Kamen Rider Revice (仮面ライダーリバイス, Kamen Raidā Ribaisu) is a Japanese Tokusatsu drama in Toei Company's Kamen Rider Series. It is the third series to debut in the Reiwa Era and the thirty-second overall, and serves to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the franchise. The series premiered on September 5, 2021, joining Kikai Sentai ZenkaigerIcon-crosswiki.png in the Super Hero Time line-up after the finale of Kamen Rider Saber. After Zenkaiger’s conclusion on February 27, 2022, the series will be joined in the Super Hero Time line-up by Avataro Sentai DonbrothersIcon-crosswiki.png.

The series' catchphrase is "The hero and the demon are a tag team... in other words, the strongest!" (ヒーローと悪魔が相棒タッグ... つまり最強!, Hīrō to akuma ga taggu... Tsumari saikyō!)

The series motif are animals, stamps and demons.

Production

Development

Development on Kamen Rider Revice began during the height of COVID-19, where producer Taku Mochizuki had wanted to do a "road film"-type concept that symbolized the end of the pandemic. However as the virus showed no signs of slowing down, Mochizuki choose to go with a family drama instead.[1] Revice is the third series to be an anniversary like Decade and Zi-O, and Mochizuki felt that the trope of having former Rider actors appear in guest spots was overused, but still wanted to incorporate each of the past Riders into the many forms of Revi and Vice.[2]

Series' scriptwriter Hanta Kinoshita revealed that he also had originally pitched an idea for a female primary Rider, but it was rejected fairly quickly.[3]

Writing

Although one of the major themes of Revice is family, most of the drama comes from the community of people surrounding the Igarashi siblings. Moreover, the idea of an ordinary family running a public bath and doing typical daily activities was heavy pushed to balance out all of the action that comes from both the Kamen Rider fighting scenes and the demon exposition. There were also plans for Yukimi Igarashi to die in the first episode, but the idea was scrapped as the show's theme was family and not revenge. To further symbolize the family theme, the Igarashi family have a family dinner in the first episode.

Filming

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the guest spots in Saber ultimately became main cast members, so a conscious effort was made to make sure Revice has plenty of one-off guest appearances in matter similar to Kamen Rider W and Kamen Rider OOO, with the story of the episode that they appear in, revolving around them. Because the genre of Revice isn't fantasy, certain filming techniques from Saber were unable to be used. However, the production team were able to properly film across Japan this time, allowing more on-location shoots while following proper COVID-19 prevention protocols. To emphasize the public baths theme, many scenes with the cast in them were filmed.

Post Production

Toei Company confirmed and filed the trademark for Revice on May 23, 2021. In June, Revice was revealed to the public in promotional posters for Saber + Zenkaiger: Superhero SenkiIcon-crosswiki.png, followed by toy magazine promos a few weeks later. On July 27, 2021, Toei held a press conference to unveil the heroes and further discussed the details of the show, while also officially announcing Kinoshita has the series' head screenwriter. The series premiered on September 5, 2021.

Plot

In 1971, a scientific expedition in Latin America had uncovered an ancient artifact containing the remains of the devil Giff, leading to the creation of the Vistamps. Present day, the remains of Giff now lie in the hands of a demon cult called the Deadmans, who seek to resurrect him by convert peoples' inner devils to their fold. Fenix, a governmental organization opposing the Deadmans, have developed the Revice Driver for someone with complete control over their inner devil. Ikki Igarashi, a young man who runs a public bath with his family, comes into acquisition of the belt while forming a contract with his inner devil Vice. Together, as Kamen Rider Revi and Vice, they are Kamen Rider Revice!

Release

  • Revice premiered on TV Asahi on September 5, 2021.
  • Revice will be released on Blu-Ray in several collections throughout 2022.

Notes

  • Kamen Rider Revice is the first mainstream season of the Kamen Rider Series whose title is not the name of its protagonist, as it is a combination of the names of its two protagonists: Kamen Rider Revi and Kamen Rider Vice. It is the second season to do so after Kamen Rider Amazons.
  • The show’s title card incorporates the number 50 with Revice's logo in the 0, as this series is the primary representative of Kamen Rider’s 50th anniversary.
  • The show utilizes an actual hover-bike as the main Rider Machine, a first for the franchise. The XTURISMO vehicle was developed by Japanese tech development firm A.L.I. Technologies, which went on sale in October of 2021.
  • It was originally reported that all the previous installments of Kamen Rider would exist as a fictional franchise within the continuity of Revice, in a vein similar to Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER. However, producer Taku Mochizuki has clarified that this has been changed to allow Revice to exist in the same universe as its predecessors, allowing for crossovers like Saber's final episode to occur easily.[9]
    • Despite Mochizuki's statement, the crossover with Saber conflicts with the timeline of Revice due to the aforementioned episode taking place in 2022 due to a time skip, creating a continuity discrepancy. This is another case of early Kamen Rider debuts ignoring real world dates.
