his friends and don't solve anything on his own.

As the third Calibur, Kento has become cold and bitter as a result of his time trapped inside Ankokuken Kurayami, which forced him to experience multiple futures regarding the world's destruction. As a result, he became determined to carry out his mission to save the world from its dark future. Carrying over from before his breakdown, Kento remains stubborn and adamant that the future cannot change. However since being proven wrong by Touma on many occasions, Kento has changed his viewpoints regarding changing the future. Unfortunately, Kento's breakdown from Kurayami lead him to fear and keeps on doubting Touma's capability to break the prediction of the sword despite Yuri's warning to not completely depending on the sword. This is proven further after Isaac had retrieved Omni Force, Kento was seen to smile and hope that the future was able to be changed, only to terrify Kento again when he viewed the same horrible future. At the same time, he believes that by acting alone in his resistance against the Southern Base, he can protect his former friends.

Despite voicing his disinterest in rejoining them, he has shown some implication regarding the opposite such as recusing Sophia and smiling at Mei's homemade pin of him. He briefly considered picking up Ikazuchi before ultimately choosing Kurayami in Episode 35, with his actor Ryo Aoki stating that the reason was because Kento's own worthiness of wielding Ikazuchi was overtaken by his familial attachment to Kurayami, a keepsake of his late father.[2] This would later change after meeting his revived father, who reaffirmed his faith in his friends, allowing him to regain his confidence to reclaim Ikazuchi and return to being the heroic swordsman he once was.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

  • Portal Creation: As Calibur, Kento can summon portals to travel between locations. This also allows him to travels in and out the place protected by Book Gate, such as where Sophia is held captive in Southern Base.
  • Seiken Sealing: Using the Ankokuken Kurayami, Kento can seal other Seiken. This was first demonstrated when he sealed Onjuuken Suzune. As the sword had sealed him away once, it is possible that Kento can seal humans away as well.
  • Precognition: Due to wielding the Ankokuken Kurayami, Kento can see visions of possible futures. This was first shown when he learned that uniting all of the Seiken would destroy the world while was trapped within the sword. He was also able to foresee his fight against Yuri and Touma. However, as these are simply collections of possible futures, his predictions can be (but can't always be) averted and is not always accurate, such as when Touma obtained the Elemental Dragon Wonder Ride Book, and when Rintaro tapped into the full potential of his Seiken. After giving up Kurayami, Kento will still receive visions to a certain extent, though not enough to disturb his quality of life.

Abilities

  • Expert Swordsman: As a former member of the Sword of Logos, Kento is a trained swordsman, demonstrating his mastery at using Raimeiken Ikazuchi and later Ankokuken Kurayami when fighting his enemies or opponents.
  • Power Strain Resistance: Unlike Touma and Rintaro, Kento did not suffer from any visible power strain immediately after using Golden Alangina.

