Mei Hanakawa (花川 芽衣, Hanakawa Mei), previously known under the stage name Yui Asakura (浅倉 唯, Asakura Yui), and currently as Hikari Kabashima (椛島 光, Kabashima Hikari), is a Japanese actress, voice actress, and singer who portrayed Hana Natsuki/Kamen Rider Aguilera in Kamen Rider Revice.
Biography[]
Hanakawa grew up watching anime and always admired voice actors and idols. Due to her lack of self-esteem, she skipped school often and watched anime at home with her father. She moved out to Tokyo alone in 2016 to attend college, but also had a secret aspiration to become an idol. She became a member of the idol group 22/7 (ナナブンノニジュウニ, Nanabun no Nijūni), where she portrayed the character Nicole Saito. However due to poor health, she graduated from the group early in 2019, but still continued to pursue voice acting as well as an on-camera career.
After a two-year hiatus, she joined LIBERA and returned to the entertainment industry under a new stage name Yui Asakura (浅倉 唯, Asakura Yui). The following year, she auditioned for the role of Sakura Igarashi in Kamen Rider Revice, but was deemed too mature for the role of a high-school student. She received the callback and was cast in Aguilera, a role that was adjusted to tailor-fit Asakura due to her age not being known at the time of her audition.[1]
In 2022, Asakura was a victim of stalking and left her agency due to their inactivity.[2] In December of that year, Asakura joined Across Entertainment under a new stage name "Hikari Kabashima".[3]
Personal life[]
- Kabashima liked watching Super Sentai
more as a child, as Kamen Rider was often too scary for her, though an exception was Kamen Rider Den-O.[4] When she auditioned for Revice, she was reminded of Den-O when she watched Kamen Rider Saber as it was airing.
Stalking Incident[]
On June 18, 2022, Asakura was sexually harassed by an unknown man who broke into her residence after following her home from work. Asakura proceeded to notify both the police and her agency, which both seemingly took no action to help her.[5] For additional security, childhood friend and Zenkaiger-star Ryo Sekoguchi began walking her home, with unsolicited images of them appearing in a report by magazine FRIDAY, who falsely claimed they were dating.[6] LIBERA stated their investigation deemed the incident a non-issue, a statement Asakura heavily criticized to which she retorted with her own account of the story and announced her intent to leave the agency.[7][8]
On September 23, 2022, LIBERA announced that they had filed a lawsuit against Asakura for defamation. Asakura later stated that her main reason for leaving was because due to LIBERA being late on payments to Asakura and several of her colleagues. Because she was unable to make ends meet on time, she began working part-time at a bar-like shop, which spread a false rumor that she had secretly worked as a hostess. Furthermore, she clarified that she was only late to filming Revice twice due to oversleeping as opposed to rumors that stated her lateness was habitual.[9]
Though likely for other reasons as well, Sekoguchi himself had also left LIBERA that November.[10]
Sexual Harassment Incident[]
On September 21, 2022, Weekly Women's PRIME and Yahoo Japan reported that Asakura was a victim of sexual harassment by a co-star on set of Kamen Rider Revice. Multiple scenes featuring Asakura and the unnamed co-star were cut, and the filming schedule was altered to accommodate for Asakura's situation by having her and the unnamed co-star film at different times. Asakura herself has not yet commented on this incident.[11]
