This article is about an episode in Kamen Rider Gavv. |
Happy Zakuzakuchips (幸せザクザクチップス, Shiawase Zakuzakuchippusu) is the second episode of Kamen Rider Gavv. It features the debuts of Gavv Zakuzakuchips Form and the Stomach Family.
Synopsis[]
Shoma, who has collapsed from hunger again, is helped by Sachika, who runs an anything and everything general store, and treats him to lunch and snacks.
Hanto, while working on a case story, discovers information about Gavv on a social networking service. He starts interviewing witnesses.
Shoma is asked by Sachika's friend Ritsu to assist her in her "anything goes" job.
That night, Shoma is led out by a Gochizo, who suddenly appears, and runs into a man dressed in a jogging outfit. The man transforms into a Granute, and Shoma transforms into Gavv, and they clash!
Plot[]
Shoma briefly recaps the story so far, stating that after scaring Hajime’s mother, he has decided to keep his identity as a Granute a secret from humanity as otherwise he will scare more humans away if they find out.
Continuing immediately from the previous episode, Sachika Amane discovers that the unconscious Shoma is starving when she hears his stomach growling. She is relieved that he isn’t dead and asks if he can stand up and walk, helping him up as the Gochizo watch from a distance, she then offers to let Shoma come over to her place and guides him there. They arrive at a colorful apartment complex and into a store called Hapipare, which Sachika is the president of.
She gives Shoma a soft fluffy towel that he mistakenly thinks is cotton candy based on its smell and tries to eat it, which Sachika stops him from doing. She says that she gave him the towel because he probably has not bathed in a while and needs to get cleaned up first before they have lunch, insisting on the use of her shower.
At the Granute homeworld in the corporate offices of Stomach Inc., the Stomach siblings start their meeting with a status update about the termination of Shoma, with production manager Glotta asking if they found a corpse yet. The CEO, Lango, says that they have no confirmation yet, so he will send Agents down to Earth to investigate and confirm if Shoma is dead. Glotta berates her brother for his Agents slacking on confirming their kill, but Nyelv, the R&D chief, chimes in that at least his older brother did something about Shoma unlike her.
Back on Earth, twins Shita and Jeebh, heads of the Procurement Division, tell their older siblings to stop fighting as they now own the company with the death of their father and the “woman” is now “out of the picture”. Stomach Inc. will only thrive as a business if they cooperate. Lango agrees and changes the subject to business operations, asking about how the procurement of humans is going, Jeebh says that he found “a good human” while his sister Shita says that she found an “okay one”.
Lango insists that the twins find more high quality targets as he plans on attracting rich customers and investors, Glotta asks if that means an expansion of their premium line of Dark Snacks, promising to “strut her stuff” if that is the case. Her reflection in the mirror reveals that she is some kind of squid like alien, with Lango revealing to be a demon-like creature in his reflection as he walks through the hallway of the facility onto the balcony. Lango says if there is nothing further to report then the meeting is adjourned, though takes note of Nyelv’s refusal to use his image inducer device and insists that he wears it to assume human form when in classified areas and he hopes not to repeat himself again. Nyelv is annoyed he got caught but does as he is told, putting the device in his Gavv to become a bespectacled young human male.
Once the call is completed, Jeeph asks Shita why she omitted the fact that one of their “part timers” has gone missing, but she dismisses it since their hired help “walk out all the time” but asks her brother if this time it bothers him. Jeeph says it does a little, so she decides that they should snoop around together. Some nearby junked CRT televisions briefly flicker on to reveal the true forms of The Stomach Twins are a pair of cat-like aliens and the two then suddenly vanish when they flicker off.
Back at Hapipare, Shoma has finished washing up and finds snacks on the table that Sachika brought from the convenience store. He immediately starts eating some gummies, which spawns Gochizo that go into hiding so that they are not spotted. Shoma decides to put eating snacks on hold and discovers a bento box of chicken and rice, which he finds delicious and says he has never had this before. Sachika is confused about him never having a boxed lunch before as Shoma discovers that regular food does not generate a Gochizo, with her asking if he dropped something, which he tries dodging by saying that he thought he did.
