Kanato Sumida (墨田 奏斗, Sumida Kanato) is a high school student who participated in the Desire Grand Prix as Kamen Rider Da·Paan (仮面ライダーダパーン, Kamen Raidā Dapān).
History
Background
Kanato Sumida was a high school student who aspired to play basketball. Unfortunately, he was run over by a truck one night, which forced him to quit basketball. While everyone around him was happy, his own world was crashing down. Since then, he became misanthropic and became intent on bringing everyone else down with him.
Encounter Arc
As the next edition of the DGP began, Kanato was invited by Tsumuri to join the Desire Grand Prix. He is shown to dislike mingling with other participants, such as when he refused to team up with Neon Kurama and rebuffed Morio Koganeya's attempts to trade Raise Buckles. Kanato was able to retrieve the Magnum Buckle, and in the emergency mission, he was able to snipe the Touzoku Jyamato from a safe area above a tree.
During the Zombie Hunting mission, Kanato as Da·Paan rebuffed Neon's calls for help. While sniping on a rooftop, Kanato was attacked by the Zombie Jyamato and turned into a zombie in the process. He later tried to propose to Michinaga Azuma to work together, even offering the Magnum Buckle. During the second wave, Kanato suddenly appeared to help Neon. However, this turned out to be a ruse, and Kanato intended to lure her toward the zombies so she can get bit.
Fortunately, Ace Ukiyo arrived to rescue Neon, but she was in the process of zombification. Ace had deduced Kanato was turned into a zombie as he noticed when the Jyamato circled around him and only attacked Neon. Kanato's motive was to take Neon down with him, having experienced a miserable life after an incident that ended his basketball career. Rather than making his own life better, Kanato revealed his ideal world was for humanity to become extinct.
Because of his dangerous nature, Kanato was tied up in the Desire Temple's boiler room. However, Kanato gave Michinaga the Magnum Buckle in exchange for loosening the rope around his wrists. When he tried to attack the other players, Kanato witnessed Neon bravely finish the second round. Although their zombie infections disappear, Kanato became the player with the lowest score and was eliminated. Kanato madly laughed and looked forward to seeing who would join him before vanishing.
Genesis Arc
After his memories were erased, he returned back to school. However after the world had been remade, he regained his memories. He was approached by Beroba and was given back his Da·Paan gear to inflict misery on humanity. He attacked Neon during her shopping trip with her mother Irumi Kurama, and targeted the latter specifically. He was supported by VIP members of the Desire Grand Prix recruited by Zitt, and was given a Beat Buckle. Though defeated by Na-Go Fantasy, he escaped having injured Irumi.
Kanato is brought to Keiwa's Gang Riders headquarters by Beroba, and he attempted to empathize with Keiwa's recent losses, having suffered a similar experience himself. Later, Kanato witnessed Geats and Tycoon fighting, while he is approached by Michinaga and Neon.
When Ace recreated the world, Kanato was stripped from his rider status once more, albeit offscreen. The last that's seen of Kanato is a wish made from him at Ace Ukiyo's Shrine saying how he wants to play basketball again.
Personality
Kanato is a vain, resentful, and misanthropic individual who sees people as pests due to an accident that forced him to give up basketball. His misanthropic antipathy is exemplified through him defiantly rejecting teamwork and trading offers. Additionally, he has no qualms about disobeying the rules of the game such as betraying and attacking other teammates, which is exemplified by shooting Neon to knock her into a horde of Zombie Jyamato, as well as attempting to shoot Ace to no avail. His hatred for humanity is so strong that his desire is to live in a world completely devoid of them. Despite his hatred, he is willing to team with individuals he deems similar to him, such as Michinaga Azuma. He also refuses to believe in any hope and hates others expressing it, constantly claiming it was all over for him and Neon when they were infected by the Zombie Jyamato.
It's implied from the desire written on his Ema in the finale that his misanthropic attitude disappeared when he got eliminated from the Desire Grand Prix, as he only wishes to want to play basketball again, as well as the fact that his desire to destroy humanity would have disappeared.
In combat, he prefers to shoot his enemies with the Magnum Buckle from a higher distance, rarely going into direct combat. However, as he mainly focuses on a large horde of enemies to shoot at, he can be unaware of his surroundings, which was demonstrated when he was ambushed and bitten by a Zombie Jyamato.
