"We were created by humans. But they made us too powerful for their own good. Soon, the humans will understand just how helpless they truly are. Let us refer to this day with a word they seem to have a fondness for... This is our revolution."
Heart addressing his fellow Roidmudes on the eve of the Global Freeze.[src]

The Roidmudes (ロイミュード, Roimyūdo), also called Mechanical Life Forms (機械生命体, Kikai Seimeitai) by the public, are the antagonists of Kamen Rider Drive. They are a race of 108 artificial life forms created by Dr. Tenjuro Banno as unique androids that were capable of 'evolving' to become more like humans. However, when their development had hit a wall, Banno asked his friend Krim Steinbelt for help. Steinbelt gave him the prototype Core Driviars to continue their evolution, until Banno's dark secret on using a lethal experiment for his creation was discovered by Krim, causing the two inventors' partnership to break apart. This led Banno to plan to steal a piece of Krim's equipment - the mind transfer device - without Krim knowing, in order to further his sinister plan and to finalize his creations. Unfortunately, because of Banno's cause on awakened Roidmudes as a finalized sentient, it caused them to start their plot to destroy the world, evolving by synchronizing with human emotions and stealing the best physical attributes of human beings.

Origins[]

The chip.

Banno's 'evil' chip

According to Heart, Roidmudes are originally meant to be created for world peace, having human emotions like 072 did, for example. However, Banno encountered trouble during his research and ultimately made the Roidmudes based on the negative emotions of humanity, seeking to dominate the world instead. Heart, while fully aware of this, wants to dominate the world for his own purposes.

Banno inserted chips to cause the Roidmudes to turn evil and later had Roidmude 004 to create a similar chip to corrupt Krim Steinbelt, who temporarily goes haywire during Surprise Future.

Overview[]

The Roidmudes are capable of slowing down time itself to a crawl. This is known as the Heavy Acceleration phenomenon, which slows down everything in it except for Roidmudes, and Kamen Rider Drive and his equipment. They are covered by a membrane similar to the human cerebral cortex that allows them to disguise themselves, as well as camouflaging the particles emitted from the Heavy Acceleration phenomenon that the Roidmudes are so fond of exploiting.

They are given numbers to distinguish themselves from each other (and are pronounced individually; i.e., 029 is Zero-Two-Nine), to which literally ties into their life, functioning like souls. If these numbers, called Cores, are destroyed, the Roidmude is dead permanently, but so long as the Core is still around, a Roidmude can respawn after some time and are given a Viral Core for a new body.

Among the 108, there are three types of Plain Roidmudes: Cobra Types, Spider Types, and Bat Types. There is also a fourth Human Type, which Protozero and Cyberoid ZZZ adhere to.

Evolution[]

Main article: Advanced Roidmudes

Plain Roidmudes evolve using dark versions of the Shift Cars called Viral Cores, which evolve the specific type of Plain Roidmude tied to that Viral Core into a Evolution State (進化態, Shinka Tai). One way to achieve this without multiple usages of Viral Cores is through forming a pact with human and helping them achieve the human's desires. After their transformation is stable enough however, the Roidmudes won't hold back to kill their host.

Like the Inves, If a Roidmude uses more than one Viral Core at one time (three for Plain, and two for Advanced), they will change into a bigger and more powerful form based on their animal motifs known as a Roidmude Berserk Body, but at the cost of their intelligence.

If a Roidmude's certain emotion intensifies and exceeds the limit, the Roidmude can evolve into a golden form known as their Over-Evolved State (超進化態, Chō Shinka Tai). Their ultimate goal is to find the Promised Number, a gathering of four Roidmudes who have achieved their Over-Evolved form, and then take over the world by inducing a permanent Global Freeze.

A backup plan was devised by the future Roidmude 108, who hails from a Roidmude-dominated future, but wishes to create the permanent Global Freeze that never occurred in his future. By merging with his past self, a paradox is created with Roidmude 108 skipping his Advanced form altogether and jumping straight into a Over-Evolved State, capable of inducing a permanent Global Freeze alone.

