Transformation Gears

A collage of transformation gears throughout the Kamen Rider Series.

The items listed here are equipment used by Kamen Riders to transform. They often come in the form of belts. Other forms of transformation gear are wrist braces and weapons.

Overview[]

Showa transformation gear almost always consists of solely a belt that is activated by the Rider doing a pose and saying "Henshin" (変身 lit. "transform").

On the other hand, the transformation gear of Heisei (and to an extent, Reiwa) Riders almost always consists of multiple pieces; a belt and a smaller object that either has to be inserted into the belt or have it interact with the belt in another way. After this is done, the transformation can be completed. Examples of these smaller objects are cards, coins, and mobile phones. Especially in Heisei Series Phase 2, these smaller objects are also used to activate form changes. The term “Driver” was first used in Kamen Rider Faiz and eventually became a universal term for Rider Belts in the later half of the Heisei era and beyond.

Another key difference between both eras is that Riders from the Showa Era always have their belts be a part of their (normally cyborg) bodies. While this is also a fact for some Heisei Kamen Riders, most notably Kuuga and Agito, the majority of Heisei (and all of Reiwa) transformation gear is separate from their owner's body. Therefore, most Heisei Riders first need to equip their gear before being able to transform. In some cases, Heisei transformation gear can also be used by multiple users as opposed being bound to a single user, like the Faiz, Kaixa, and Delta Belts and the Ixa System. Later Heisei and Reiwa installments of the franchise introduced in-story biometric or various other electronic safeguards to prevent malicious people from using a hero’s belt.

While most Showa Riders were superpowered cyborgs who could activate their full set of abilities through their belts, a majority of modern Riders gain powers from the belt itself or its accompanying trinkets, with the belt either generating a suit or, less commonly, physically altering the user's body. Additionally, almost all Showa Riders are solely powered by purely science fiction concepts, whereas many Heisei and Reiwa series introduce fantasy concepts such as magic. Sometimes both types are mixed for one Rider, or different Riders representing each will appear in the same series.

Notes[]

  • As noted in a net movie segment, G-Series Riders and V-1 are the only Riders who do not technically transform, instead having to equip their armor piece by piece, and so are the only Riders without true transformation gear.
    • Although Ryo Ashihara does not wear it until after his transformation, Kamen Riders Gills' belt, the Meta Factor, is considered a transformation belt.
    • Strangely, Riderman is not included among these Riders, despite similarly assuming his Rider form by wearing his Riderman suit and activating his Cassette Arms, rather than use a specific Transformation Gear.
  • Since Kamen Rider Decade’s Decadriver, all the succeeding transformation belts (with some exceptions such as the Mage's Belt and the A.I.M.S. Shotriser) have the name “Driver,” though the first use of the term was several years prior with the Faiz Driver.
    • Oddly enough though, Tsukasa Kadoya/Kamen Rider Decade himself refers to his transformation belt as a "Buckle", rather than "Driver". [Reunion: Project Agito]
