Eyecons (眼魂アイコン, Aikon) are eyeball-like devices used by the Riders from Kamen Rider Ghost. There are two types of Eyecons, one embodying heroic spirits called Ghost Eyecons (ゴースト眼魂アイコン, Gōsuto Aikon, lit. "Ghost Eye Souls"), and the other being sentient Gamma Eyecons (ガン眼魂アイコン, Ganma Aikon, lit. "Eye Devil Eye Souls").

The Eyecons originated from a system created by Edith, manifested through the power of the Great Eye. Through the separation of consciousness into Eyecons and the permanent preservation of the body in life-support capsules, a form of immortality could be achieved, which was utilized by the Gamma. These Eyecons were the original Gamma Eyecons.

Later, 15 heroic spirits based on their respective historical figures were chosen to be sealed in another type of Eyecons known as Ghost Eyecons; these Eyecons were compatible with a Ghost Driver, allowing one with a Driver to transform and utilize the powers of the heroic spirits.

Once the Great Eye left Earth, the Eyecon system no longer functioned and shut down, causing almost all Eyecons to cease to exist. The only known Eyecons which continue to exist are the Ghost Eyecons possessed by the Kamen Riders and transformation Gamma Eyecons, while the whereabouts of 71 Hero Eyecons following the dissolution of the Island of Eyecons remains unknown.

Design

A standard Eyecon is composed of the following parts:

  • Phantom Entrance (ファントムエントランス, Fantomu Entoransu): An entrance to the inside of the Eyecon, it is how Parka Ghosts are able to enter and exit the Eyecon. It is located at the top of the Eyecon, just below the Eyeconic Plate.
  • Spirit Harken (スピリットハーケン, Supiritto Hāken): The four semi-oval shaped arches placed diagonally at the outer surface of the Eyecon, it is what keeps the Eyecon in place when placed into the Ghost Driver or the Sunglasseslasher. The Spirit Harkens hold high-purity energy generated by the ghosts inside the Eycons, and ensures the Eyecon does not explode from the amount of energy.
  • Sclera Sphere (スクレラスフィア, Sukurera Sufia): The clear outer surface attached to the front of the Eyecon. It is a shield generator that wraps the Eyecon in a defensive shield that prevents damage to the Eyecon. The clear parts have excellent durability, and and almost all physical attacks will not scratch it.
  • Quad Iris (クアッドアイリス, Kuaddo Airisu) - The front black portion of the Eyecon, it is a monitor that displays the Eyecon's state, and indicates one of the four states (Standby, Startup, Transformation or Move Invocation) at a time.
  • Eyeconic Plate (アイコニックプレート, Aikonikku Purēto): The graphic seal placed on top of the Eyecon, it displays what Damashii is present inside of it. The Eeyconic Plate displays the Pantheon, or faceplate, the Rider will put on upon transformation.
  • Ghost Liberator (ゴーストリベレイター, Gōsuto Ribereitā): The button at the side of the Eyecon, pressing it activates the energy release system of the Eyecon. After pressing the Ghost Liberator, putting the Eyecon inside of the Ghost Driver will allow transformation.

Ghost Eyecons

Ghost 32

The 15 blank Ghost Eyecons

The Ghost Eyecons, upon possession, allows its holder to see and perceive ghostly creatures, such as the Gamma. By obtaining 15 Eyecons, the wielder of them is granted a wish of their desires.

Ghost Eyecons appear to have blank states, resembling generic eyeball when not used for transformations.

As revealed in the 13th episode, Ghost Eyecons have the power to possess people in a similar vein to the Gamma Eyecons.

The Ghost Eyecons have a Quad Iris (クアッドアイリス, Kuaddo Airisu), which cycles between four settings when the Ghost Liberator (ゴーストリベレイター, Gōsuto Ribereitā) button is pressed.