Shoma then sees a bag of potato chips and asks if that is what they are, which Sachika awkwardly says yes they are chips. He opens the bag and says that they truly are thin and round and enjoys his first bite of the crispy snack. Sachika finds Shoma very strange for never having eaten either chips or bento box meals, asking if he had a strict family while Shoma is slowly reaching for a bucket with his foot to collect the new Zakuzakuchips Gochizo coming out of his body without Sachika noticing. He says that is sort of the situation he had, this leads her to assume that Shoma is running away from home and that makes total sense to her.
Her phone rings and she answers, which startles Shoma a bit because he has never heard a cellphone ring before as he searches for the source of the sound. While she is on the phone, Shoma gathers up his Gochizo and hides them in his pocket and gets back to sitting in his chair before Sachika notices. He asks her if that call involved work, to which she says it does as a friend bailed on another friend helping her move so she is coming to help her with a truck.
Shoma wants to repay Sachika's kindness by helping out with the job, saying he is very strong and confident that he can do it. She accepts the offer, but gives him a toothbrush first and insists that he brushes his teeth before going to work.
In an office, having just solved the murder case from earlier and getting views on the internet for his big scoop, Hanto’s mentor Soji praises him for his work. But the reporter is not interested in that as he has a hit on the mysterious monsters he witnessed earlier on the Internet from his phone, with eyewitnesses posting on a Twitter-like platform images of a mysterious creature and something else. He managed to get the contact information of a witness from someone online and is going to follow up on his investigation by interviewing this person, racing off to get the story.
Meanwhile, Shoma uses his super strength to load in the piles of boxes onto the truck and then unloads all the stuff into a new apartment belonging to the client Ritsu Sato. He then uses his super speed to unpack the boxes and decorate the room in record time, the girls are impressed with Shoma’s strength which he blushes about saying its just one of his good points. Ritsu celebrates her first day moving inside her new place, thanking Shouma and Sachika for their help and hugging the latter as they both jump up and down and squeal with joy. Shoma smiles, enjoying this tender moment, while Sachika says that they should have a housewarming meal of “hikkoshi soba” but Shoma is content with just having chips to snack on when asked what he wants. Shoma once again generates chip themed Gochizo and knocks the two into a moving box to avoid them being seen while Sachika later smiles watching her new friend, happy in the joy he brought to her client.
Hanto gets a tip from the guy who contacted him at the harbor and then goes to the Hiori residence, where Hajime’s mother hysterically sensationalizes her encounter with the “monsters”, but Hajime interjects that one of them was trying to save them. Hanto tries to get more information from Hajime, but he plays dumb with the reporter and says he doesn’t remember anything else to protect Shoma. Hanto then asks Hajime‘a mother to draw a sketch of the monsters to aid in his investigation.
Somewhere in an abandoned building, the Granute Whiple just finished eating a Dark Snack when he gets a call on his cellphone, he changes into the guise of a male jogger and answers the text. The Twins have ordered him to take Ritsu as product for their premium line of Treats…
Later, as dusk begins to fall, Shoma has got his clothes back on from the laundry and receives a paycheck for his services from Sachika, who considers it a “survival fund” for him despite it not being much. She wonders about his love of snacks, which Shoma says he got from his late mother telling him stories.
He has a flashback to a meal of a black gruel like food the two of them were eating, with Michiru reluctantly putting it in her mouth and wishing she could have potato chips instead. Little Shoma asked her what a potato chip was and this cheered Michiru up as she smiled and told her son that chips are yellow, round, thin and crispy snacks from the human world. Shoma says that she always seemed happier talking about the snacks she loved with him, so much so that it made him smile too.
Upon hearing his story, Sachika gives Shoma a gift, a “tasty diary” that will allow him to collect the memories of all the snacks he tries for the first time and what ones he dreams of eating so he doesn’t forget them or the good times he has experiencing them. Shoma thanks the “Prez” for the gift, which she finds a little awkward hearing, and she officially introduced herself. Shoma almost gives Sachika his full name, but hesitates and then lies by using his mother’s maiden name: Shoma Inoue.
