Plot[]
The show opens with a young man in some unknown factory, fleeing from strange alien security guards chasing after and shooting their guns at him. The youth runs through the halls until he reaches a door and enters a room full of stairs and floating doors, only to have another security guard shooting at him from below on the bottom side of the floor he was standing on.
The youth continues to run from the guard and just barely dodges a bullet aimed at his chest, he then trips and lands on a floating blue door, which activates and sends him falling through. He ends up in the air on a moonlit night and falls past an airplane, seeing the city skyline of Tokyo as he continues his descent. He is amazed and says that this is the world that his mother came from, but then passes out from the G-forces of his rapid fall.
The next morning, he washes up on shore, having landed in the Pacific Ocean the night before and drifted onto the beach. A young boy, Hajime, discovers him and pokes him with a stick to see if he found a dead body and wonders if he should report it to the police or call an ambulance, only to hear the youth’s stomach growling and him asking if Hajime has any food to eat.
The youth is in wonderment at the sight of Earth and follows Hajime, who previously insisted that the youth stay at the beach while he went to fetch him something. But the youth’s curiosity and impatience got the better of him, saying he is too excited to wait, but this makes Hajime uncomfortable as it makes his companion look like a stalker and tells him to cut it out. The youth asks if what Hajime is carrying in the plastic bag is food but Hajime says that it isn’t, they are seashells that he collected for his mother.
Hearing the mention of Hajime’s mother makes the youth think of his own mother, which he feels sad about for some reason. Suddenly, a van speeds towards Hajime, unaware of the crosswalk sign signaling that he had the right of way. The youth rushes towards Hajime and stops the van by shielding him and taking the impact, which shows that he has superhuman strength and durability as the van’s front end gets crushed and the driver and his companion are sent comically flying through the windshield. The youth then quickly grabs the two as they start to go flying and sets them gently on the ground before they can be seriously injured, though he is dismayed that he damaged the van as he thought the vehicle would be more durable than it was and immediately apologized to the driver, who is too dazed to respond. Hajime is more shocked at what the youth can do as his new friend tries to resuscitate the driver by comically shaking him.
Elsewhere, a reporter named Hanto asks questions to a suburban housewife named Keiko Shirabe about her missing husband and if she witnessed anything like the crayon drawing of a monster he shows her half a year ago before her husband disappeared. Feeling insulted and upset, Keiko says she has no time for Hanto’s stupidity and walks off in a huff. Hanto’s mentor shows up and says that his method of interviewing Keiko lacked tact and monsters are just fiction to most ordinary people. Hanto apologizes for his bad habits and his mentor believes that Keiko is actually a murderer, based on how she reacted to being questioned. He orders Hanto to get the scoop on this unsolved case, so Hanto moves out to tail Keiko and investigate.
In another part of the city, a creepy man with glasses gives an Agent some tongue-like things on a key ring with human faces on top. The agent gives the man his payment of a black cube, which he is not happy with and wants more than what he received for his work. But the Agent is gone and doesn’t hear his complaints and the man has a drug-like addiction to the strange cube, realizing he will have to work harder to get more.
Hajime opens up the shutter to his secret base and gives the youth his stash of snacks as a token of gratitude for saving his life. The youth eats a packet of Poppin Gummies and is elated by how they taste, savoring each flavor as Hajime explains that the gummies are orange and grape flavors. The youth then tries a lollipop and enjoys its taste as well saying that he loves “human snacks”, only to have a strange reaction to them as his stomach starts hurting and a strange little creature comes out of his body as well as a strange thing on his waist where his bellybutton should be.
The thing begins moving and more little creatures pop out of his belly, which freaks Hajime out and asks the youth what they are. He believes that they are his minions, which Hajime questions what he means by that, to which the youth speculates that they are fragments of himself that are here to help him. He thinks that he can use them somehow and assumes he can create more by eating more snacks. Before the youth can eat more of the lollipop, Hajime asks if he is not human, which the youth is surprised he figured out but Hajime says it is obvious by his superhuman powers and the weird mouth thing on his stomach. The youth timidly confirms that he is an alien and all of his race have a second mouth on their stomachs called a Gavv. This scares Hajime who asks if he is going to eat humans, which the boy emphasizes he personally does not have any desire to eat humans. (Implying that other members of his species might have no qualms about such a thing.)
Before they can continue the conversation, Hajime’s father calls him to come back home because his mother is home now and breakfast is ready. Hajime apologizes for running late and hangs up, explaining to his alien friend that his mother was working overseas for a while and she just got back to Japan. He apologizes for holding Hajime up and insists that he goes to see his mother, with Hajime offering his secret base as a place to stay for the alien and promises to bring a meal to him later. He also cautions him to conceal his identity as an alien if he goes out, as not all humans are as trusting as he is and the boy already acts a bit weird to possibly arouse suspicion.
Hajime heads home and runs past the creepy man, who selects him as a target and ingests the black gelatinous cube, growing a mouth with razor sharp teeth from his stomach and a toad-like tongue, grimacing at the thought of pursuing the young boy.