  1. Standby Time (待機時, Taiki-ji): the standard blank setting. Ghost's Eyecons have a default black, while Specter has blue, and Necrom has green. The odd one out of the set is Ghost's Mugen Eyecon, which is a rainbow.
  2. Startup Time (起動時, Kidō-ji): activates when pressing the Eyecon's right side, revealing a letter or a two-digit number. The odd one out of the set is Ghost's Mugen Eyecon, which instead reveals an infinity symbol.
  3. Transformation Time (変身時, Henshin-ji): activates when transforming, revealing an icon that is associated with the Ghost Eyecon's Damashii form's faceplate. Any Eyecon that falls under Necrom's control has a frame associated with the Ghost Eyecon's Damashii form surround Necrom's Various Goggle.
  4. Move Invocation Time (技発動時, Waza Hatsudō-ji): activates when using an Omega Drive finisher.

Gamma Eyecons

The Gamma Eyecons are sentient objects that also resemble eyeballs, with the addition of a hook that resembles optic nerves. They are usually summoned by Chikara Saionji, Alain, or anyone through a ritual.

Once a Gamma Eyecon crosses over into the physical world, it transforms into a Gamma Assault (眼魔アサルト, Ganma Asaruto) with its humanoid form referred to by TV-Asahi as the Primal Body (素体, Moto-tai).

The Gamma can gain a unique body of their own by bonding to an inanimate object. The Gamma's sole purpose is obtain Ghost Eyecons and can forcibly merge with the Parka Ghost of a Ghost Eyecon to become a Giant Gamma.

The Gamma Eyecons can possess people and can be exorcised from their victim's by the Ghost Eyecon-wielding Riders.

Based on Akari's research, it seems that the Gamma Eyecons are durable against any forms of destruction except Ghost/Specter's powers and a modified Shiranui formula. However, an individual who possesses great strength, like Adel, can crush a Gamma Eyecon using his bare hand.

The Gamma Eyecons can also be used to convey messages by means of visual projection.

Creation

Sennin explains that there are three conditions to create a Ghost Eyecon:

  1. It must manifest from an object connected to the spirit.
  2. It needs a person with any form of strong feelings/high emotional state or a connection to the spirit. Only sincere and genuine feelings will bring out the Eyecons. Any Gamma possession of the human will fail to bring out Eyecons.
  3. The item must be unsealed with an eye symbol gesture to bring the spirit and Eyecon into the mortal realm. An alternate step is by tricking humans with a strong emotional state to the spirit into sacrificing their lives in order to create the Ghost Eyecon.

As shown later on in the series, more powerful Eyecons can be created via other means. The Toucon Boost Eyecon was created by Ryu Tenkuji fusing his own spirit with Takeru's, while the Deep Specter Eyecon was created by Edith using power from the Gammaizers. Particularly strong emotions and feelings can result in the creation of highly powerful Eyecons, as evidenced by the Mugen, Sin Specter, and Yujou Burst Eyecons.

A Gamma Eyecon is created upon a Gamma's physical body entering a stasis capsule in the Gamma World. Gamma Eyecons bond with inanimate object to achieve their humanoid Empowered Gamma form. Upon defeat by a Kamen Rider, the Parka Ghost is forcibly jettisoned as it explodes along with the Gamma's Primal Body and Eyecon, with the Parka Ghost returning to the form of the inanimate object the Gamma had bonded with.

When a Gamma's Eyecon form is destroyed, the Gamma will either awaken back in their original body, or respawn in another Eyecon form. In some cases the original body may disintegrate into ashes, resulting in permanent death.

Variants of the Gamma Eyecon are known to exist, one of them allowing Jabel to transform using these Eyecons.

While the process is currently not detailed, it would appear that Igor has the ability to create Transformation Gamma Eyecons based on previously defeated Empowered Gamma, with the implication that he uses the items that the Empowered Gamma had bonded with to create them, due to him taking the scissors the Knife Gamma had dropped after his defeat by Ghost Himiko Damashii the episode before his usage of the Knife Gamma Eyecon.

