"Eiji... I'm no longer the hand that you need to reach out to."
―Ankh's last words to Eiji[src]

Ankh (アンク, Anku) is one of the five Greeed released in modern times, with he alone being reduced to a mere arm. To circumvent this, Ankh possessed the body of Shingo Izumi and assisted Eiji Hino in his crusade against the four other Greeed, though doing so purely for his own selfish motives.

Later, from various circumstances, Ankh betrayed Eiji and partnered with Kiyoto Maki, now desiring to transcend past being a Greeed. Slowly though, Ankh began to feel conflict within himself, leading to his return towards Eiji's side. After being attacked by Maki, his main Core Medal was split in half, but his consciousness otherwise remained intact. Ankh's medal was restored ten years later, but the arrival of Goda and the King's resurrection prompted Ankh to possess Eiji to become Kamen Rider OOO (仮面ライダーOOOオーズ, Kamen Raidā Ōzu) himself.

History

Origin

In The Kamen Rider OOO novel, when Ankh was first created, he resided within his 10 Core Medals not as the Greeed known as Ankh, but as the King of Birds. At that point Ankh felt free and was able to see the beauty in this world, he loved the vast blue sky more than anything. But as the 10th Core Medal was taken away, Ankh spawned from the Core Medals with his sense smell, vision and taste becoming distorted. He was unable to see the world in the same way he previously did and left with a feeling of being incomplete. He and the other Greeeds became the embodiment of greed. The King witnesses the birth of the Greeeds and says “Happy Birthday!” as he takes their Core Medals.

What sets Ankh apart and leads him to his betrayal to the other Greeeds begins when he meets a blind girl. This girl dreams of being able to a beautiful scenery accompanied with bluebirds. Ankh seems to be able to connect to the blind girl. They eventually become friends through their mutual desire to see the world in a beautiful perspective, even though Ankh hates humans. Ankh goes on to tell the girl that he’s actually a bird. The girl believes him and asks “Mr. Bird, what color are you?” Ankh responds with “I’m red…” leaving her rather disappointed as he’s not blue. Eventually Ankh tells her that he can help her see, and creates the Condor Yummy through her desire to see. The Condor Yummy attacks random people gouges their eyes out and gives them to the girl. She opens her eyes and sees corpses with their eyes gouged out, causing her to go insane. She no longer has the desire to see again, and the Condor Yummy disintegrates into Cell Medals. Shortly before she dies, the girl asks Ankh to once again become the King of Birds in order to protect the weak. Ankh feels bad for not being able to save her, in a similar way to Eiji and the girl he couldn’t save during the war.

Ankh joins up with the other Greeeds and agrees to take down the King together in order to retrieve their Core Medals. The King is insanely strong and controls a large portion of Europe. He uses the combos very efficiently, with Gatakiriba he clones himself and destroys neighboring countries and their armies. He uses Tajadol’s flight as his advantage and burns down villages that try and oppose him. With Latorartar’s speed, he infiltrates enemy camp and strikes quickly. He uses Sagohzo and Shauta to cause earthquakes and tsunamis to take down the Spanish Armada. The Greeeds manage to get their Core Medals back too, but even when they are in their full form they can’t take on the King. In order to defeat him, they resort to using Yummies created from the King’s greed. Uva, Kazari and Mezool creates the Cockroach, Lion and Whale Yummies, they are almost as strong as a full form Greeed because of the King’s strong greed. But none of this is enough as Ankh reveals that he was working with the King all along, but the King betrays Ankh. When the First OOO attempted to absorb the power of all the Core Medals, the King was turned into a stone coffin sealing the Greeed, including Ankh (who transformed into an arm) containing the Core Medal with his consciousness while the rest of his body was mummified and preserved in Europe. Right before Ankh is sealed, he imagines and sees the blind girl, flying together and looking down on the beautiful world.

OOO

In present times, he unseals himself and the other Greeed completely, while stealing some of the others' Core Medals in the process to get an advantage over them. However, he loses one of his Taka Medals when Eiji Hino takes it by accident. He originally intends to force Eiji to return his medal, but when the Kamakiri Yummy attacks when trying to retrieve other Core Medals he has stolen from his fellow Greeed, Eiji saves him. To return the favor, while intending to make Eiji a pawn in his scheme, Ankh saves the human by giving him some of the Core Medals he has and enabling him to transform into Kamen Rider OOO.

