The Checkmate Four (チェックメイト・フォー, Chekkumeito Fō) are the four most powerful members of the Fangire race, hence their authority as absolute rulers. The King (キング, Kingu) being their leader, the Queen (クイーン, Kuīn) acts as his consort, while the the Rook (ルーク, Rūk) and Bishop (ビショップ, Bishoppu) serve as chief enforcers.
Once a member of the Checkmate Four approaches death, their powers are transferred at some point into another Fangire, allowing them to fill in as a successor. When the transfer is completed, these Fangires receive a special birthmark resembling a chess piece, said pieces dependent on the position they are to succeed.
While inheritors for the position of King is based on lineage, the three other positions are randomly handed among Fangires, with it being unclear whether there any required qualifications for these inheritance.
Around the year 1986, the Checkmate Four lost their King and Queen from Otoya Kurenai's actions, allowing Taiga Nobori and Mio Suzuki to inherit the positions in 2008.

Notes[]
- Despite the Checkmate Four's theme of chess pieces, they do not have a position for the Knight and Pawn pieces, with it instead being a title bestowed upon the twin brothers who crafted Saga, Dark Kiva, and Kiva.
