"Igarashi family, I want you to join me... as the founders of a new world."
―Giff[src]

Giff (ギフ, Gifu) is the main antagonist of Kamen Rider Revice. He is a demon from ancient times who had been the subject of worship by his acolyte Hideo Akaishi and his followers, the Deadmans.

History[]

Background[]

Giff in the past

Giff in the past.

Giff is a being from outer space that feeds on the malicious energy radiating from organisms. He had destroyed many alien civilizations across the universe, one of which was the homeworld of Izangi and Balidelo. Amazed by mankind's ability to give birth to malicious energy en masse, several millennia ago, Giff arrived on Earth and wished to co-exist with them. However as time passed, the many civilizations that rose and fell, all viewed Giff as a malevolent devil. One of them was an ancient prosperous civilization in America that was annihilated overnight for opposing him, leaving only their leaders, Hideo Akaishi and Azuma, behind. Before Giff could do the same with the rest of mankind, both convinced him to let them be the mediator between both races. Giff formed a contract with the two men, granting them immortality before entering a long slumber. Although Giff was still in his dormant state by 1971, he had determined that humanity had evolved to the point that their evil would cause them to destroy themselves. In order to protect his food supply, he arranged it so that he would be found by a team of South American archeologists, preparing for his own awakening.

Studied by the Government[]

Being deemed an OOPArt by scientists, organizations such as NOAH desired to weaponize him and created the Vistamps. After Masumi Karizaki created the powerful yet lethal Vail Driver, its prime candidate Junpei Shiranami received a DNA transplant from Giff to bypass the lethality, however his future children: Ikki, Daiji, and Sakura Igarashi would also unknowingly receive Giff's DNA as well, essentially making them Giff's descendants.

The Deadmans Crisis[]

Giff Rave

Giff's coffin in the Deadmans Base

Following the fall of NOAH, Giff's coffined state was stolen by Akaishi who worshipped it as the leader of the Deadmans. The cult also sought out Giff's relative Diablo to help progress Giff's revival, but he was destroyed following his own standalone plans to take over the world for himself, though this still had a positive reaction to Giff which was a sign that his revival was imminent.[Kamen Rider: Beyond Generations]

Giff at Fenix

Giff's coffin under Fenix custody

Though Orteca told Aguilera that Giff's revival requires six sacrifices, it actually only needed one which was her. During the process to fully revive Giff, the Deadmans Base was destroyed by Ikki Igarashi, thus halting the process but not restarting it due to both Amahiko Haitani and Yasushi Kudo having been absorbed. Giff's coffin is then seized by Fenix who continue to research it under the direction of George Karizaki and Akemi Mikoshiba.

Approaching Revival[]

With Giff's stamp in the possession of Orteca, the Gifftarians are then unleashed into the public, with each defeat fueling Giff's revival due to the creation of each requiring one human sacrifice. With his revival imminent, the warning signs are seen with the negative effects having spilled over Vice, Lovekov, and Kagero. Eventually, Giff's coffin became sentient enough to consume humans on its own. After his influence over Vice is temporarily halted with the creation of Jack Revice, the continued energy absorptions make the latter go out of control on its fellow Riders. In the midst of Jack Revice's rampage, Orteca fuses with Giff to acheive Phase 4 in the hopes of surpassing the devil himself, but is defeated by the new Kamen Rider Revice.

With his revival having been completed, Orteca is then absorbed while Giff sheds his coffin remains off revealing his true form. From then, he lies in his own personal domain with his victims floating around in cocoons. He had communicated with Akaishi to destroy the Fenix Skybase and several parts of the city while fighting the Riders. Ultimately after Akaishi falls, Giff's attempt to form a new contract with Daiji instead fails as he pulls Vice into his personal domain. He revealed his intent to destroy all of humanity except for his own family, the Igarashi family, who shared his DNA to Vice. However thanks to Daiji having regained Kagero and his balance of righteousness, EvilytyLive and Ultimate Revice are able to seal Giff back into his own domain temporarily.

Final Battle and Destruction[]

However, Giff would eventually find a way to escape from his domain by using Vice as his host. He would then offer the Igarashi family a chance to become his herald for the new world before leaving. After some time, Giff appears again with his army, confronted by Ikki, Vice and Daiji.