After the Yummy is destroyed, Ankh takes the body of the detective Shingo Izumi, who was mortally wounded in the attack, causing Shingo's hair to spike up with a dull blonde color. As Ankh explains, he intends to use Shingo's body as his temporary vessel, thus keeping Shingo barely alive, so he could move about unnoticed while feeding on as many Cell Medals as he can to regain his complete form. However, when Eiji proves far more strong willed than he thought, Ankh is forced into promising him to give Eiji the OOO Driver so he could save lives rather than just to gather Cell Medals for Ankh.

Eventually, Ankh reveals his reasons for wanting the Core Medals is so he can evolve into a stronger being. However, after reabsorbing his two Core Medals and only able to project a single rainbow-hued wing from his shoulder, Ankh's inability to regenerate attracts Eiji's concern. The mystery deepens when a being resembling Ankh's left forearm appears and creates two Oumu Yummy in an attempt to take his counterpart's Core Medals, eventually forced to regenerate into a near-complete being to support Kazari and Maki while attempting to absorb Ankh and become whole.

After his counterpart has been destroyed, Ankh retakes Shingo's body as his remaining Core Medals cannot maintain his new body. Having regained his full powers as a Greeed, taking back his Taka Medal from Eiji, Ankh offers to help Maki in gaining the Purple Core Medals in return of becoming the vessel for all the other Core Medals. Reviving Uva, Ankh then joins forces with the other Greeed and rallies them against Eiji. However, while he seemingly betrayed Eiji and the others, things eventually started to change. He even asks Hina to let him keep Shingo as his body after all he's experienced as a human being. Later on as Ankh goes to fight against Eiji, all the while talking with him about how he is disgusted by Eiji's lack of desire, Eiji finally realizes his desire to protect others by gaining strength. Eiji then thanks Ankh which causes a disturbance in Ankh. Just as things seem to change slightly for the better, Maki appears on a cliff, and adds another Purple Core to Eiji, making him unstable and forcing him to assume the purple-eyed Tatoba form. Ankh then fights against Eiji once more, but when Maki adds another Core, this forces him to fight seriously against Eiji, now as the Eiji Greeed, in his newly-regained complete form. He then told Eiji that he shouldn't go berserk if wants to achieve his desire while also defeating him. After the fight, Maki tells Ankh that he won't choose him to be the vessel for all the Core Medals, due to becoming too human, causing Ankh and him to fight with Maki damaging Ankh's Taka Medal which holds his conscious. Maki then takes Ankh's Medals by force, while leaving him with one set of Core Medals. However, the Taka Medal that contains his consciousness is severely cracked, but surprisingly had an epiphany and felt satisfied for the first time. Hina finds him but Ankh tells her not to mention about his shattered Core Medal to Eiji.

Ankh soon makes his way back to Eiji, (jokingly) asking for the year's worth of ice candy that they had as part of the deal. After Uva is turned by Maki into a Core Sarcophagus Uncontrollable, Ankh assumes his complete Greeed form and assists Eiji in fighting the horde of Kuzu Yummy. The two soon turn their attention to the Kyouryu Greeed, leaving the Kuzu Yummy to Birth and Birth·Proto Type. After a brief confrontation, Eiji attempts to finish off Maki with a massive Cell Medal-fueled slash from the Medagabryu. With this failing, Ankh gives him the Medals necessary for him to assume the Tajadol Combo, including the cracked Taka Medal containing his consciousness. Realizing Ankh is sacrificing himself, Eiji transforms.

As the battle continues, Ankh continues fighting with Eiji in spirit, lending his power to both a punch from the Tajaspiner, periodic shielding of Eiji from Maki's attacks, countering Maki's final fireball so that Eiji's final Giga Scan can hit home. As Maki dies and is sucked into the black hole formed on his chest, the Taka Medal housing Ankh's consciousness flies out of the OOO Driver and splits in half. As Eiji begins falling to earth, Ankh, in his forearm form, wakes him with a few slaps to the face, and tells Eiji he got what he wanted. Eiji asks protests, saying if he wanted life, then why is he letting himself die. He tells Eiji that thanks to him and the others "a pile of Medals like me can 'die'...I don't think I could ever find anything more satisfying", thus finding the thing he craved for so much, in death. Ankh also tells Eiji, as he begins to fly away, that he is no longer the hand Eiji should reach for. With that, Ankh fades away, leaving behind one half of his Taka Medal. The other half ended up with Hina, assuming the form of Ankh's possession of Shingo and smiling at her sweetly before dropping into the sand. Keeping both halves with him, Eiji vows to somehow restore his friend, traveling the world to find a way to do so, while unaware that a spectral Ankh arm is following him in these travels.