It shows the letter G on its Startup Time setting, the Face Pantheon (フェイスパンテオン, Feisu Panteon) displaying Ghost's face on its Transformation Time setting, and a boot with energy surrounding it on its Move Invocation Time setting. This Eyecon was created from a blank Eyecon that Takeru's father had sent to him, which bonded with his soul after he was killed by the Katana Gamma.

In the Ghost Driver, it summons the Ore Ghost (オレゴースト, Ore Gōsuto, lit. "My Ghost") with the Persona Pantheon (ペルソナパンテオン, Perusona Panteon) to transform Ghost into Ore Damashii, which grants him the ability to hover short distances for either quick striking or evading enemy attacks. This form's compatible Gan Gun Saber modes are its Blade Mode and Naginata Mode.

The Ore Eyecon was temporarily destroyed when Takeru sustained a fatal attack from Gammaizer Gravity which seemingly condemned him to his final death, with the Eyecon shattering into seven pieces which were each claimed by one of his friends. The Ore Eyecon was restored alongside Takeru when the feelings of his friends connected to his spirit and allowed him to return from the eternal expanse.

The Ore Eyecon and Takeru's Driver both became unresponsive when Takeru was infected with the Pac-Man Virus.

It shows an infinity symbol on its Startup time setting, Ghost's Mugen Damashii face on its Transformation Time setting, and a rainbow spring-like boot with energy surrounding it on its Move Invocation Time setting. It was created when the feelings of Takeru's friends connected to his spirit and allowed him to return from the eternal expanse following what initially appeared to be his final death.

In the Ghost Driver, it summons the Mugen Ghost (ムゲンゴースト, Mugen Gōsuto) with the Persona Evolve (ペルソナエヴォルブ, Perusona Evorubu) to transform Ghost into Mugen Damashii.

The Deep Specter Ghost Eyecon (ディープスペクターゴースト眼魂, Dīpu Supekutā Gōsuto Aikon) is Kamen Rider Specter's upgraded Ghost Eyecon. Its only iris is a red-colored devilish iris, partially covered by an "eyelid", and its Eyecon code is the letter D.

In the Ghost Driver, it summons the Deep Specter Ghost (ディープスペクターゴースト, Dīpu Supekutā Gōsuto) with the Persona Abyssal (ペルソナアビサル, Perusona Abisaru) to transform Specter into Deep Specter.

Created by Edith, this Eyecon draws power from the 15 Gammaizers to give it incredible strength. Edith originally intended for it to be used by Takeru, however it was taken by Makoto instead. As shown in a failed attempt by Deep Specter, it is possible to use the power of this Eyecon to connect with the Gammaizers.

Since this Eyecon draws power from the Gammaizers, the Gammaizers created several clones of Makoto to counter this. The clones eventually merged into a singular being, who possessed a second Deep Specter Eyecon, which contained backups of the Gammaizers. This allowed the Gammaizers to regenerate after they were seemingly destroyed in episode 48.

The Sin Specter Ghost Eyecon (シンスペクターゴースト眼魂, Shin Supekutā Gōsuto Aikon) is Kamen Rider Specter's upgraded Ghost Eyecon. It is a remodel of the Mugen Ghost Eyecon. It shows the kanji for "Sin" (, Tsumi) on its Startup Time setting, Sin Specter's face on its Transformation Time setting, and a rainbow spring-like boot with energy surrounding it on its Move Invocation Time setting. It was created from Makoto's strong feelings of bearing his sins and wanting to make up for them. Just like how the Mugen Ghost Eyecon is based on the seven emotions, the Sin Specter Eyecon is based on the seven deadly sins.

