Kamen Rider Black Sun (仮面ライダー BLACK SUN, Kamen Raidā Burakku San) is an upcoming Japanese tokusatsu drama based on the 1987 TV series Kamen Rider Black, announced as part of the Kamen Rider 50th Anniversary.[1]

It is expected to premiere sometime during the spring of 2022.[2]

Like previous reboots (Kamen Rider The First, The Next and Amazons) in the Heisei Era, Kamen Rider Black Sun is a Showa Rider reboot series in the Reiwa Era. The project title had been announced on April 3, 2021, the 50th Anniversary of Kamen Rider.

On June 30, 2021, Shinichiro Shirakura was interviewed by Variety about Kamen Rider’s 50th anniversary, he spoke of the show’s intent to be for older audiences and to use practical effects as much as possible mixed with CGI. He then commented on how Masked Rider failed when Black and Black RX got adapted in 1995 and joked this series is Toei’s “payback” to Saban.

Shirakura also commented that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a potential model for their international expansion plans.[3]

On October 4, the 34th Anniversary of Kamen Rider Black, CinemaToday revealed that a press conference will take place on November 19 to reveal teaser images of the show and the official Black Sun Twitter page retweeted it to confirm its authenticity[4]

  • Kamen Rider Black Sun is the second reboot series oriented towards a mature audience, the first being Kamen Rider Amazons.
  • The series will be released in the year 2022, which marks the 35th anniversary of Kamen Rider Black.
  • As part of the build up to the series, Bandai made a crowdfunding campaign for a remake of the 1987 DX TV Power Henshin Belt called the "DX Henshin Belt King Stone".[7] Since the old belt responded to flashing from a CRT TV, the remake comes with a special DVD of Kamen Rider Black episodes to activate the infrared sensor during Kohtaro’s transformation scenes. The crowdfund was successful gaining 140% of its intended goal with almost ¥28 million in funds.