OOO 10th: Core Medal of Resurrection

10 years after defeating Doctor Maki, Ankh awakens to a dystopic 2021 where he is saved by Eiji Hino, who was actually possessed by a modern-day Greeed known as Goda. Unbeknownst to Ankh, Eiji was dead and actually possessed when Ankh was saved. After discovering his identity, Ankh is forced to allow Goda to fight as OOO, which allows them to defeat the King.

However, Goda's desire to fulfill Eiji's causes him to become his own Rider, who attacks Ankh and leaves him with nothing except his own arm. After Goda ejects Eiji, Ankh possesses Eiji and cries after hearing what Eiji did to bring him back. With Eiji's blessing, Ankh transforms into side their minds. Eiji is happy that Ankh was fully revived, which was Eiji’s dying wish. Asked to fight alongside Eiji, Ankh transforms into Kamen Rider OOO, Tajadol Combo Eternity and completely overwhelms Goda, destroying him. As the fight ends, Eiji pushes Ankh out back into Shingo’s body while collapses on the ground. As Eiji lays dying, he sees that the girl he saved from the King was still alive and passes away. Later that evening, Ankh mourns his friend’s death.

Ankh (With Eiji's Appearance)

Several years in the future, Ankh travels to the year 2011 through an unknown method, appearing before Eiji at an airport. Planning beforehand, Ankh assumes Eiji's appearance to trick the Poseidon Greeed, feigning death when attacked. Quietly watching Poseidon fight Akira and Shintaro, Ankh attacked the former when his guard was down, retrieving several Core Medals for Eiji to use.

Transforming into OOO, Eiji fights off Poseidon, with Ankh assisting him in the battle. Recognizing himself to be at a disadvantage, Poseidon retreats, to Ankh's annoyance. Per Eiji's request, Ankh then canceled his transformation, turning into Shingo's form.

Overjoyed to see Ankh, Hina hugs him, with Ankh acting awkwardly in response. Eiji smiles at this, with the others looking surprised at Ankh's presence. Returning to International Cuisine Restaurant Cous Coussier, Ankh is greeted by Chiyoko, being given several ice candies from her. Amidst their usual banter with each other, Ankh and his friends are attacked by a hoard of Yummies, forcing Eiji and Ankh to fight back.

Facing Poseidon once more, Eiji brushes off Ankh's warnings and encourages Poseidon's host to regain control, nearly dying from an attack. Exasperated, Ankh tells Eiji to not risk his life so carelessly, much less for a "complete stranger". Still adamant, Eiji replies that Poseidon's host is not a stranger, since he is a fellow Kamen Rider. To Ankh's surprise, Eiji's belief is proven right; Poseidon's host ultimately gaining the willpower to cancel his transformation.

The battle temporarily ended, Michal profusely apologizes to Eiji, Hina, and Ankh, telling his backstory to them. Once learning of Michal's aquaphobia, Ankh laughs at the irony, with Eiji and Hina rebuking his insensitive behavior. Forming a plan, Ankh and the others trick Poseidon into reappearing, giving Ankh the means to retrieve several more Core Medals.

Retaliating in response, Poseidon discards Michal and escapes, intent on traveling into a different timeline. The next morning, Ankh and Eiji prepare to face Poseidon one final time, facing a hoard of Yummies. Still curious, Eiji asks Ankh how he returned, with Ankh still refusing to answer. Eiji then asks if the fight with Poseidon will be their last. Ankh simply say that if he wants to know he'd better live, Eiji responding that Ankh should too. After Poseidon is defeated, Eiji knowingly asks Ankh if he'll be leaving too. Ankh simply smiles, vanishing when Eiji and Hina looked away.

Heisei Generations Final

―Ankh to Eiji in Heisei Generations Final[src]

Like his fellow Greeed, Ankh's Core Medals and body were remade by the Foundation X's Kaisei Mogami to attack the Riders. He was forced by Kaisei to battle an untransformed Eiji until he resonated with the broken Taka Medal in Eiji's possession. As Ankh's consciousness entered his makeshift body, he continued to help Eiji and the other Riders stop Mogami and the Enigma.

However, this revival was only temporary, as the fake Core Medals faded away. Ankh still lingered for a while to get his ice cream from Eiji, before turning back into the Medal pieces.

Ankh is a playable character in Kamen Rider Battle: Ganbarizing alongside with many other Kamen Riders.