"Mark my words... Humans will always repeat their mistakes!"
―Giff's final words before his death[src]

Vice would enter Giff's domain, while Ikki and Daiji fight the demon lord. Within the domain, Vice discovers Giff's coffin and managed to destroy it along with Ikki, removing the demon's immortality. Greatly weakened, Giff immediately sics the copies of Deadmen on Igarashi siblings, but it is all for naught as he is destroyed by their combined Rider Kicks. Just before he met his end, Giff reminds the Igarashi siblings that humans will always repeat their mistakes over and over again.

Legacy[]

Rift in the Sky

The rift caused from Giff's destruction

Following Giff's destruction, it created a rift that persisted for over a year. George Karizaki would obtain his eyeballs and keep it with him. However, Chic would then steal one of them from George and use it to power up the Chimera Driver.

The last remains of Giff's power dwelt within Koshiro, the newborn of the Igarashi family. Izangi and Balidelo, a duo of aliens who came from another planet that had been ravaged by Giff himself and Colus, a former Game Master for the Desire Grand Prix, schemed to use Koshiro's demon to conquer the universe and create an eternal Desire Royale, respectively, although their plans were ultimately thwarted by the efforts of Kamen Rider Revice and Kamen Rider Geats.

Personality[]

Although much is not known about Giff's personality, he is shown to be ruthless and unsympathetic towards his enemies. This lack of sympathy even extends towards most of the Deadmans, as he devoured Orteca and slapped Aguilera out of rejection. The only exception is Hideo Akaishi, his loyal contract holder and servant, showing that he expects complete obedience, as Orteca allied with him to take his power, and Aguilera chose to become a Deadman when she was meant to be his vessel. For some reasons, Giff prefers avoiding direct combat unless necessary, usually having his underlings to do the work for him while he retreats to his own realm.

Forms[]

KRRe-Giff Coffin

Coffin of Giff

The Coffin of Giff (ギフの棺, Gifu no Hitsugi) is the dormant state that Giff was discovered in. After absorbing numerous Gifftex, Gifftarians, and humans, Giff shed the coffin and returned to his original form.

Abilities
  • Vibration Emission: Giff's coffin constantly emits heartbeat-like vibrations that become more powerful as he comes closer to his reawakening. After the failed Gifftex ritual, these vibrations caused the Deadmans Base to rise from the ground as a flying saucer.
    • Demon Influence: Giff's vibrations initially only caused headaches in nearby demons. As Giff nears his awakening, the vibrations begin to cause humans' inner demons to to become more aggressive even over long distances. Even an inner demon that was previously docile or well-suppressed by the host could become uncontrollable.
  • Selection (選択, Sentaku): A ritual through which Giff choses humans to become Gifftex. In the ritual, a candidate is presented in front of Giff's coffin. If the candidate passes, they become a Gifftex and are granted the ability to freely switch between their human and Phase 3 Deadman forms. If the candidate fails, they are erased.
  • Limb Manifestation: Giff's coffin is able to manifest arms made of energy in order to interact with the environment. He can also create energy tentacles to attack his enemies or pull victims to him in order to absorb them. Hands can be formed at the ends of the tentacles to grab targets with.
  • Absorption: After a Gifftex is defeated, they break into particles that are absorbed by Giff's coffin. If the Gifftex is defeated by Revice using the Volcano Vistamp, they are left unharmed while their Deadman form is still absorbed by Giff. Gifftarians are similarly absorbed by Giff when defeated. After nearing the completion of his awakening, Giff begins absorbing humans to speed up the process. People absorbed by Giff are actually transported to Giff's dimension, where they remain dormant in cocoons.
  • Lightning: Giff's coffin is capable of firing multiple red lightning bolts from the orb in the center.
  • Energy Beam: Giff's coffin can fire a deadly beam of red energy from its orb.
  • Durability: Despite analysis showing that Giff's coffin is made of ordinary stone, it was able to emerge unscathed from the explosion of the flying Deadmans Base as well as the impact of falling back to the ground.
  • Regeneration: Giff's coffin shares his regenerative abilities and is able to quickly recover from any damage.
  • Teleportation: After partially awakening, Giff gained the ability to teleport, which he used to escape to escape Fenix custody.
  • Flotation: After partially awakening, Giff was able to float through the air.

