Bilgenia (ビルゲニア, Birugenia) is a character in Kamen Rider Black Sun. He serves Shinichi Donami as the Ancient Armored Fish Kaijin (古代甲冑魚怪人, Kodai Katchū-gyo Kaijin).
History[]
Past life[]
Bilgenia was a prominent member of the Gorgom movement back in the 1970s. He accompanied Darom, Bishum and Baraom when the latter three attempted to negotiate with Michinosuke Donami regarding the equal treatment of the Kaijin race. Despite having abducted the Prime Minister's grandson Shinichi Donami earlier, Darom was still pressured into surrendering the Creation King to the government. Bilgenia massacred all of Michinosuke's guards and pleaded with Darom to kill Michinosuke then and there, but his words fell on deaf ears as he was restrained by Bishum and Baraom. Dissatisfied with the outcome, Bilgenia stole the Creation King, took the Satansaber, and formed a splinter faction alongside Yukari Shinjo, so that the Kaijin lord could be spared the undesirable fate.
Due to Shinichi's eavesdropping, Bilgenia learned of Yukari's scheme to slay the Creation King. He personally pursued the woman and killed her right in front of Kotaro's eyes. At the same time, the splinter faction was found by Darom's men, who had become allies to the government, resulting in Bilgenia's capture and imprisonment alongside Nobuhiko.
Some time later, when Shinichi had grown up and was intending to begin a political career, he visited Bilgenia and Nobuhiko's cell, asking whether or not one of them wished to be his personal enforcer. Bilgenia agreed, even biting his tongue off to demonstrate his dedication. On one of his missions with the politician, Bilgenia helped the latter locate Oliver Johnson and subsequently one half of the Kingstone. Under orders from Shinichi, he murdered his former Gorgom companion, whose son witnessed the entire event.
Fighting for a new Creation King[]
By 2022, the Gorgom movement had already been absorbed into the government as the Gorgom Party, with the Creation King's capabilities decreasing over time. Bilgenia still worked as the strongman for Shinichi, and was tasked with finding the remaining half of the Kingstone, so that a new Creation King could be created in place of the then - current impotent one. To that end, he sent the Spider Kaijin after a young activist, Aoi Izumi, but the girl was protected by Kotaro.
Bilgenia managed to find Aoi's parents, who had been wanted by Gorgom for quite some time. While interrogating the couple for information, he found a film reel which detailed Michinosuke's past involvement in conducting Kaijin experiments on human. Seeing that he could take advantage of Aoi's family to lure her out, Bilgenia first turned Aoi's father into the Crab Kaijin and set him free to find his daughter. This plan, however, was thwarted by one member of his own race - Kujira.
He then turned to Nick, promising to transform the young man into a Kaijin should he bring Aoi to him. Nick fell for the trap and was double - crossed, resulting in Bilgenia's forcibly turning Aoi into the Mantis Kaijin. When Kotaro found out about this, he viciously beat up Bilgenia as Kamen Rider Black Sun, slicing off one of the latter's arms in the process. Before being killed, he was saved by Bishum, who also abducted Aoi, being brought back to the headquarters with the Kingstone in hand.
Although the High Priests had the full Kingstone in their possession thanks to Bilgenia's efforts, none of them were able to use it to become the new Creation King. Concurrently, Kotaro and Nobuhiko assaulted their building to find Aoi, with the former actually managing to rip out the heart of the Kaijin lord. In the ensuing chaos, Aoi escaped from the compound with the Kingstone, rendering Bilgenia's work moot.
Nobuhiko, due to a combination of Shinichi's actions and unexpected circumstances, grew discontented with humanity and planned to overthrow the Gorgom Party, wishing to turn Kaijins into a master race. Although Bilgenia showed support for the new cause, he was humiliated and cast out of the organization, due to old hatreds with Nobuhiko. Coming back to report the acts of treachery witnessed to Shinichi, Bilgenia was roughed up for his failures and commanded to retrieve the Kingstone from Aoi.
Bilgenia was unable to defeat Aoi, so he resolved to follow her around, which brought him to professor Soichiro Akizuki in a nursing home. Here, he learned the truth about the Creation King from the professor: It was nothing more than a government project meant to mass produce Kaijin weapons, thereby strengthening the military power of the nation. This prompted him to give Aoi the incriminating film reel found earlier, so that the girl could have hard evidence when exposing the Donamis before the United Nations.
Aoi began her broadcast, revealing to the world the crimes against humanity committed by Michinosuke and Shinichi, using the film reel as proof. A hit squad was sent to silence her, but before any harm could be done, Bilgenia stood up to them and, after a grueling battle, managed to kill them all, ensuring that Aoi's video call would go on uninterrupted. This last stand, however, was also where Bilgenia met his end, as he died standing up defending Aoi from her assailants. The remains of his Satansaber would later be used by the girl, to permanently slay the new Creation King.
Personality[]
During his time with the Gorgom movement in the 1970s, Bilgenia seemed to earnestly believe in their cause of freeing Kaijins from oppression and marginalism. Unlike Darom, who was willing to bend his knees for his race, Bilgenia resolutely refused to compromise and subject the Creation King to the fate of being used by humans. This rigorous attitude motivated him to steal and hide the Kaijin lord away, as he would allow no harm done to it. Upon discovering Yukari's plot to kill the Creation King, Bilgenia wasted no time disposing of her, signifying his dedication to his master. In spite of this, his time as a prisoner appeared to have loosened this overzealous way of thinking somewhat, if only out of self - interest, as he unhesitatingly agreed to become Shinichi's muscle once the chance offered itself.
As Shinichi's personal enforcer, Bilgenia was sadistic, bloodthirsty and cruel. He had a penchance for torture, whether to get information or simply out of his own amusement. This was shown when he violently beat up Aoi's parents for intel on the Kingstone, or when he transformed Aoi into a Kaijin against her will and forced her mother to watch before killing her in cold blood. Even his old companions were not spared this callousness, as Bilgenia showed no problem thrashing Oliver Johnson to death when his son was watching. Additionally, he also had a manipulative streak, having used Nick's desire to become a Kaijin to trick him into bringing Aoi straight to Gorgom's men, casually tossing the boy aside once his usefulness ran out. Bilgenia's sadistic side, in fact, was present even during his time as a Gorgom captive in the 1970s, exemplified by his savage remarks about Yukari to Nobuhiko when both of them shared the same cell.
As brutal as he was, his devotion to the Creation King appeared to have never wavered over all the years. He still called out Darom for his submissiveness, blaming the High Priest for having let the government take their master from them in the first place. Upon finding out the true story behind the Creation King's existence, Bilgenia was appalled, disappointed that his master was not the revered god he had always thought it to be. This led him to ultimately turn back on Shinichi, handing Aoi the last piece of evidence to implicate the politician, even dying in battle to protect her from being killed by a hit squad.