Personality

Ankh is a dishonest wildcard. As a Greeed he has little regard for humans, seeing them solely for their flaws. Ankh also believes that he has the right to get whatever he wants and detests having to give something away if there's no benefit for him. He is also at odds with the other Greeed, being seen as a traitor by them. In general, Ankh focuses only on obtaining enough Medals to regain his complete body, having no qualms betraying others to accomplish his goals.

Since possessing a human body, Ankh has been able to experience real emotions and the full effect of the five senses, something an incomplete Greeed normally cannot do. The most prominent example of this effect is his ability to taste food, resulting in him developing a strong liking for popsicles. True to his bird nature, Ankh also shows a preference for high places, frequently resting somewhere high in his quarters shared with Eiji, and jumping out of the window when leaving. Ankh also dislikes eating poultry, though will do so if forced by Hina.

Evidently, Ankh's time spent in Shingo's body significantly changed his outlook on life, fueling Ankh's disgust at being a "mere" Greeed. Believing that he and his brethren were not truly alive as creatures, Ankh later decided to align with Maki's side, much to Hina's shock.

As time passed however, Ankh began feeling conflicted over his selfish actions, recognizing that he had genuinely become attached to Eiji and Hina. To his own shock, Ankh ultimately saved Eiji from Maki, causing the latter to abolish their shared partnership. Mortally wounded from Maki's attack, Ankh had his Core Medals taken, losing his chance to "evolve" as planned. Yet, for the first time in his life, Ankh felt a sense of satisfaction, being glad to have helped his friend.

Rejoining Eiji's group, Ankh assisted them in stopping Maki, sacrificing himself in the end. Appearing as a spirit, Ankh told Eiji that he had gained what he wanted, namely life itself.

Knowing the importance of gathering information, Ankh regularly carries a tablet or a smartphone for intel, giving him a significant edge against foes.

In the Net Movie, Ankh was knocked out and his personality was changed to a more polite demeanor, much to his friends' disturbance.

Forms

Ankh (Right Arm)

Ankh's arm

Ankh's appearance throughout the series, this was resulted after his right hand sealed by the King when accessing the power of all Core Medals. Due to this, Ankh needs to possess Shingo Izumi for the most of time. Though he can still separate from his host, but he must return back possessing Shingo otherwise the two would die. When separated, Ankh can fly as a method to travel. Right after his death in the final episode, Ankh was left as a spectral flying arm, tailing Eiji in his adventures until being revived.

Ankh (Complete)

Ankh in Completion

  • Height: 214 cm
  • Weight: 117 kg

This form was what he actually looked like before he was separated from his whole body. He was reunited with his old body but during his first reunion, the other part of his consciousness tried to take over until OOO Putotyra smashed three of his Medals, turning him into a pile of Cell Medals but revived as the original Ankh. While retain the ability to possess hosts, Ankh can initiate human disguises like other Greeeds, taking the form of Shingo Izumi in his possessed state and Eiji briefly, maintaining his Greeed right arm out of habit.

It is never explained how Ankh retained his complete Greeed form after Maki confiscated a set of his Core Medals, given how he had previously been unable to do so, even with Shingo as his host. Possibly though, this is due to Ankh's newfound sense of satisfaction, an emotion stated to be "impossible" for any Greeed to achieve.

  • Mind Reading: Ankh can read the thoughts of his host to search trough their inner desires and create a Yummy based on it.

  • Pyrokinesis: From his right arm, Ankh can channel a stream of flames.

―Transformation announcement[src]

Tajadol Combo Eternity (タジャドルコンボ エタニティ, Tajadoru Konbo Etaniti) is OOO's extra final form, the evolved version of the normal Tajadol Combo and his Greeed form.[2]

This form is armed with the Tajanityspinner that can fire flaming orbs of energy at its opponent. It is capable of reading the three Eternity Core Medals, which if used in conjunction with four of Ankh's Core Medals, allows for an Eternity Charge (エタニティチャージ, Etaniti Chāji), which consists of Ankh hurling a phoenix crossed-shaped fireball at the opponent.

This Combo's Scanning Charge finisher is a variation of the Prominence Drop (プロミネンスドロップ, Purominensu Doroppu), in which he jumps into the air and performs a flying kick, with energy peacock feathers sprouting from his back. As he passes through three red energy rings, he also manifests energy hawk wings and four mechanical condor talons. After the kick strikes the enemy, the talons crush them.

This form is exclusive to Kamen Rider OOO 10th: Core Medal of Resurrection.