Variants[]

Medic had her own set of remodeled Roidmudes called Reaper Legion whose mission is to eliminate unruly and/or rogue Roidmudes. This division was made after Mashin Chaser was decommissioned due to Medic's brainwashing altering his base program to defend the Roidmudes. These Roidmudes are given enhanced combat capabilities in addition to cockroach-like attributes. Their operation was made in secrecy from the knowledge of the other superior Roidmudes. These are still part of the numbered Roidmudes.

A new model of the Viral Cores called Neo Viral Core was introduced, which allowed a Roidmude to evolve by synchronizing and fusing with humans that have darker hearts. Once the fusion was initiated, the Roidmude would act as the human's advisor, speaking through their chest once their number is visible. These Neo Viral Cores were created and developed by Roidmude 001.

Number Discrepancy[]

While there were supposedly only 108 Roidmudes in existence, two Roidmudes were made alongside the 108, both being a Human Type Roidmude, with one of them being able to be a new body for its user, and the other serving as the basis for all Roidmudes, labeled as 000, who would be called Protozero.

Numberless Roidmudes

The Plain Roidmudes (Lost Number) appeared in Kamen Rider Zi-O.

Plain Roidmudes (Lost Number) were created by Kamen Rider Lupin, but they lacked cores and were only imitations. A similar Roidmude army was deployed during the Megahex Invasion by Megahex, who took combat data based on the original numbered Roidmudes. Also the same forces, led by Chase, are summoned from Another Worlds by Swartz/Another Decade.

In a dystopian, alternate future, the Roidmudes manage to defeat humanity, possessing numberless Roidmudes with their plates marked "---". These variants are stronger than a Plain Roidmude (Lost Number) and are capable of giving Mach and M16 rifle-equipped police force a one-sided fight. Deadheat Mach and Super Dead Heat Drive were able to defeat these Roidmudes after they enter the Dead Zone. Upon exiting out of the Dead Zone, Super Dead Heat Drive is overwhelmed by a single Roidmude. This last Roidmude was destroyed by being smashed by a truck through Kamen Rider Ghost Newton Damashii.

History[]

Origin[]

The Roidmudes were originally conceptualized by Dr. Banno. The Doctor asked for help from his partner, Krim Steinbelt, to build the Core Driviars for the Roidmudes. Against his better senses, Krim agreed, but unfortunately he was right to be wary. The Roidmudes killed both Banno and Krim, and unleashed the Global Freeze upon the world.

Global Freeze[]

The Roidmudes would've taken over the world already, if not for the mysterious warrior known as Protodrive, who worked with Krim (whose consciousness was transferred into a belt) to stop the Roidmudes. Protodrive seemed to have lost his life fighting the Roidmudes, but Krim survived and was able to refine the equipment that would later become his successor, Drive's. Protodrive was later drafted and refitted to become Mashin Chaser.

Drive[]

The Roidmudes continued to spread havoc throughout the world. By December, however, international activity started decreasing as the executives made their way to Tokyo. While Kamen Riders Drive, Mach and Protodrive/Chaser were created to combat these threats, some like 001 had infiltrated the national defense system, using it to keep an eye on the police forces to destroy them from the inside as well as removing the Kamen Rider threats.

Shocker[]

Assuming the form of the late Shocker scientist Dr. Dee, whom had perished in an accident at his laboratory 40 years prior, Roidmude 089 became the figurehead of an alliance between the Roidmudes and the remnant terrorist organization; while maintaining contact with the executive Roidmudes, he followed the Great Leader of Shocker. Through finishing Dr. Dee's concept for a History Modifying Machine, 089 oversaw its test run which connected the Roidmude's world to another which provided an opportunity to extend the alliance to the native Kibaoni Army CorpsIcon-crosswiki, represented by Kyuemon IzayoiIcon-crosswiki. Seeking to collect the Power of FearIcon-crosswiki, Izayoi summoned the Yokai BuruburuIcon-crosswiki to harvest it in the new world.