"Yujoukaigan! Burst! Orera Burst! Yujou fight! Tomete miseru ze omae no tsumi o!"
―Transformation announcement[src]

The Yujou Burst Ghost Eyecon (友情バーストゴースト眼魂, Yūjou Bāsuto Gōsuto Aikon, lit. Friendship Burst Ghost Eyecon) is Kamen Rider Necrom's upgraded Ghost Eyecon. It is evolved from the Necrom Ghost Eyecon when Alain's feelings of friendship towards Makoto reaches its peak.

It is a redeco of the Toucon Boost Ghost Eyecon, down to having an almost identical announcement tune. Similar to said Eyecon, the Yujou Burst Eyecon only has a Transformation Time setting which shows Necrom's face with fiery details.

Extremer Driver (エクストリーマードライバー, Ekusutorīmā Doraibā)[1] is a mysterious belt used by Kamen Rider Extremer. It was created from Takeru Tenkuji's corpse, which becomes the Ultimate Eyecon (究極の眼魂, Kyūkyoku no Aikon)[2].

Gather! The 15 Eyecons!

The 15 Hero Eyecons

These Ghost Eyecons are based on fifteen legendary figures and can activate alternate Rider forms based on those individuals. All fifteen must be gathered together in order to grant the holder a single wish. They are originally sealed away in an object that pertains to that individual; once unsealed, the object is dissolved into spectral energy that forms into a Parka Ghost.

The Ghost Eyecons continue to function even after the Great Eye leaves Earth, though they cannot be used to grant a wish to the holder anymore.

All of them are voiced by Tomokazu Seki (関 智一, Seki Tomokazu).

The Musashi Ghost Eyecon (ムサシゴースト眼魂アイコン, Musashi Gōsuto Aikon) is one of the 15 Heroes' Ghost Eyecons, with its primary user being Kamen Rider Ghost. It shows the number 01 on its Startup Time setting, the Face Dual Wield (フェイスデュアルウィード, Feisu Dyuaru Wīdo) displaying a set of Japanese swords on its Transformation Time setting, and two swords spinning in a circle on its Move Invocation Time setting.

This form's compatible Gan Gun Saber mode is its Nitouryu Mode.

The Musashi Ghost was originally sealed within Takeru's pendant of Miyamoto Musashi's tsuba, given to him by his father prior to his death. Once freed, it entered Takeru's Ghost Driver, creating its Eyecon. It is heard to speak in episode 11

This Eyecon is also used by Specter and Necrom to assume Musashi Damashii in Kamen Rider Battle: Ganbarizing.

In the Ghost Driver, it summons the Robin Ghost (ロビンゴースト, Robin Gōsuto) with the Persona Archer (ペルソナアーチャー, Perusona Āchā) to transform Ghost into Robin Damashii, which grants him archery-like precision capabilities and illusionary-based powers. This form's compatible Gan Gun Saber mode is its Arrow Mode, formed by combining it with the Condor Denwor Ghost Gadget.

The Robin Ghost was originally sealed within Mari Shirase's authentic Robin Hood bow and arrow that she stole from Kōzō Kuratani, which the Ono Gamma tried to free by sacrificing Mari. Once freed by Ghost without needing to sacrifice Mari, it entered Takeru's Ghost Driver, creating its Eyecon.

This Eyecon is also used by Specter and Necrom to assume Robin Damashii in Kamen Rider Battle: Ganbarizing.

It shows the number 04 on its Startup Time setting, the Face Fall Apple (フェイスフォールアップル, Feisu Fōru Appuru) displaying the Euclidean vector and an apple on its Transformation Time setting, and a falling apple with four vectors pointing towards the apple on its Move Invocation Time setting.

This Eyecon both first appears in Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future and plays an important role in the finale of Kamen Rider Drive. As such, it is unknown what form of item the Newton Ghost was first sealed in, nor who created the Eyecon, as it was already in Eyecon form by the time Neo Shade had found it and the police confiscated it as evidence. Shinnosuke later gives the Eyecon to Yurusen during a stand off with Neo Shade's leader.

