Plot[]
A young man, Shoma, flees from armed guards named Agents in a factory. He reaches a door and opens it, leading to a space full of floating doors and stairs. Upon being ambushed by more Agents, Shoma attempts to run away but falls off of one of the stairways in the process of dodging a bullet. He lands on one of the floating doors, which opens under him. Upon passing through, he emerges from the door of an airliner in flight. Seeing the skyline of Tokyo at night as he falls through the sky, Shoma recognizes the world as his mother's before losing consciousness.
The next morning, a young boy named Hajime discovers Shoma, who has washed ashore on a beach. Hajime wonders if he is dead and pokes him with a stick, only to hear his stomach growling. Upon awakening, Shoma asks Hajime if he has anything to eat.
While following Hajime, Shoma is amazed by Earth and how different it is from his world. Hajime scorns Shoma for following him, as he had been told to wait at the beach until Hajime brings food back. Shoma asks if Hajime has food in the plastic bag he's carrying, but he says it contains seashells he collected for his mother. This causes Shoma think of his own mother and become melancholic. Hajime crosses the street but does not see a van speeding towards him. Shoma rushes towards Hajime and shields him with his body. The van immediately halts upon striking him, crushing the front of the vehicle and causing the driver and passenger to fly through the window. Unharmed, Shoma grabs the two from the air and sets them on the ground. He is surprised by the state of the van, which he expected to be more durable. Shoma apologizes to the occupants, who are comically frozen in shock, and repeatedly asks them if they're okay while shaking the driver.
Elsewhere, a freelance writer named Hanto Karakida approaches a woman named Keiko Shirabe as she takes out her garbage. He holds up a crayon drawing of a monster and asks her if she saw anything like it when her husband disappeared half a year ago. Upset and feeling insulted, she heads back into her home. Hanto’s mentor, Soji Shioya, reprimands him for his lack of tact and reminds him that monsters are just fiction to most people. However, Soji comes to the conclusion that Keiko actually murdered her husband based on her facial expressions and tells Hanto to investigate.
In a secluded location, Granute Hound presents several Human Presses to an Agent, which gives him a single Dark Snack as payment. The Granute complains that he hasn't been given more, but the Agent has already disappeared when he looks back up.
Hajime brings Shoma inside a shed, which he refers to his secret base. He gives Shoma an assortment of snacks as thanks for saving his life and says he will bring real food later. Shoma eats a gummy and is elated by how tasty they are. He tries a second one and remarks that it tastes different, leading Hajime to explain that the bag contains orange and grape flavors. Shoma then sucks a lollipop before suddenly complaining that his stomach hurts. Numerous Gochizo are ejected from a mouth-like object on Shoma's abdomen as a shocked Hajime asks what they are. Shoma identifies them as his "kin", fragments of himself that will aid him, and concludes that he is able to create them by eating human snacks. Shoma informs Hajime that his race have a second mouth on their stomach called a Gavv. When Hajime asks if they eat humans, Shoma protests that he doesn't, implying that other members of his species do. Hajime receives a call from his father, who asks where he is and tells him hat his mother is home. Before leaving, he says that Shoma can stay at his secret base and he will return with food later. Hajime also advises him to conceal his alien nature. As he leaves, Hajime walks by Hound, who takes note of the boy and eats his Dark Snack with his Gavv.
As he waits for Hajime, Shoma remembers his mother telling him to never eat their snacks. Hound steps in front of Hajime as he runs home and remarks that the boy seems to be enjoying life. Hajime attempts to walk away, but the man follows him into a shipyard. Hound says that happiness makes for tastier Dark Snacks and reveals his Gavv, the tongue of which extends toward Hajime. However, Shoma runs to the shipyard at high speed and moves Hajime away. Hound tells Shoma to stay out of his way and removes a device from his Gavv, transforming into his monster form. He is confused why Shoma isn't scared before the latter reveals that he is also a Granute and shows his own Gavv. He kicks Hound, but the attack has no effect, and he is launched away into a stack of palettes by the monster's punch. Shoma trembles as he remembers his mother being turned into Human Press, but regains his composure and continues to attack, getting up every time he is knocked down. He eventually succeeds in delivering a punch that pushes Hound back, but is knocked away once again. All of the Gochizo approach Shoma as he lays on the ground, with a Poppingummy Gochizo pleading for him to eat it. When he is about to put it in his mouth, it begins crying and the other Gochizo form an image of his Gavv. Shoma uses Poppin Gummy with his Gavv, transforming into Poppingummy Form.
In the ensuing fight with Gavv, Hound punches Shoma, but the attack simply bounces off. He instead swipes with his claws, destroying pieces of Shoma's armor and necessitating that the latter use multiple Punchingummy Gochizos throughout the battle in order to repair it. Hajime’s mother arrives and exclaims that there are two monsters before running over to Hajime. Hound launches an energy slash at them, but Shoma blocks it with his body. She runs away with Hajime, who tries to speak up for Shoma. Hound mocks Shoma’s by pointing out that he was called a monster too. Shoma acknowledges that they're both monsters and ejects the Gavvgablade from his Gavv. After using the sword to slash Hound, Shoma launches a Poppingummy Gochizo on the Gochizpeeder. Threatened, Hound begins to run away, but it harmlessly bounces off of him. Hound throws a shipping container at Shoma, but the latter slashes in half and counterattacks by launching an energy slash. Hound transforms into a quadrupedal form and flees, but a Vrocan Gochizo approaches Shoma and asks to be eaten. Using it in the Gavv summons the Vrocanbuggy, allowing him to pursue Hound. The two fight as Shoma chases Hound across the city. This is witnessed by numerous bystanders, and the commotion is heard by Hanto. The pursuit concludes with Shoma knocking Hound off of a skyscraper, causing him to revert to his original form. Shoma tells Hound that he can either give up Dark Snacks or be defeated. Hound refuses and attacks, causing Shoma to use the Kickingummy Gochizo and destroy the Granute with the Kickingummy Kick.
Hajime returns to his secret base with food, only to find a note from Shoma. In the note, Shoma thanks Hajime for saving him with and says that he took a bunch of the snacks. He also apologizes for scaring his mom and says that he will keep his identity a secret. Hajime cries as he finishes reading the note. Elsewhere, Shoma sees someone drive past on a motorcycle while sucking on a lollipop. He uses the resulting Vrocan Gochizo to create a bike of his own and drives away.
One week later, Sachika Amane finds Shoma lying unconscious in a public park and tries to wake him up.
