Monsters are the main antagonists in every incarnation of Kamen Rider, and are sometimes the source of their powers. Whether they are controlled by evil organizations, attack humans to feed off them or become more powerful or are malicious creatures that wish to take over the world, they oppose the Kamen Riders. Oftentimes using the powers of the very monsters they fight against, Riders battle these monsters to protect the people.

Terminology[]

Kaijū (怪獣, kaijū) is a Japanese word that literally translates to "strange creature," and is used to refer to a genre of tokusatsu entertainment. Kaiju films usually showcase monsters of any form, usually attacking a major Japanese city or engaging another (or multiple) monster(s) in battle.

Related terms include kaijū eiga (怪獣映画, kaijū eiga, monster movie), a film featuring giant monsters or a single monster; kaijin (怪人 referring to roughly humanoid monsters); and daikaiju (大怪獣, daikaijū, giant kaiju), specifically meaning the larger variety of monsters.

In Kamen Rider, official media almost always use the term "kaijin", even if it does fit neither of the humanoid, nor monstruous aspect of a non-Rider super-hero or super-villain.