In the Ghost Driver, it summons the Newton Ghost (ニュートンゴースト, Nyūton Gōsuto) with the Persona Dynamics (ペルソナダイナミクス, Perusona Dainamikusu) to transform Ghost into Newton Damashii, which equips him with a pair of orb-like gloves that grant him gravity-based powers.

The Newton Eyecon was first used by Ghost to stop a chunk of the city from falling to the ground following the destruction of the Book Gamma. It was later stolen from him by Makoto Fukami as Kamen Rider Specter, but Takeru managed to recover it back from him in a Rider Kick clash.

This Eyecon is also used by Specter and Necrom to assume Newton Damashii in Kamen Rider Battle: Ganbarizing.

In the Ghost Driver, it summons the Billy the Kid Ghost (ビリー・ザ・キッドゴースト, Birī Za Kiddo Gōsuto) to transform Ghost into Billy the Kid Damashii, which grants him marksman-like fighting capabilities. This form's compatible Gan Gun Saber mode is its Rifle Mode, formed by combining it with the Bat Clock Ghost Gadget. Alternatively, Ghost can use the Gan Gun Saber in its Gun Mode while also using the Bat Clock's Gun Mode.

The Billy the Kid Ghost was originally sealed within Chikara Saionji's authentic Billy the Kid hat that he had given to a Western enthusiast. Once freed by Saionji, it was forcibly entered into Saionji's Ghost Driver-like device in his briefcase, creating its Eyecon. It was thanks to Onari and Akari tailing Saionji, with the monk attempting to confront the black-garbed man and tripping over a rolling chair as a result, that Ghost was able to obtain this Eyecon.

This Eyecon is also used by Specter and Necrom to assume Billy the Kid Damashii in Kamen Rider Battle: Ganbarizing.

71 Movie Ghost Eyecons

100 Eyecons

Eyecons used to create the Ultimate Eyecon.

For the summer movie of Kamen Rider Ghost, Toei organized a contest for Japanese residents to design and submit their own Ghost Eyecon designs based on one out of a list of 71 historical figures. The 71 winning designs were presented in a special brochure for the summer movie on August 6, 2016, with the names of these winners being credited in the end credits of the movie. Out of the 71 winners, 5 were chosen to receive the "Ghost Award", featuring an originally-made Ghost Eyecon.[5]

The winning designs for the contest can be seen here. The 71 Eyecons were later seen in full view during the end credits of the movie. Most of the props are simply previous Ghost or Legend Rider Eyecons with new label stickers on the top.

Behind The Scenes

Portrayal

The Parka Ghosts (stored in the Eyecons) are voiced by Tomokazu Seki (関 智一, Seki Tomokazu), who also voices the Gamma Eyecons.

Notes

  • The Ghost Eyecons' appearance is based on a homophonous pun on both "Eye" (アイ, Ai) and "Soul" (, Kon, In the Kan'on reading) and the English word "Icon".
  • Many of the known Ghost Eyecons are named after famous/infamous male figures in history. This may explain the inclusion of the Ore Ghost Eyecon, as "Ore" is considered to be a very masculine, if very informal, pronoun.
    • As a pronoun, "ore" can also be used as "my", which could mean the Ore Ghost Eyecon is Kamen Rider Ghost's personal Eyecon.
  • The Ghost Eyecons containing the souls of people from history and their eyeball-like design may refer to the phrase, "the eyes are the windows into the soul".
  • All non-personal Ghost Eyecons have transformation jingles with a slight rhyming scheme.
  • Despite having numbers, Eyecons are not collected in the numerical way they are organized in (such as Newton (4) and Nobunaga (12) being created prior to being obtained).
    • In addition, there are Eyecons that don't match the color flashes of the DX Ghost Driver (such as it flashing yellow with the turquoise Tutankhamun Eyecon or red with the sky blue Ikkyu Eyecon).
  • There is an error with several releases of the Ryoma Ghost Eyecon packaged with the DX Sunglasseslasher, where they have "08", Goemon's numbering, on their Startup Time settings.[6]
EX Eyecons