As he waits for Hajime, the youth, revealed to be named Shoma, remembers his mother telling him never to eat the snacks of their planet when he was little. When he asked why, she simply said that he just can’t. Shoma accepts that he will probably be living on Earth in Hajime’s base from now on since he can’t go back home. But he suddenly senses that something is wrong...
Meanwhile, the creepy man stops Hajime from getting home, saying that the boy seems to be enjoying life. Hajime at first ignores him because of stranger danger and goes the other way to a cargo shipyard, but he is followed by the man who says that happiness is truly delicious and it will make an even tastier “Dark Confection” as he opens his second month and prepares to eat Hajime, only for Shoma to arrive at super speed and push him out of the way. He gives Hajime the red coat that he left for him, concerned he might catch a cold in the sea breeze.
The man is upset that his meal was ruined, telling Shoma that if he doesn’t want to end up at the “snack factory” then he should stay out of the way. He removes a technorganic USB device from his second mouth and suddenly transforms, becoming a canine monster with horns on its head. Shoma gives Hajime his seashells, saying he forgot to take them with him on his way home, as it is important that Hajime gives them to his mother.
The Granute Hound is perturbed about being ignored and wonders why Shoma isn’t cowering at the sight of him, to which he responds that he is also a Granute despite his appearance, showing him his Gavv. Hound wonders why Shoma’s Gavv is red and different from his, but the latter isn’t interested in answering and says that Hound will not harm Hajime. Shoma tries to fight Hound but he proves to be much stronger than him, watching the devilish dog head move towards Hajime, which triggers a PTSD panic attack as he hyperventilates and his hands shake. Shoma remembers how his mother died, eaten by a Granute with him unable to help her as he was restrained and forced to watch.
Hearing the maniacal laughter of Hound snaps him out of it as he tries to save Hajime, starting to cry as he wonders why he is still so weak as more terrible flashbacks to the death of his mother flicker in his mind while getting beat down. He vows to not be weak anymore starting today and he hits Hound with a hard punch, only to get punched back and slammed into a shipping crate. Shoma’s fragments appear to tell him to “Eat Gummy”, and make an image of his Gavv to show what needs to be done to win. Shoma “eats” a Poppin Gummy with his Gavv, becoming a gummy armored warrior and understanding now what those minions can do for him.
As he fights Hound, Shoma discovers his armor is shock absorbent as his opponent’s punches literally bounce off him, however the armor is not resistant to Hound’s claws as his chest armor gets damaged and peels away, but the armor can regenerate upon eating another Gochizo and Shoma gets stronger after consuming another.
Hajime’s mother is out looking for her son, only to find Hound and Shoma in combat and panics upon seeing the two “monsters” and tries to grab Hajime and run. Hound tries to strike at them with an energy slash, but Shoma shields the both of them and takes more damage. Hajime’s mother will not listen to her son as she drags him away when he tries to explain that Shoma is his friend. Hound mocks Shoma’s efforts to save her since she only sees him as a monster, but he accepts that he is a monster like him and keeps fighting regardless, releasing a blade weapon from inside his Gavv. Shoma then uses his surroundings to his advantage to fight Hound, going inbetween shipping containers to get Hound into a cramped space to keep his mobility down. After giving Hound a good thrashing, he tries using his sword to no success as the Gochizo he launched did no damage. Hound throws a shipping container, which Shoma slashes in half and goes inside the right half, coming out and striking Hound with a sword beam.
Hound then tries to flee by changing into a full canine form, but a little Gochizo called Vrocan offers its assistance by summoning a large hard candy themed ATV to pursue Hound. During their chase across the city, they race past Hanto who hears bystanders in the chaos call them “monsters”. The pursuit concludes with Shoma ramming Hound from a building and then using an enhanced kick to send him flying into an amusement park. Hound is perplexed by his attacker, as there is no Granute like the one in front of him.
Kicking Gummy offers to help, which Shoma holds off on as he asks Hound to either go peacefully and give up Dark Confections or he will destroy him right here and now. The addict Hound refuses to give up the evil candy and threatens to smash Shoma instead, forcing Shoma to use Kicking Gummy to pulverize Hound and finish him off with a Rider Kick. As the dust settles, Shoma realizes that he finally was able to protect someone.
Later on the news, a reporter informs the public of mysterious explosions happening in the Nagihama district of Tokyo earlier at 11:30 AM. Hajime returns to the base, only to find a note from Shoma saying thanks for his hospitality but after seeing how scared his mother was of him he has decided not to trouble Hajime anymore and took the snacks he had with him. Shoma apologizes for scaring his mother and decides to take Hajime’s advice about hiding his true identity as an alien.
As he wanders around, Shoma sees a human zoom past him on a motorcycle. He realizes he needs regular transportation if he is to blend into humanity, asking Vrocan if it can turn into a regular motorcycle, to which it seems to say it can, turning into a dual sport bike. Shoma heads off to wherever the path takes him, while Hajime cries a bit and calls Shoma an idiot for leaving evidence by writing a note, tearing it up.
One week later, a blonde gyaru finds Shoma lying unconscious in the bushes of a public park and tries to wake him up…