Sachika immediately decides to nickname Shoma “Umasho” (a play on words as it refers to the phrase “looks tasty”) and offers him a place to stay with her since she has so many rooms in her store. Shoma is hesitant to accept the offer and asks if he seems suspicious to her, wondering why Sachika is being so generous to him. Sachika shows that her name has the character for “happiness” in it and so she tries to have that built into who she is. She feels that everyone deserves to experience happy moments and that is why she started her handyman service business, to bring happiness by helping others in need, though she still gets paid for it but admits it is just all talk coming from her.
Shoma disagrees, as they made Ritsu happy earlier, he thinks that Sachika is a cool person for jumping in to bring a bit of joy to a friend in need. This makes Sachika smile and she thanks Shoma for his kind words.
Later that evening, the two Zakuzaku Chip Gochizo that were in the moving box in Ritsu’s apartment wake up to realize they both had been left behind by Shoma and frantically try to get back to where he is while avoiding getting stepped on by pedestrians walking around the city. The two stumble upon Ritsu returning from shopping and suddenly getting pressed and abducted by Whiple, who thinks that she has a special level of “spice” that his superiors will value given how happy she seemed. The two chip Gochizo book it back to Hapipare to alert Shoma, who was eating snacks while working on his diary and about to leave to wander again not wanting to trouble Sachika, they arrive at the window to tell him what happened.
Shoma arrives at the abandoned building and confronts Whiple, demanding that he release Ritsu, which the slimy octopus refuses to do as he deactivates his disguise to fight, whipping Shoma back with his tentacle arms. Shoma transforms into Poppingummy form, which Whiple identifies as the form of a Granute, with Shoma aggressively attacking with his Gavvgablade. Whiple tries to negotiate a deal to get Shoma to stop attacking him by offering to split the reward of Dark Snacks for the pressed Ritsu, but this sends the hero into a blind rage thinking about Ritsu’s happiness being taken away. Shoma wildly attacks Whiple, berating him as human happiness does not exist for him to simply consume. He strikes him with a charged slash after pummeling him on the ground, taking the pressed Ritsu back from him, this causes Whiple to take the fight more seriously and he generates more tentacles from his body to damage Shoma’s armor. One of the Zakuzaku Gochizo offers to assist Shoma, who consumes it to change into a new potato chip armor: Zakuzaku Chips.
Once the transformation is complete, Shoma notices that he has twin blades as weapons, but they break when he tries to slash Whiple’s tentacles. He is able to cut his opponent when the sword blades regenerate and slice off the tentacles when he tries to do a defensive block. Shoma then does a quick bit of practice on some steel beams, figuring out the precise angle of his strikes can prevent the swords from breaking and then focuses his attention on his opponent. He hacks up Whiple’s tentacles and shoots potato chip shaped sword beams at his target. Shoma gives his final warning for Whiple to give up Dark Snacks or he will destroy him, which the addicted Whiple refuses so Shoma executes his finisher by breaking his blades and controlling the fragments to dice up Whiple’s tentacles as if he was in a blender, then rushes his opponent with a double Rider Slash to finish the job.
Shoma changes back into Poppinggummy and frees Ritsu, who is disoriented and then panics upon seeing Shoma, calling him a monster. Shoma is emotionally hurt by this but tries to keep it together, apologizing to Ritsu for scaring her and that she should be careful not to run into monsters again. Ritsu is confused by this as he summons the Vrocanbuggy and drives away. Hanto is nearby looking at the sketch of Gavv, saying that he finally found leads on monsters and has a flashback to 18 years ago when he was playing with his mother as a child, only to witness her being murdered and eaten by a wolf-like Granute. He hears the Vorcanbuggy and then sees the mysterious armored hero leaping into the moonlit sky, getting a glimpse of Shoma as Gavv as he lands and drives off. Hanto shouts that he has finally seen proof of what happened to him back when he was a child..,
The next morning, Sachika finds that Shoma has left, who is worried that scaring Ritsu will eventually be found out by Sachika and he leaves a note saying that he decided to decline her offer to stay with her, but is thankful for her hospitality and will try to follow her example to make others happy and promises to keep updating his diary that he got from her. Sachika doesn’t understand why he would leave as what he wrote doesn’t add up.
Meanwhile, Shita gets intelligence from an Agent about certain social media activities circulating around the internet, seeing the image of Hound being attacked by someone.…