Also crossing over, however, were the Shuriken Sentai NinningerIcon-crosswiki, a team of five warriors who opposed the YokaiIcon-crosswiki. Though initially mistaken for Roidmudes by Drive, the ninjas gained his trust by defeating Buruburu. While Kyuemon departed to his own reality, content with the Fear he had gathered, 089 retained the Sealing ShurikenIcon-crosswiki, corrupted by Gengetsu KibaoniIcon-crosswiki, left behind by Burburu, which he used to become the Shocker Buruburu. Discovering that the History Modifying Machine threatened to erase the transdimensional immigrants, Drive and Mach joined with the Ninningers in a campaign which saw the demise of Roidmudes 057, 076, Roidmude 016, and ultimately 089 himself. The destruction of Shocker Buruburu severed the Roidmudes' ties with Shocker while negating the effects of the History Modifying Machine, returning the Ninningers to their home dimension. However, Shocker planned to unleash their completed History Modifying Machine. [Shuriken Sentai Ninninger Vs. Kamen Rider Drive Spring Vacation One-Hour Combining Special]

Soon after, 102 was intercepted by Kamen Rider Drive, who easily terminated the Roidmude. Almost immediately following this, Shocker unleashed their completed History Modifying Machine upon the world, altering the timeline to one which saw Earth dominated by the organization. In his alternative history, the Special Investigation Unit was attached to Shocker, with the Shocker Rider Drive hunting down rebel Kamen Riders as opposed to Roidmudes. The Roidmudes did continue to exist in some form, as evidenced by the presence of Mashin Chaser, who attempted to interfere with the Rider Grand Prix on his Ride Chaser only to be warded off by Kamen Rider Black RX and the Tridoron. In any case, however, this timeline was negated when the Rider Robo was destroyed by Shurikenjin TridoronIcon-crosswiki, restoring history to its proper course. [Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3]

Roidmude plus Human[]

Created by Roidmude 001, the Neo Viral Core allowed Roidmudes to achieve stronger Fused Evolution States by fusing with humans. The first such combination was Roidmude 007, who became the Sword Roidmude after fusing with criminal Hajime Taga on the wounded officer Akira Hayase. This incident forced Shinnosuke Tomari to expose his identity as Kamen Rider Drive to the public. [Why Has a New Battle Started?] Despite being separated by Kamen Rider Drive, the Sword Roidmude and Taga overwhelmed both him and Kamen Rider Mach before attempting to kill Kiriko. However, Chase arrived used his own Mach Driver Honoh and Signal Bike to become Kamen Rider Chaser, using his new powers to remove Taga from the Roidmude 007 before terminating the latter. [Where is Chaser Going?]

Forming a symbiosis with Reiko Nishihori, daughter of arrested criminal psychologist Koya Nishihori, 050 became the Seeker Roidmude. Going by the pseudonym "Yoriko Soma", Reiko cooperated with the Roidmude as it used his powers to look for humans compatible with Neo Viral Cores, though Reiko's true objective was to have Go destroy the Roidmude, killing her in the process and damning him as a murderer. However, Shinnosuke discovered her true identity and terminated 050 after separating them, arresting her in sequence. [What's Go Shijima's Reason to Fight?] [Why Were the Families Targeted?]

Through merging with Itsuro Negishi, an armed robber who was assumed to have killed Eisuke Tomari during a bank heist 12 years prior, 067 became the Open Roidmude. [What Really Happened to the Robbery Event?] Open was defeated by Chaser and Drive Type Formula, removing Negishi from 067. Arresting Negishi, Shinnosuke found that he was one of several victims of brainwashing as evidenced by a snowflake-shaped scar by his ear and learns the truth behind his father's death. [Who Reveals the Real Criminal?]

Coming to realize that his father may have been murdered by a Roidmude instead, Shinnosuke confronted National Bureau of Defense secretary "Soichi Makage", who revealed himself as Roidmude 001. Conceding that the elder Tomari had been onto his infiltration of the government, 001 noted that he was immune to his attempt to erase his memory, with the resulting emotion of humiliation evolving 001 into Freeze. [Why Did the Important Memories Disappear?]

Realizing 001's method of manipulating the police, an antidote was concocted by Rinna Sawagami, with Genpachiro Otta being the first to be cured of the affliction. Engaging Freeze again, Drive seemingly succeeded in defeating him, only for 001's Core to immediately reform his body, with his intense humiliation bringing forth his Over-Evolved State, the power of which was proven as he effortlessly landed a mortal blow against Shinnosuke and Mr. Belt. [What is Waiting At the End of Evolution?]

