Continuity and Placement[]

Plot[]

The film begins with Tokime sitting by the pier, where Shotaro had requested to meet with her and tell her of the life-story of his mentor Sokichi Narumi.

In elementary school, Shotaro was in attendance at concert when a spider-like monster attacked the performer. Sokichi rushed in to save the performer, which wowed Shotaro and ultimately inspired him to be like him. Shotaro met up with Sokichi at his detective agency and expressed his love for Futo, but was deemed too young for Sokichi to hire. One night, Shotaro was attacked by the Antlion Dopant, but was saved by Sokichi who transformed into Kamen Rider Skull and defeated monster. For years, Shotaro began pestering Sokichi to take him in but the latter refused to. Though Shotaro eventually went down a life of delinquency in high school, Sokichi recognized his heart for justice and finally agreed to hire Shotaro as his assistant after he graduated high school.

Several years later, Sokichi was called to a mission and left Shotaro behind. While Shotaro looked for his mentor, he stumbled upon a briefcase as well as a phone call from Shroud who asked Shotaro to deliver the briefcase to Sokichi. Shotaro is able to track Sokichi down to an island, where Sokichi had the mission to rescue a young boy from captivity. As the two entered the island, they are attacked by Saeko Sonozaki, who Sokichi as Skull engages in combat with. Shotaro runs off with the briefcase where he meets the boy of fate, but is left appalled by his emotionless and ill-remorse act of continuing to make Gaia Memories. In a fit of anger, Shotaro accidentally pushes the boy into Gaia Tower.

After Sokichi manages to escape from Saeko as a result of his Driver and Memory destroyed, he finds Shotaro and scolds him for leaving his post. Though Shotaro doesn't feel its worth saving the boy, Sokichi ultimately reminds him that despite so, Shotaro's strong heart of justice will eventually allow him to save the boy. Sokichi goes to Gaia Tower and enters Gaia Library where he meets the boy and names him Philip, after Philip Marlowe. After getting Philip out, Sokichi is then shot to death by Saeko and her men. Entrusted to finish the mission, Shotaro's mind merges with Phillip as they become Kamen Rider Double. They defeat Saeko and her attendent Nagi Oshima before leaving the island and returning to the agency.

As Shotaro finishes his story, he begins sobbing as he never stopped blaming himself for his mentor's death. After Shotaro passes out in Tokime's arms, Phillip arrives to finish telling the story. Although that night was indeed the worse night of their lives, it was also a new beginning of a fateful encounter, which Shotaro and Philip have dubbed "Begins Night". Philip concludes that Shotaro told Tokime this story because he felt obligated to as fellow holder of a Joker Memory, Gaia or Dopant.

Notes[]

  • Adapted from: Chapters 47-55
  • The official website has the film listed alternatively as Fuuto PI: The Movie (劇場版 風都探偵, Gekijō-ban Fūto Tantei).
  • The film's title is directly derived from the name of the arc that this film adapts from the manga, Portrait of s (sの肖像, Esu no Shōzō), though the film's title directly refers to Kamen Rider Skull instead of S.
  • The film is an animated retelling of the "Begins Night" event from the live-action TV show and is the first standalone adaptation of said arc, as previous depictions occurred in film crossovers with Riders from other series.
  • Koji Kikkawa, who portrayed Sokichi Narumi in the live-action Kamen Rider W metaseries, is involved in the film as the singer of the film's theme song, "Niau Otoko ni Nare".
  • Toei has categorized both this film and Kamen Rider Gotchard: Graduations as Winter Movies.[8]

Manga Differences[]

  • Both Melissa and the Spider Dopant, who previously appeared in Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider OOO & W Featuring Skull: Movie War Core, appear in the film in anime-only scenes.
  • Nagi Ooshima is a character exclusive to the anime and has a fight with Kamen Rider Double FangJoker towards the end of the island escape. In the original series, Double returned straight to the agency from the island with no fight having occurred in between.
