This article is about a series entry (the 37th) in the Kamen Rider Series. |
- For the series' main character, Geats, see Ace Ukiyo.
Kamen Rider Geats (仮面ライダーギーツ, Kamen Raidā Gītsu) is a Japanese tokusatsu drama in Toei Company's Kamen Rider Series. It is the fourth series to debut in the Reiwa Era and the thirty-seventh overall. The series premiered on September 4, 2022, joining Avataro Sentai Donbrothers in the Super Hero Time lineup after the finale of Kamen Rider Revice. After Donbrothers concluded, Geats was joined in the Super Hero Time line-up by Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger. After the finale of Geats, King-Ohger was joined by Kamen Rider Gotchard in the Super Hero Time block.
The series' catchphrase is "This game ― The winner in the end is me" (このゲーム―最後に勝つは俺だ, Kono Gēmu ― Saigo ni Katsu wa Ore da).
Production[]
Development[]
Kamen Rider had grown to a point where everyone in Japan at least knew what it was. As each succeeding series premiered, the number of Riders at debut has continuously grown but aren't necessarily stronger than the last. However, series head writer Yuya Takahashi believed that the brand's power was also declining as well, so he capitalized on the popularity of having multiple Riders in one series while pitting them in a popular theme of today's standards, such as survival games like Fortnite and Apex Legends to appeal to a new target audience.[1]
However, rather than having the Riders fight and defeat each other like a battle royale in Kamen Rider Ryuki, Takahashi wanted to tackle more of a game in the sense of Kaiji and the more recently popular Netflix series, Squid Game, where the Riders attempt to save the world instead. Takahashi and Takabe both stated that reincarnation was also a secondary theme of Geats, which formulated the creation of the Desire Grand Prix.[2]
Takahashi also believed that the original spirit of Kamen Rider was growing weaker, so he created the Rider Core IDs to symbolize the individuality of each character, which does not exist for Riders with more than one transformant.
Writing[]
Takahashi noted that historically speaking, Kamen Rider is all about fighting and defeating enemies, but that is a formula that will eventually get repetitive. As such, he found it imperative and necessary to diversify how the enemies were fought and their defeat conditions. As a result, Geats became a show not just about fighting monsters, but also about playing games. Takahashi stated that the games he wrote in Kamen Rider Ex-Aid were limited to just racing games and RPGs, but the scope of Geats' story allowed for a greater freedom of genres, such as games even children can play in the playground. [3]
Post-production[]
Toei Company confirmed and filed the trademark for Geats on May 31, 2022. On June 26, 2022, the copyright trademark updated to reveal the official title card of the show.[4] Advance screenings of Kamen Rider Revice: Battle Familia revealed a September 4, 2022 premiere date for Geats along with a short story teaser.
A press conference was held on August 7, 2022, revealing Hideyoshi Kan, Ryuga Sato, Yuna Hoshino, Kazuto Mokudai, Kokoro Aoshima, and former Wizard-star Shugo Oshinari as main cast members, as well as Koda Kumi and Gaim-singers Shonan no Kaze as theme song artists. On August 14, 2022, it was announced that Nene Shida had joined the cast. On August 21, 2022, several actors were announced to have joined the cast as Riders, which include Tomoharu Hasegawa, former Kyoryuger-star Yamato Kinjo, Koji Abe, and Ryunosuke Miyamoto.

Episodes[]
- Main article: Kamen Rider Geats Episodes
The show is separated into arcs corresponding to each season of the Desire Grand Prix. The name of each arc is composed of two kanji.[8]
- Episodes 1, 49: Daybreak Arc (黎明編, Reimei-hen)
- Episodes 2-9: Encounter Arc (邂逅編, Kaikō-hen)
- Episodes 10-16: Conspiracy Arc (謀略編, Bōryaku-hen)
- Episodes 17-24: Divergence Arc (乖離編, Kairi-hen)

- Episodes 33-38: Yearning Arc (慕情編, Bojō-hen)
- Episodes 39-48: Genesis Arc (創世編, Sōsei-hen)
Each episode title starts with the arc name, followed by a Roman numeral. The numbering resets when a new DGP starts, and the final episode each DGP arc is typically denoted by F, for "Final"[9]. Exceptions to the numbering format exist, which usually occurs when the current game is disrupted. These exceptions include IR ("Irregular")[10], T ("Trouble")[11], and SP ("Special")[12]. Every odd-numbered episode during the Jyamato Grand Prix additionally ends with a heart (♡).

- Kamen Rider Geats was licensed in North America by Shout! Studios. Broadcast of the series began on the TokuSHOUTsu channel on February 14, 2024, while pre-orders for the Blu-Ray opened on the same day, to be released in late April 2024.[16][17]
- The announcement was supposed to be a surprise that would be announced on Valentine’s Day during “Mystery Rider Week”, but an incident occurred that revealed the licensing of Geats to the public early as Barnes and Noble prematurely listed the Blu-Ray set on their online order listings.[18]
- Another minor controversy was that the livestream’s tagline was “Mystery on the wind”, which fans misinterpreted as a clue that Kamen Rider W was the next show to be licensed. Shout! later clarified that the tagline was a reference to the random selection of Rider episodes on TokuShoutsu’s stream and the wind power reference was alluding to Kamen Rider 1.[19]
- An Indonesian dub premiered on July 29, 2024.[20]
Notes[]
- As of 2022, Kamen Rider Geats holds the record for having the most Riders that either appeared or were mentioned in the series, succeeding Kamen Rider Hibiki and Kamen Rider Gaim.
- This series, alongside Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger, would simultaneously air with other streaming platforms such as TVer and ABEMA. Following the next episode previews, there will be promotional segments featuring Kamen Rider Geats announcing the availability on these platforms.
- However, an incident occurred with the thirty-fourth episode, which was supposed to broadcast on May 7, 2023. TVer and ABEMA had accidentally aired the episode on April 30, 2023, but was promptly removed after this was made apparent.
- The series coincided with the 10th anniversary of Kamen Rider Wizard, in which Geats cast member Shugo Oshinari was a cast member of in its summer film Kamen Rider Wizard in Magic Land. As Oshinari was busy filming Geats, he was unable to physically attend the Kamen Rider Wizard 10th Anniversary Special Reunion Special SHOW TIME (仮面ライダーウィザード 10周年特別同窓会 Special SHOW TIME, Kamen Raidā U~izādo Jyu-shūnen Tokubetsu Dōsōkai Supesharu Sho Taimu) project that his other cast members were a part of. Instead, he had recorded a special message that was played during the reunion special.
