Kamen Rider Agito (仮面ライダーアギト, Kamen Raidā Agito, Masked Rider ΑGITΩ), is a Japanese tokusatsu drama in Toei Company's Kamen Rider Series. It is the second entry to debut in the Heisei Era and the fifteenth overall. Created as a joint collaboration to celebrate the franchise's 30 anniversary, the series premiered on January 28, 2001, joining Mirai Sentai TimerangerIcon-crosswiki for a brief moment, in the Super Hero TimeIcon-crosswiki lineup.

After Mirai Sentai TimerangerIcon-crosswiki ended, Timeranger got replaced with Hyakuju Sentai GaorangerIcon-crosswiki.

The catchphrase for the series is: "Awaken the soul" (目覚めろ、その魂, Mezamero, sono tamashii).

The average rating of the series was 11.7%.[1]

Connection with Kuuga[]

Agito explicitly states that the show takes place two years after the eradication of Unidentified Lifeforms, with Kuuga himself later being the basis for Kamen Rider G3, indicating that amount of time has passed since the end of Kamen Rider Kuuga. However Agito is set in 2001, meaning only a year at most would have passed since Kuuga, creating a continuity error.[2][3] Producer Shin-ichiro Shirakura later stated that Agito takes in a parallel universe where their own variation of events from Kuuga had occurred in a similar way. This was done to meet the demands of fans who either asked for a sequel to Kuuga or a new Rider with a new theme relevant to the year 2001.[4][5]

The connection between the two series were referenced in Kamen Rider Decade, where the World of Agito is shown to be a parallel world of World of Kuuga due to the appearances of the "Unknown", Gurongi, as well as both Ai Yashiro and Tohko Yashiro being direct counterparts to each other. In future crossovers, Kuuga and Agito are both seen fighting alongside each other in the same vein as both Kamen Riders Black and Black RX, with RX being a confirmed direct sequel to its predecessor.

The connection is also acknowledged in the Kamen Rider Kuuga manga series where it also adapts Agito and its contemporary elements into the story's canonicity.

Story[]

A man named Shoichi Tsugami has lost his memories. He doesn't know who he is, where he came from, or how he came upon his peculiar circumstances.

Tsugami, seemingly for no reason, transforms into a powerful superhuman, Agito, whenever in the presence of the beings referred by the police as the "Unknown", a race of powerful monsters that have been causing murders around Tokyo, targeting certain people as their prey.

In response, the police department unleash their newest weapon: the G3 powersuit, originally developed to fight against the "Unidentified Lifeforms", the enemies of No.4 (Kamen Rider Kuuga). G3 and Agito don't know whether they should join up and defeat the Unknowns, their common enemy, or to combat each other, keeping the mysteries that entwine them separate. Ultimately, even more mysteries unfold, with the appearance of Kamen Rider Gills, who is on a search to uncover why his father committed suicide.

These mysteries and others collide, as the true nature of Agito would ultimately determine the fate of humanity.

The series is divided into two story arcs[6]:

  • Episode 01-28 - "Impossible Crime" Arc (「不可能犯罪」編, "Fukanō Hanzai"-Hen), this arc introduces most of the main characters and plot. Makoto Hikawa as Kamen Rider G3 investigates a series of inexplicable murders, Shoichi Tsugami fights the Unknown as Agito and Ryo Ashihara discovers his powers as Gills.
  • Episode 29-46 - "Revealed Past" Arc (「明かされる過去」編, "Akasareru Kako"-Hen), this arc makes Shoichi discover his past and his true identity by regaining his memories, while also discovering that this is linked to Makoto and Ryo's pasts. It also leads to the movie Project G4.
  • Episode 47-51 - "Agito and the Future of Mankind" Arc (「アギトと人類の未来」編, "Agito to Jinrui no Mirai"-Hen), this arc concludes the story with the fact that mankind was fated to evolve endlessly, for every human to become an Agito.

Albums[]

A few albums were released for Kamen Rider Agito, mostly original soundtracks for the series and film.

International broadcasts[]

  • In the Philippines, it was aired on ABS-CBN with a Tagalog dub from 2003 to 2004 as Masked Rider Agito.
  • The series was released on the TOKU network on November 3, 2020. It is the third Kamen Rider series released in the United States and the first not released by Shout Factory.[7]
  • On April 24th, 2021, Agito, alongside Faiz and Ryuki, appeared dubbed in Spanish on Latin American countries except Brasil and Puerto Rico in the streaming service FreeTV.
  • An English dub of the series, for viewers in the United States, was released in FreeTV on May 2023. [8]

Notes[]

  • Agito is the first Kamen Rider series to feature the three main types of Riders: a mystical Rider (one that draws power from ancient technology or mystical methods), an organic Rider (one whose anatomy changes to become a Rider), and a high-technology Rider (one who is either a cyborg or uses advanced technology to fight).
  • This is the last series where the Kamen Riders transform using the traditional Ishinomori style henshin belt, as future installments would use the modular "Rider System" type.
  • This is the first Heisei Rider series with more than one titular Kamen Rider appearing in the series, as everyone who has been bestowed the power of Overlord of Light has the potential to transform into Agito. In the series timeline Shouichi is the second Agito, with his sister Yukina Sawaki being the first Agito, and followed by numerous people slowly becoming it, but most of them failed to transform into Agito, either because they commit suicide or are killed by The Lords.
  • This is the first Heisei Era Kamen Rider series that has it's own movie. Originally, the preceding series was going to have it's own until it was scrapped due to lack of enough funding. Kamen Rider Agito would start the tradition of summer movies as seen in the later entries of the franchise.
  • This is the first Rider series with a "speaking device", in the form of G3-X's GX-05 Kerberos. This would begin a significant usage of speaking devices within Kamen Rider; all of the Visors of the Riders in Kamen Rider Ryuki would likewise speak, while the Drivers of Kamen Rider 555 would be the first transformation device to speak.
  • This is the last series that is associated with Nippon Music Group. From Kamen Rider Ryuki onwards, Avex Entertaiment became the new music label for Kamen Rider Series.
  • At Japan World Heroes 2017, after revealing he auditioned for Kuuga but didn't get the part, Noboru KanekoIcon-crosswiki revealed at a panel that he then auditioned for two roles in Agito: Shoichi Tsugami and Makoto Hikawa. But he failed to pass the final auditions. After a try at getting a villain role, including growing his hair and nails and trying to "act mean" to do the role, Noboru was called by his agent who said he got the role as GaoRed of the then-new Sentai series: GaorangerIcon-crosswiki.
  • The word "Agito" is Latin for "I put in motion", "keep going", "move", fitting the theme of endless evolution of the titular Kamen Rider and the show itself.
  • This was the first show to include a romanized title "MASKED RIDER AGITΩ" to the show's logo, a title that would continue to this day.
  • Among others, Toshiki Kashu's casting as Shoichi Tsugami was intended to emulate the "Odagiri effect", which was created following Joe Odagiri's casting in Kamen Rider Kuuga. According to Toei, the phenomenon was working as intended as they attracted a large enough female audience, much to the dismay of most male viewers.
  • This is the first Rider series to abandon the concept of one or two Riders against evil, this time featuring more than 4 Riders. This new tradition would continue on through the Heisei and later Reiwa Rider series aswell.