Giff

Statistics
  • Height: 223.1 cm
  • Weight: 136.2 kg

This is the original form of Giff, who was revived by absorbing many Deadmen and humans. He is capable of communication with Hideo Akaishi and uses the Giff Stamp within his body to create a new form of Gifftarian.

Abilities
  • Levitation: Giff is able to levitate and fly through the air at high speeds.
  • Pocket Dimension: Giff possesses a pocket dimension that he usually resides in. The people that he absorbed before being revived were also sent here and remain dormant in cocoons. This dimension is actually a part of Giff's being, and attacking his humanoid form will damage the dimension as a result. The dimension also contains Giff's coffin, which can act autonomously and retains its previous abilities. Destroying the coffin weakens Giff and makes it possible to destroy him.
  • Portal Creation: Giff is able to open portals to his personal dimension, allowing him and others to travel between it and the human world. Giff is also able to forcibly pull others through the portals.
  • Platform: While within his dimension, Giff resides on a floating platform composed of five squares in a cross formation. He can also use the platform to travel into the human world.
  • Gifftarian Creation: Giff is able to create numerous true Gifftarians, which lie dormant in floating orbs within his dimension until they are needed.
  • Contract: By forming a contract with a human, Giff grants them immortality in exchange for serving as his messenger to humanity. He is able to revoke this immortality if he wishes to.
  • Demon Materialization: Giff is able to grant another demon a physical form if they do not have one.
  • Demon Conversion: Giff is able to transform a human into a Giffdemos.
  • Absorption: Giff is able to instantly disintegrate humans and absorb them.
  • Telepathy: Giff is able to telepathically communicate with other demons and Hideo Akaishi.
  • Telekinesis: Without needing to physically move, Giff is able to blast away enemies with red energy or remotely destroy objects of any size.
  • Genetic Link: Giff can remotely cause immense pain to demons or humans with his genes.
  • Resurrection: Giff is able to revive a recently deceased person
  • Energy Beam: Giff can fire a deadly beam of red energy from his hand.
  • Energy Vortex: Giff can launch a large, swirling mass of red energy from his hand.
  • Energy Burst: Giff can create a burst of crimson energy from his hands at close range to push opponents away.
  • Energy Ray: Giff can produce a wide ray of red energy from his hand to attack an enemy.
  • Energy Restraints: Giff can create levitating shackles made of red energy that encircle each limb of a target in order to restrain them in the air.
  • Energy Blast: From his hand, Giff can launch a large blast of crimson energy powerful enough to destroy a large area.
  • Laser Vision: Giff can fire multiple lasers in succession through its eyes.
  • Giffsects: After being released from Giff's realm, the cocoons containing people Giff had previously absorbed proceeded to disperse into a swarm of demonic insects named Giffsects (ギフセクト, Gifusekuto)[1]. When these insects enter a human's body, they and anyone around them become encased in similar cocoons. The Giffsects can also congregate to form Gifftarians, Hell Gifftarians, or copies of Deadmen.
  • Demon Control: Giff can bring other demons under his control as well as speak through them.
  • Shockwave: Giff can produce a red shockwave that emanates in all directions from his body, attacking anyone around him.

Behind the Scenes[]

Portrayal[]

  • Throughout much of the first half of the series, a static prop was used for Giff's coffin form, with computer-generated effects and additional moan sound clips whenever he shows activity. His suit actor in his true form is Yasuhiko Imai (今井 靖彦, Imai Yasuhiko), who had previously suit-acted as the Rex Deadman in the series premiere and more recently as a true Gifftarian.
  • Giff is voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue (井上 和彦, Inoue Kazuhiko). He was portrayed as a mute character for much of the series until episode 44.

Notes[]

  • Giff's true form contains design elements of both Giff Juniors, Vice (Giff's white body beneath external armor) and the Giff Stamp.
  • Giff's design was influenced by the works of H.R. Giger, the visual artist known for his design for the Alien franchise.[2]
  • Since this character originates from outer space, the golden parts on his lower body and arms are inspired by insulation sheets used in artificial satellites.[3]