  • Luna: Kento's childhood friend. She was prepared to be sacrificed by Kento's corrupted father as the key to connect both Earth and Wonder World before she was trapped in the other world due to Touma being unable to save her.
  • Touma Kamiyama's team:
    • Mei Sudo: Seeing that Rintaro was injured because of him, she criticizes his actions. Unlike Touma, Kento casually calls her Mei
    • Sophia: Kento's mentor and mystic of the Sword of Logos. After seeing Sophia along with Daichi, however, Kento misinterpreted things, thinking that he had to do with the disappearance of his father. He is the one who rescued her from the Southern Base. After Kento admitted he wanted to believe in Touma, Sophia appeared and helped him remove any hesitation in doing so.
    • Touma Kamiyama/Kamen Rider Saber (II): Kento and Touma are childhood friends. According to Kento, a huge chunk of Touma's memories regarding Wonder World are missing. Yet despite that, Touma still cares and looks out for him as his friend. Touma little by little begins to recover part of his memories, remembering his time with Kento and Luna. After he returned as Calibur, Kento is influenced by the visions of the future shown by the Ankokuken Kurayami, becoming much more distant towards Touma in the process. However, he's still willing to explain his reasoning to Touma, and didn't forget about their promise to be together again with Luna. As a sign that he still care for Touma and the others, in one moment he told Touma that Primitive Dragon wouldn't hurt anyone which really happen. He would later be able to trust Touma again after a heart-to-heart with Hayato, becoming his true ally once again.
    • Rintaro Shindo/Kamen Rider Blades: After seeing that Kento was desperate to find out what happened to his father and wanting to find Daichi for answers, Rintaro wants to stop him from doing something crazy, telling him that the Sword of Logos are family and should not act that way. Rintaro also sacrifices himself to save him from Daichi's attack, being seriously injured by that action. When seeing Kento was alive and was the new Calibur, Rintaro was surprised.
    • Ryo Ogami/Kamen Rider Buster (II): Kento and Ryo prove to have a close relationship due to the fact that Ryo was friends with his father. Although he still respects him following his defection, Kento is much more willing to hurt him and Tetsuo if it means saving the world.
    • Ren Akamichi/Kamen Rider Kenzan (II): Fellow member of the Sword of Logos until Ren's defection to the southern base. Ren is surprised and overjoyed to find out that Kento was alive but is the new Calibur. Before Kento succeed on sealing his Seiken (only sealing one of the blades), Kento told him that he was sorry about it.
    • Tetsuo Daishinji/Kamen Rider Slash: Mechanic and fellow member of the Sword of Logos until Kento's defection. Although he still respects him, Kento is much more willing to hurt him and Ryo if it means saving the world. After Onjuuken was sealed, Kento didn't attack Tetsuo.
    • Yuri/Kamen Rider Saikou: Upon meeting Yuri, he decides to face Kento because Touma and the other swordsmen had doubt to face him, due to the relationship they share, except for him.
    • Hayato Fukamiya/Kamen Rider Calibur (I): Kento's father, who was believed to have betrayed the Sword of Logos which is confirmed by Daichi himself after the latter did kill him as he noticed that the Sword of Logos was the one who made Hayato corrupted and for him wanting to sacrifice Luna. Kento would later find himself trusting him again after a heart-to-heart with him.
    • Reika Shindai/Kamen Rider Sabela: Reika is in charge of helping Kento in his fight against Calibur.[9] However, upon his return as Calibur, Reika sees him as an enemy.
    • Ryoga Shindai/Kamen Rider Durendal: Due to his affiliation with Master Logos, Ryoga is considered Kento's true enemy. However, he had since abandoned this view after Isaac becomes a bigger threat.
  • Yuina Tachibana: Yuina is Kento's girlfriend eight years in the future. However, Kento has abstained from marrying her due to unknown reasons.

Behind the Scenes

Portrayal

Kento Fukamiya is portrayed by Ryo Aoki (青木 瞭, Aoki Ryō). As Kamen Rider Espada and Kamen Rider Calibur, his suit actor is Yuji Nakata (中田 裕士, Nakata Yūji) [10].

Etymology

  • As with the naming scheme of all the Saber Riders, Espada is named after the rapier, known to the Portuguese and Spanish as espada ropera, which literally means "dress sword", as it was often used as an accessory for clothing, either as fashion or self-defense.
  • As with the surname scheme of other members of Sword of Logos, Kento's surname, Fukamiya, contains a homophone of the kanji Kami () meaning "god" or "deity".

Concept Art

Notes

  • Kamen Rider Espada is one of the few Riders that uses a Spanish/Portuguese word in his Rider name, following Itsuro Takamizawa/Kamen Rider Verde in Kamen Rider Ryuki Special: 13 Riders and Oren Pierre Alfonzo/Kamen Rider Bravo in Kamen Rider Gaim.
  • Kento was originally supposed to have reddish hair as shown in the prologue, instead of his current darker hair color.
  • Kento's revival as Calibur had been foreshadowed a few times since his "death" in Episode 13.
    • Kento disappeared from Ankokuken Kurayami's darkness, instead of dying immediately, and appeared to have remained within the Seiken.
    • The Calibur that appeared in Episode 24 was portrayed by Nakata, who was previously the suit actor for Espada.
  • Espada's Arabiana Night suit is a recolor of Primitive Dragon with a new helmet.