Meanwhile, Go Shijima, who had seemingly been compelled to follow the Roidmudes, was confronted by Chase. Go, however, revealed that his allegiance was a ruse to acquire the tablet held by Brain; the tablet contained the memories of his late father: the Roidmudes' creator, Tenjuro Banno. With Mr. Belt acting as a life support system for the wounded Shinnosuke, Rinna devised a plan to revive him with the help of the Shift Cars, including the newly created Shift Tridoron. This operation succeeded, with Drive using the new Shift Car to assume the form of Type Tridoron, which proved powerful enough to destroy the Over-Evolved Freeze. Upon his death, however, Freeze revealed to Shinnosuke that he was not the one who killed his father. [Who Claimed the Life of Shinnosuke Tomari?]

In reality, Eisuke Tomari's murderer was his colleague Mitsuhide Nira, who had grown jealous of him. Now manager of the First Investigation Divison of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, Nira made a pact with Roidmude 106 to become the Thief Roidmude in order to destroy the evidence of his crime. Nira was, however, too late to act before being exposed by Shinnosuke, who separated them and terminated 106. Retrieving Nira, Brain made his own pact with the human which, as well as granting him the form of Thief, provided the emotion of jealousy which attained his Over-Evolved State. [Who Claimed the Life of Eisuke Tomari?]

Surprise Future[]

On August 5, 2015, Kamen Rider Dark Drive, driving the NEXTridoron, arrived on this date from twenty years into the future via the Time Road, bringing his auxiliary Shift Cars which became Future Roidmudes by possessing vehicles. [Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future]

On August 6, Shinnosuke was intercepting a Roidmude when he was met by what appeared to be his future son, "Eiji Tomari", who tries to stop him from destroying it only for Mr. Belt to go berserk, with the resulting spasm from Drive causing collateral damage. Declared responsible by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, Shinnosuke was only saved from execution by the young man from the future, eluding Kamen Rider Dark Drive along the way. [Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future]

On August 7, Eiji was seemingly killed by Dark Drive. While terminating the Future Roidmudes alongside Mach and Chaser, Drive was forced to destroy the Drive Driver as he risked going berserk again. Ultimately, it was revealed that "Eiji Tomari" and Dark Drive, appearing separately due to its auto-pilot function, were actually one and the same, Roidmude 108. [Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future]

On August 8, Shinnosuke, through a note left behind by Mr. Belt, discovers the First Drive Pit where he found the Proto Tridoron, making use of it and the Tridoron Key in the fight against Dark Drive and his Roidmudes, receiving assistance from the police once Shinji Koba was convinced of his innocence. In addition, one Future Roidmude met its end at hands of the mysterious Kamen Rider Ghost Newton Damashii, who disappeared as quickly as he came. The Paradox Roidmude, however, achieved the Supreme Evolved by releasing and combining with his 2015 self, beginning a new Global Freeze. Ultimately, the day was saved when Drive used the Tridoron Key and the future Drive Driver left behind by Dark Drive to revive Mr. Belt and, with Eiji's Shift Car, used the power of Type Special to destroy Paradox. The Promised Number[]

Assuming the form of the late psychiatrist Shoko Hazama, 099 became Angel, achieving her own Over-Evolved State. By developing a special feather that enabled a Roidmude to unlock the full potential of their human emotions, she convinced several others of her kind to rebel against Heart's leadership and join her side. Angel also presented Chase with a feather as well, which made him feel emotions like a normal human for the first time, and the Rhino Super Viral Core, which empowers his Mashin Chaser form in a state similar to the Roidmudes' Over-Evolved State.

Meanwhile, the reset 051's body was restored and disguised as robber Toshio Miwa, eventually being confronted by Kamen Rider Chaser. He wounded a young girl before Angel struck his gun using her feather before he fled. 051 battled Chase again, only to be destroyed by Super Mashin Chaser's finisher. Assuming the same disguise, 077 had become involved in serial incidents related to Gaia Memories. Attempting to use the Beast Memory on himself, he collapsed on the border between the Tokyo and Futo prefectures, creating a conflict of jurisdictions between the police of both cities. After awakening, he used the Beast Memory again, this time managing to transform himself into the Beast Dopant, but soon after, both he and the Beast Memory were destroyed by the combined efforts of Kamen Riders Drive, Mach and Accel.