  • Transformation: Ankh Arms: Happy Birth~day! (アンクアームズ・ハッピーバースデー!, Anku Āmuzu - Happī Bāsudē!)
    • Squash: Orange Ice (オレンジアイス, Orenji Aisu, lit. "Orange Popsicle")
    • Au Lait: Banana Ice (バナナアイス, Banana Aisu, lit. "Banana Popsicle")
    • Sparking: Budou Ice (ブドウアイス, Budō Aisu, lit. "Grape Popsicle")

Relationships

Friends

  • Eiji Hino/Kamen Rider OOO: After Eiji accidentally broke the seal, freeing the Undead, Ankh decided to use Eiji to collect more medals to revive himself. However, Eiji takes advantage of the deal to use the power of OOO for justice, as he feels reluctant in doing it. They weren't friends at the start, but throughout the entire show, their relationship started to grow into friendship. Eiji dyingly wished Ankh back during the war with the original OOO (and later Goda).
  • Hina Izumi: The sister of Ankh's body host Shingo, who watches Ankh to ensure nothing bad happens to her brother's body. Despite their problems with each other, Hina starts to worry for Ankh too.

Allies

  • Shingo Izumi: When Shingo was nearly killed in an accident by the Kamakiri Yummy, Ankh possesses him so that he'll be healed from near-death.
  • Shintaro Goto/Kamen Rider Birth (-X): to be added
  • Akira Date/Kamen Rider Birth: Ankh finds Akira odd when they first met. But was intrigued when finding him as a rider using Cell Medals. He tries to steal them all from him but fails everytime.
  • Erika Satonaka: to be added
  • Kousei Kougami: The head of the Kougami Foundation offers an alliance to him and Eiji in their battles against the Greeed. This ticks Ankh very much when it comes to giving up medals, but proves reliable when it comes to the Greeed and OOO.
  • Chiyoko Shirashi: The owner of Cous Coussier offers her restaurant as Ankh and Eiji's home. He finds her annoying after buying into Eiji's fake story of Ankh's origin.

Enemies

  • Greeed: Ankh's former comrades who he finds as his enemies.
  • Ancient OOO: The original OOO & king who Ankh once served as his vassal. He never imagined him coming back, once he was revived by Eiji's dying wish.
  • Goda: Ankh finds Core Medals inside Eiji, finding out an artificial Greeed possessed him. Goda revealing that Eiji's body is now a possessed dead corpse, Ankh wasn't happy about their alliance against the king, even though it was the only way. Goda then backstabs Ankh when taking all the king's Medals as his own. Eiji manages to save Ankh from Goda and they unite as Ankh becomes a new TaJaDol OOO against him.

Behind the Scenes

Portrayal

Ankh was voiced and portrayed by Ryosuke Miura (三浦 涼介, Miura Ryōsuke), who also played Shingo Izumi. In Movie War Mega Max, while assuming Eiji Hino's appearance, he was portrayed by Shu Watanabe (渡部 秀, Watanabe Shū).

His suit actors were Eitoku (永徳 as an arm), Natsumi Adachi (足立 夏海, Adachi Natsumi, opening dance), and Satoshi Fujita (藤田 慧, Fujita Satoshi, understudy)

In the Tagalog dub, Ankh was voiced by Jak Roberto.

Etymology

"Ankh" comes from the Hindi word for eye (आँख ā̃ṅkh), as in a hawk's eye, one of Ankh's motifs is a hawk and has an eye on his palm, Ankh in his complete Greeed form also has only one eye like Horus, the Egyptian god protector of Pharaohs. This is a reference to the blind girl which he met and his first selfless desire to get a pair of eyes for her to see the world with the help of Condor Yummy though she was traumatized due to Ankh's actions and died of insanity. Similarly, an ankh is a type of Egyptian item that is also a character that reads "Eternal Life". His name was originally planned to be "Ash" (アッシュ, Asshu) from the Japanese word assuru (圧する), meaning "to oppress" or "to dominate", which would fit well into his personality and the Bird Yummy stealing attributes from people after restraining them.

Concept Art

Ankh concept art

Ankh concept art was designed by Yutaka Izubuchi (出渕 裕, Izubuchi Yutaka).

Notes

  • Ankh's name is also variably written as "Unkh" in media released by TV Asahi, Toei Company, and Bandai, which is an example of a common romanization error from the Japanese language.
  • Hitomi Isaka, the Kamen Rider OOO representative for the idol group Kamen Rider Girls, named her pet dog after Ankh.
  • His Tajadol Eternity Combo repaints the Tajadol suit with the helmet also retooled to resemble his Greeed form.