The EX Eyecons & EX Parka Ghosts

  • Scans of toy catalogues had predetermined that two Eyecons under the EX Eyecon Set would appear in the film Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive: Super Movie Wars Genesis, with their primary users being Kamen Riders Ghost and Specter. These two Ghosts were also planned to be released as part of the Ghost Change EX Set. However, they were canceled and replaced by an early debut of the Toucon Boost Ghost Eyecon and Ghost's Toucon Boost Damashii in the movie for reasons unknown at the current time. Thusly, these two canceled Eyecons' Startup Time, Standby Time Transformation Time and Move Invocation Time settings are completely unknown.
    • A scene in the film where Mach and Specter attempt to use the Raffaello and Michelangelo Eyecons to transform but to no avail could be a nod to this cancelled set of Eyecons. It could even be possible that the Raffaello and Michelangelo Eyecons were the ones planned to be released in this set.
  • The toy Ikkyu, Pythagoras and Showa rider Eyecons, specifically those bundled with issues of TV-kun, is the first time in the Phase 2 Heisei era of using lenticular imaging in collectable transformation devices.
  • If one looks very closely, the text on the Special Ore Eyecon's Move Invocation Time setting reads "Midnight Special The Knights Kishidan from Route 127 of Fairies".
  • The shapes of the "Renaissance Trio" Eyecons are the same as the Gamma Eyecons, and the Raffaello and Michelangelo Eyecons can be used by Gamma Superior Raffaello and Gamma Superior Michelangelo respectively in the same manner as Igor does in the TV series. However, the trio are classified as Ghost Eyecons, because the settings weren’t finalized when Super Movie Wars Genesis was shooting.[7]
  • Because Mugen Ghost Eyecon has its own sounds, Mugen Ghost Eyecon sounds can be used in DX Mega Ulorder.[8]
  • The Eyecons are first toy series with pre-programmed sounds within the DX toy belts to release toys for many of the settings, with one having yet to be made into toys.
Eyecon spelled Icon

Eyecon seen spelled as "Icon"

  • Despite being spelled "Eyecon" in numerous sources of official material, it is seen spelled as "Icon" on a chalkboard in at least episode 47.
  • The fact that the Ex-Aid Eyecon has the Heisei Rider Eyecon sound in the DX Ghost Driver is likely due to its design being similar to said Eyecon, thereby triggering the same sound. This is also possibly because the Ex-Aid Eyecon is the newest Eyecon and likely never had its unique sound be programmed into the Driver toy.
  • When used in Ganbarizing, the Ishinomori Ghost Eyecon does not summon an Ishinomori Ghost, and instead will change and summon a random Ghost. As such, there is no design for an Ishinomori Ghost or Ishinomori Damashii.
DX robin error

"Robin".

  • There is an error on the DX release of the Robin Hood Ghost Eyecon where the top sticker only has "Robin" rather than "Robin Hood". This error is present in all releases of the DX Eyecon but strangely fixed on non-DX versions of the Eyecon.
  • Aside from Ghost and Specter's usual Eyecons, the Yujou Burst Eyecon is the only Eyecon of Alain's own original possession that shouts out Kaigan in its transformation phase instead of Tengan, despite being an evolved version of an Eyecon that uses the latter.
    • This was also the only Ghost Eyecon to not release during its respective film's release. It was later announced in June 2021 that it would release in conjunction with Kamen Rider Specter × Blades.
  • Kanon Specter Eyecon's transformation sound reuses the original transformation sound of Special Ore Ghost Eyecon.
  • Given its origin in the movie as an evolved Eyecon, the DX Yujou Burst Eyecon appropriately triggers the same Ghost Driver standby loop as the original Necrom Eyecon.