It later became apparent that Angel's true objective was to use her feathers to overload the minds of Roidmudes and humans alike to a state of complacent joy for eternity. Assisted by Drive and Mach, Chase pursued Angel and eventually destroyed her in order to stop her plans and free the core of several other Roidmudes she captured in order to empower herself, including Heart, despite knowing that by opposing her, he would lose his newfound emotions. [Drive Saga: Kamen Rider Chaser]

A lone member of the Reaper Legion, Roidmude 100's goal was to hunt 100 different kinds of weapons and learn 100 combat techniques. During this quest, 100 robbed Zoruku Tojo, nuisance to the Special Investigation Unit, of his Lupin Gunner and so began posing as Kamen Rider Lupin, with the Lupin Gunner granting 100 the ability to summon Core-less Roidmudes. 100 taunted Shinnosuke and the Special Investigations Unit until Shinnosuke revealed his true identity during his 100th weapon theft (a historical katana from a museum) by revealing that the real Lupin had returned the "Kamen Rider" title to him, something that the impostor forgotten. After Zoruku Tojo regains the Lupin Gunner, he assists the Kamen Riders in defeating Roidmude 100. 100 did, however, succeed in mortally wounding Zoruku Tojo, causing his Core to disintegrate soon after. In the wake of Lupin's demise, the Lupin Gunner and Viral Core were recovered by the Special Investigation Unit. [Type LUPIN: ~Lupin, The Last Challenge~]

Extinction[]

Thanks to the Kamen Riders and other forces, the Roidmudes as a species are on the verge of dying off, with Heart being the last of his kind. [Why Must They Fight?] Eventually, Heart dies due to being mortally wounded by the Sigma Circular, making the entire Roidmude race fully extinct. [Who Will You Entrust the Future to, My Friend?]

    Notes[]

    • All of the Roidmudes (except the Paradox Roidmude) are designed by Takayuki Takeya.
    • The first three Viral Cores are associated with three notable monsters of the original Kamen Rider series: Man Spider (the first monster), Bat Man (the second monster), and Cobra Man (the first monster to have an upgraded/revived form)
    • Roidmude Berserk Bodies are based on their respective Viral Cores.
    • The Plain Roidmudes' ability to shoot bullets out of their fingertips is similar to Deneb from Kamen Rider Den-O.
    • The name Roidmude comes from combination of the words "Android" and "Mutant", with the "to" kana being made into a "do" kana.
    • The pact evolution path is similar to the way Yummies from Kamen Rider OOO work, where they drive a person's desire into overdrive, and get stronger from their host's desire.
    • The Roidmudes are an inversion of the usual concept of monsters from Kamen Rider. Where the franchise usually has the heroes gain the powers of the monsters they fight and rebel against them for good, it is the Roidmudes who went against their creators and used their powers for evil instead of helping humanity like they were intended to.
    • The three initial Roidmudes' creation and revolution during 1999 is coincidentally based on Nostradamus' prediction of apocalypse by the "King of Terror" Angolmois. Surprisingly, their creation could also have meant the end of humanity, as they desire to replace them as the dominant species on Earth.
      • The year 1999 is also similarly the same year where Worms arrived to Earth in Kamen Rider Kabuto's timeline.
        • This is similarly furthered where both Worms (in both Kamen Rider Kabuto and Kamen Rider Decade) and Roidmudes used their human disguise to infiltrate military forces from inside either to gain control or destroy them.
    • The number of primary Roidmudes is based on the 108 desires that tempt humanity away from Nirvana in Buddhism.
    • The Roidmudes' head design might be a reference to Shotaro Ishinomori's manga creation Skull Man.
    • The Roidmudes are similar to their predecessor monster group in many ways.
      • Both Plain Roidmudes and the Elementary Inves are categorized in a certain way (Roidmudes by body type, Elementary Inves by color and facial designs), as well as a certain aspect of the show (Plain Roidmudes referencing the first Kamen Rider's first three enemies, Elementary Inves by sharing the same color/region on the three first main Armored Riders)
      • Both groups are also able to evolve into a stronger form in a certain way (Roidmudes via learning and absorbing different emotions, Inves by devouring Lockseeds).
      • Both groups can also change into a Berserk Body.
      • Both have had a human use their powers with some differences (Roidmudes with Fusion Evolution, Inves with Category H Inves).
      • Both have had a mecha counterpart in Movie War Full Throttle.
