This article is about a group of individuals in Kamen Rider Wizard.

Gates (ゲート, Gēto) are humans with magical potential.

Overview[]

Whenever a Gate gives into despair, they create a monster called a Phantom, it would begin to tear down the host's Underworld, the subconscious of the host. The host's body will gradually crack and shatter into pieces resulting in their death, allowing the Phantom to manifest into the real world. Thus, they are pursued by the Greater Phantoms who seek to create more of their kind. Able to assume its host's form, the Phantom proceeds to seek out more Gates and place them deep in despair to repeat the cycle. Phantom will look for Gate's "spiritual pillar" (心の支え, Kokoro no Sasae), and then try every possible way to launch a mental attack on the target, either directly threatening death or destroying the most important person/item the Gate holds dear.

For Wizard or Beast to stop the sacrifice, they must use an Engage Wizard Ring to remove the feelings of despair and prevent their Inner Phantom from destroying the host's Underworld by destroying the Inner Phantom, resulting in the human host returning back to normal. As their Inner Phantom destroyed, they are no longer Gates and will not be the target anymore. If a Gate is able to find hope and sudbued the Phantom from despair within themselves, this will leave the Gate with the ability to perform magic and, in essence, becoming a Kamen Rider.

Another way for a Gate to avoid Phantom hunting is to move outside of Tokyo, Japan. This is because due to the rituals of The Sabbath, places outside of Tokyo will not be affected. Some Gates therefore chose to go abroad or live with distant relatives.
