AKB48 is an all-Japanese theater/idol group produced by Yasushi Akimoto. Unlike other idol groups in Japan, AKB48 is theater-based and have their own theater in Akihabara (a district in Tokyo) where they perform once every weekday, and more than once on both Saturday and Sunday. The theater is set up on the 8th floor of Don Quijote. Some of the title songs released as a single have been made a tie-in song for a television show or a television advertisement. The name derives from a shortened, Romanized representation of 'Akihabara'. AKB48 currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the "Pop group with the most amount of members".

AKB48 is divided into three teams: Team A, Team K and Team B. The number on each team varies over time and had reached a total of 169 members (including 3 of their sister groups: SKE48, NMB48 and HKT48; not including Research Students) as of January 2013.

Four of their members have appeared in Kamen Rider W. Tomomi Kasai and Tomomi Itano play Queen & Elizabeth which is also a sub-unit of the group. Reina Fujie played Eriko Aida in Kamen Rider W's Hyper Battle DVD. Narumi Kuranoo, made a cameo appearance in Kamen Rider Ex-Aid: True Ending. Other members have appeared in various Tokusatsu shows and films as well.

SKE48 and NGT48, sister groups of AKB48, also have members appear in the series. Former SKE48 member Rena Matsui will play Ryoka Saiga in the upcoming Kamen Rider Build: The Movie, while NGT48 members Riko Sugahara and Anju Satō made a guest appearance in Kamen Rider Ex-Aid's 36th episode as Kamen Rider Chronicle customers.

Before being a member of SDN48 (one of AKB48's former sister groups) Yui Takahashi made a guest appearance in Kamen Rider Ryuki's 44th episode as Mitsuru Sano's fiancée.
